The data used in this research are lyrics from the songs ABC 5 and The Hard Way. The research findings obtained: one analytic sentence in ABC, one paradoxical sentence in The Hard Way and twenty two synthetic sentences in both lyrics. The data indicate that there are more synthetic sentences rather than analytical and paradoxical sentences in the songs. In conclusion, the synthetic sentences used on the song lyrics are more fabricated for the virtue of meanings on the song lyrics than analytic and paradoxical sentences. Therefore, the listeners can express their emotions freely by song lyrics using synthetic sentences.

The method used in this study is library research. The collected data were qualitatively analyzed using Pedersen’s translation strategy, particularly for culture-specific items. The study found out that there were 51 food-related culture-specific items in the source language (SL) with their translations, and there were five translation strategies employed by the translator in rendering these items, namely retention, specification, direct translation, generalization, and substitution. Retention was the most frequently used strategy as it resembled 35 times in the data. The most common factor identified was the non-existence of the source language foodstuff terms in the target language as it existed 21 times out of 51 data. Abstract

This article addresses the political gait of the Arabs in Pre-Independence Indonesia. Using a qualitative method with a historical approach, this article aims to parse the political role of Arabs in Indonesia, the achievements they have, and the challenges they have faced since they first came to Indonesia until the country became independent in 1945. This study identifies several things. First, the involvement of Arabs in Indonesian politics has been going on since the time of the kingdom or empire. Some Sayyids are believed to occupy important positions, such as advisors to the king, foreign diplomats, and ministers. Second, in modern times, primarily until 1945, Arabs, both individually and in groups, have played an essential role in the constellation of Indonesian politics. In addition to establishing and developing PAI (called the Indonesian Arab Association initially but changed to the Indonesian Arab Party) in 1934, its figures, especially A.R. Baswedan and Hamid Algadri, were among the prominent figures during the Indonesian independence process. Third, there was a change in tendency in which the Arabs no longer struggled with aspects of the trade, as their initial motivation to emigrate to the archipelago, but began to be involved in various spheres of Indonesian people's lives, including in state politics. They have become essential figures of Indonesian society. With the political role played, they gain a stronger identity, increasingly 'becoming Indonesia'.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to explore the emotional state of the main character, Amelia, in The Babadook film. The film portrays how Amelia deals with her loss and how the monster Babadook represents the repressed feeling of loss. This research analyses the emergence of the Babadook, how it affects her, and how her behaviors are considered as melancholia by using qualitative method and the theory of psychoanalysis, Mourning and Melancholia by Sigmund Freud (1917). The research finds that the eerie monster haunts Amelia whenever she is confronted to her repressed emotion: grief and self- loathing. The Babadook monster is the manifestation of grief and loss. As the monster getting stronger, the sinister presence of the Babadook starts to affect Amelia’s psyche as she is getting more paranoid and more aggressive. She is also unable to show affection toward her son. Moreover, Amelia shows an act of self-destruct by keeping herself from the outside world and unconsciously blaming herself for the death of the husband. Those behaviors indicate that Amelia comes into the state of melancholia. Finally, she manages to overcome the state by accepting the feeling of loss and let herself mourn. The study of this film suggests a way of dealing with trauma and loss by accepting their permanent presence in life.

Abstract

This study aims to discuss the meaning of Repen Ripangi as a literary narrative manuscript of Adipati Panji Suryakusuma, Regent of Semarang which was then composed in the form of macapat song by Panji Jayasubrata. By placing it in the context of social and political history in Java in the nineteenth century, the text reveals the tension between the two social elites during the colonial period in a form of narrative poetry. This research used qualitative method with representation theory. The results show that the writing of Repen Ripangi in the form of narrative poetry was not merely an aesthetic expression of the author Javanese priayi, but also a means of representation which goal is the stigmatization of Kiai Ahmad Arrifai as a kiai who brings apprehension in society. In addition, another goal of the representation in Repen Ripangi was to strengthen of the penghulu as one of religious authorities in Java during the colonial period and the defense of priyai interests and their political patrons, namely the colonial government in Java.

Abstract

The study analyzes the dynamics of political participation of the largest Muslim ethnolinguistic group in the Philippines – the Meranao. Using Milbrath’s hierarchy of political involvement, the researcher examines the nature of Meranaos’ political processes and the role played by demographic and socioeconomic factors including gender, place of origin, age, income, education, and occupation on the nature of their political participation. The study adopted quantitative approach whereby survey method is the primary technique during the collection of data. There were 315 respondents who took part in the five-month survey period in the two districts of the province of Lanao del Sur in Southern Philippines. The research question is summed up on how do Meranaos participate in Philippine politics vis-a-vis Milbrath’s Hierarchy of Political Involvement, and how do social stratification in the Meranao society influence their political participation. The study found that the nature of Meranaos’ political participation is not up to democratic setup as they are confined only to spectatorial level, while rarely participating in transitional and gladiatorial levels. In the same manner, there were no significant impacts of demographic and socioeconomic factors on political participation. The effects were only found in individual formative items at a lesser extent. The study recommends the massive information drive on the status and significant roles of political institutions in the Meranao society in order to entice higher political participation. Extension of this study to other Muslim ethnolinguistic groups and communities in the Philippines is essential.
