Abstract

This research aims to investigate forms of propaganda spread by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) as represented in an Arabic History Coursebook they prepare for ISIS’ school environments. It utilizes Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) as its research method to examine and reveal values and ideologies behind choices of words, grammar, and text structures. Using an ISIS’ Arabic History Coursebook entitled Al-Tarikh: li al-Shaff al-Khamis al-Ibtida'i (published in 2016/1437H) as the data source, this research is primarily focused on the analysis of clauses and phrases which contain words of daulah and qital. The data were analysed utilizing functional linguistics and propaganda techniques as its analytical framework. Results of analyses show that as an organization ISIS fights for ideologies which underlie the idea of the Islamic State and spreads values of radicalism to its targeted communities. Propaganda techniques such as name calling, glittering generality, transfer, plain folk and bandwagon are found to be dominant in ISIS’ propaganda projects.

Abstract

In Islam, the fabricated hadith is the least acknowledged hadith. The scholars unanimously reject this hadith and forbid its recitation without identifying its status. Fabricated hadith’s core perversion is its justification for the Prophet Muhammad’s assassination (PBUH). Falsification of hadith has harmed numerous facets of life, including faith, religious legislation, and acts of devotion. Additionally, the number of false hadiths is growing daily. This chilling reality has become a concern due to the widespread dissemination of such hadiths through modern technology. The dissemination of falsified hadiths via social media has emerged as a new issue that new-generation Muslims must take seriously, particularly individual awareness, knowledge, ethics, and morals. This paper will emphasize the hadith’s history and falsification aspects, assess its dispersion tendencies using more advanced media, and recommend many tips for preventing further dissemination. Using a qualitative method, this study found several guidelines to ensure the dispersion of fabricated hadith is handled properly, such as not believing in anything quickly, ensuring authenticity before sharing, and providing advice to admit mistakes in spreading the fabricated hadith. In this regard, we encourage academic scholars to conduct research on fabricated hadiths in order to preserve the purity and authority of the Prophet’s hadiths as the second Islamic source for Muslims.

The research used a qualitative method by utilizing the gender studies approach. Specifically, it used gender-based violence and domestic violence concept by Ganley. The result of the research shows that the two main female characters had to face three forms of domestic violence such as physical violence, psychological violence, and sexual violence; and the two female characters fight against Rasheed’s behavior and they finally get different freedoms, both physically and psychologically. In conclusion, the two female characters in the novel tried to challenge the practice of domestic violence instead of silently confronting it like women are expected to do.

Abstract

This article aims to reveal the purification or modernization performed by Muhammadiyah in Sufism, especially concerning the practical mysticism in sufi order and philosophical mysticism on the concepts of ittihād, hulūl, and wahdat al wujūd. The research data is gathered from the official document Muhammadiyah records, such as fatwas of Muhammadiyah's Majlis Tarjih and Tajdid, Hamka's thoughts and AR Fakhruddin’s performance as former leaders of Muhammadiyah. This study uses content analysis to determine the position of Muhammadiyah's views on the early Sufi. The result showed that tajdīd performed by Muhammadiyah is called purification and it harmonious with modern life. It differs with the meaning and practices of early Sufism.  Muhammadiyah's position towards tarīqa is positive as long as the understanding and practice of Islam are derived from the guidance of the Qur'an and valid Sunnah. As for the concepts of ittihād, hulūl and wahdat al-wujūd, Muhammadiyah rejects them because there is an element of equating God with humans or pantheism, which has no basis in the Qur'an and Sunnah. This rejection is in line with what has been done by early Sufism scholars such as al-Sarrāj, al-Juwairī, al-Syahrastānī, and al-Kalabāżī.
