Abstract

Immersion of glass ionomer cement (GIC) type II in acid drink like isotonic drink could reduce its compressive strength. This is due to the matrix degradation process of GIC in acid condition. However, there is artificial saliva that canneutralize this condition. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of artificial saliva on compressive strengthof glass ionomer cement type II immersed in isotonic drink. The GICspecimens of 6 x 6 x 12 mm3beam were immersed for24 hours in distilled water, 24 hours in isotonic drink, 24 hours in isotonic drink continued with 72 hours in artificial saliva,48 hours in isotonic drink, and 48 hours in isotonic drink continued with 144 hours in artificial saliva. The compressivestrength was measured using Universal Testing Machine with a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. Statistical analysis wasperformed by one-way ANOVA and post-hoc LSD test (=0.05) showed a significant difference of compressive strength(p<0,05). It was concluded that artificial saliva increases the compressive strength of GIC immersed in isotonic drink.

Abstract

Dentures painful and uncomfortable at alveolar ridge denture support of oral mucosa is the most common symptomof denture wearers. The aim of this article is to provide guidelines for optimal using of the media and to identifyalternative uses that could be considered in daily practice. Soreness of oral mucosa under a denture, like all pain iscomplex uncomfort experience, in which multitude of factors interact from the emotional to the physical. Unevenpressure on tissue support under a denture base is probably initially caused irritate to denture bearing tissue, contribute to causing inflamation and increased sensitivity. It should be possible to identify which of the majoretiological agent is causing the pain and rapidly treatment.

Abstract

Oral candidiasis is one of clinical manifestations in aquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients. This conditionis a common opportunistic infection of the oral cavity caused by an overgrowth of Candida spesies. The clinical types oforal candidiasis are erythematous or atropic, pseudomembranous, hyperplastic or chronic, and angular cheilitis. AIDS isgroup of symptoms that resulting from infection of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). This case is associated with thedecreasing of CD4 count. The aimof this study was to know the types of oral candidiasis on AIDS patients at Dr WahidinSudirohusodo Hospital. This observational studywith a cross-sectional design examined 30 patients with AIDS whosuffered fromoral candidiasis, to determine its type after the diagnosis had confirmed by culture test. Their CD4 cellcount taken fromtheir medical records. The result showed that Pseudomembranous candidiasis were found to be higher(76.7%), that was followed by angular cheilitis (23.3%), hyperplastic (16.7%), and erythematous (6.7%). They wereshowed showed CD4 T cell count <200 cells/mm3 (63.3%). From this study, it was concluded that pseudomembranous candidiasis is the most common type and showed that CD4 T cell count <200cells/mmfrom the AIDS patients.

Abstract

Impaction is a condition of a tooth to be unsuccessful to erupt due to lack of space in the dental arch. Maxillary andmandibular third molars, and maxillary canine teeth often impact. The purpose of this study was to obtain anoverview information about distribution and the use of panoramic and periapical radiology technique onexamination of mandibular third molar. Samples were obtained by consecutive sampling technique. The study wasconducted on a number of 421 visitors of Radiology Clinic of the hospitals which this research done in March andApril, 2012. The results showed the periapical technique percentage 25.7% on March, and 31.7% on April; average28.7%. Panoramic technique was 74.3% on March, and 68.3% on April; average 71.3%. From those results, it wasconcluded that compared to periapical techniques, panoramic technique was predominantly used by the dentist toanalyze the mandibular third molar impaction

Abstract

Prosthodontic treatment aims to restore the chewing function (rehabilitation) and to prevent tooth decay and bone resorption (preventive and conservative). As an example, treatment by overdenture and Richmond crown. Overdenture is a partial or complete removable denture covered and supported by one or more teeth, the tooth roots and/or dental implants. Richmond crown is fixed denture by post and crown system, in which the post part goes into the root canal and its crown covers the entire of original tooth crown surface. By retaining the original teeth and/or roots, it could improve the stability and retention of the denture, and defend proprioseptic of teeth and vertical dimensions. To provide information about preventive prosthodontic treatment and prevention by using overdenture and Richmond crown. Case Report: A 50 year old woman only has 44 teeth on the mandible which is indicated for the overdenture construction and loss teeth 13, 14, 17 and 27 on the maxilla with deep caries in teeth 22 which is indicated for a removable partial denture (RPDs) construction by Richmond crown gear 22. On an early stage study, printing models is done. Then treatment of the root canal on teeth 22 and 44, followed by root canal preparation, core construction (cast post) and Richmond crown on tooth 22 and bareroot preparation on tooth 44 for overdenture construction. The procedure followed by printing, recording bite to insertion. Choosing treatment either overdenture or Richmond crown is very important because it could mantain remain original teeth, thus it can help to improve the retention and stabilization.

Abstract

Objective: Periodontal therapy success is dependent on proper diagnosis and removal of sub gingival tooth–borne deposits such as acquired pellicle, calculus. and bacterial plaque biofilm besides, proper case selection and patient cooperation. From clinical perspective, enhanced visualization during the diagnostic and therapeutic periods has been given away to produce better results when matched to old-style approaches. Minimally invasive periodontal therapy  appraises the benefits of using minimal invasive techniques, the knowledge available for improving visualization during therapy. This review reports the benefits and drawbacks of minimally invasive periodontal surgery and validation for current approach. Methods: Keywords such as minimally invasive periodontal surgery, periodontal surgery, and regeneration was used to search in Google and PubMed. Full text articles in English that were published from 1995 to 2016 are presented. Only case and control studies and randomized clinical trials were included in this review. Results: Abstracts and articles published in other languages were not included in the review. This review makes available an evidence–based assessment of the knowledge and procedures. Conclusion: Minimally invasive periodontal surgery might be considered a true reality in the field of periodontal regeneration. Clinical improvements seen were consistently associated with very limited morbidity.
