Abstract

The purposes of this study are to find out the score of students’ vocabulary mastery and writing descriptive text ability and also the correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and writing descriptive text ability among the seventh grade students in SMP N 3 Bantul Yogyakarta academic year 2016/2017.This study used descriptive and correlational analysis. The data collection technique used were two tests, multiple choices test to find out the students’ score of vocabulary mastery and essay test to find out the score of students’ ability in writing descriptive text and to find out the correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and writing descriptive text ability among the seventh grade students in SMP N 3 Bantul Yogyakarta in the academic year 2016/2017.The result of this study showed that students’ mean in vocabulary mastery was 67.12 greater than the ideal mean 53.5. The mean of students’ writing ability was 63.79 close to the ideal mean 70. Based on the result, it is shown that there is a positive and significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and writing descriptive text ability. It means that vocabulary mastery influences writing ability.

Abstract

The Ron Clark Story movie belongs to the American TV movie that is very interesting to watch. It tells about an energetic, creative, and idealistic young teacher who is able to encourage his students to reach their full potential learning. As a future teacher, the researcher was interested to do this qualitative research in order to find out the themes of the story, the educational values and the educational values related to Sistem Among that are drawn from the movie. The researcher used document review and literary study as the data collection techniques. Meanwhile, qualitative analysis was used as the data analysis technique. The result of this study showed that the themes of the story were social and personal themes. The educational values were hard work, love, positive attitudes, and gratitude. Finally, the educational values related to Sistem Among were drawn through the familial relationship, individual freedom, and natural law.

Abstract

English is the world language. There are four skills in English such as listening, reading, speaking, and writing. Based on the Competence-Based Curriculum, speaking is one of the four basic competences that the students should gain well.  Meanwhile, developing speaking skills needs strategies or ways to make them easier to learn. This article describes the speaking learning strategies which were used by the English language students. The subjects of this study were the English language students of the fourth semester in English Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of Sarjanawiyata Tamansiswa University, Yogyakarta. The data were collected through questionnaire and interview. This study used mix method and descriptive qualitative technique of analysis study which covered reducing data, displaying data and drawing data conclusion. The results from the analysis showed that almost all of the strategies proposed by Oxford (1990) were used by the students such as memory strategies, cognitive strategies, compensation strategies, metacognitive strategies, affective strategies and social strategies. Moreover, it showed significant correlation between the speaking learning strategies used by the students and the result of assessment.

Abstract

This paper aims to describe: (1) the implementation of Project-Based Learning (PBL) to improve students’ speaking skill in SMK N 1 Bantul, (2) the strengths and challenges of the implementation of PBL. This study is an action research consisting of two cycles. The results showed that (1) many students have the opportunity to speak English during the PBL implementation; besides, the students’ interest in learning English increased significantly, (2) the strengths of PBL implementation deals with team work as stimulation for interactions and students could integrate their language skill to social skill and technology. The challenges were: the teacher could not closely assist and monitor the students’ project doing directly. The project making also requires sufficient time. From the results and discussion, it can be concluded that PBL can be used as an alternative learning model since it supports not only language skill improvement but also social and technological skills integration.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to develop the sticky flannel book for increasing students’ vocabulary mastery. The type of this research is Research and Development (R&D). The subjects were 28 learners of the fourth grade in the Minomartani 6 elementary school. The research instruments were questionnaires, interview guidelines, and observation guidelines. The products of this research are sticky flannel book as the medium and “English Time” as the student book based on the genre based approach. There are two units in the book. The title of the first unit is “Fruits” and the title of second unit is “Things in the Classroom”. There are four activities revealing four language skills. The activities apply the four steps of genre based approach: BKOF, MDOT, JCOT, and ICOT.  The results of expert judgment questionnaires show that the products are categorized into good media and materials, and appropriate to be used in teaching English for the fourth grade of elementary students although there were some revisions that should be done.

Abstract

The objective of the study are to describe (1) the kinds of expressive speech act used by Steve Rogers in Civil War movie, and (2) the S-P-E-A-K-I-N-G model used by Steve Rogers in the movie. This research reveals of expressive speech to express the main character’s feeling, attitude, and emotion. The data were collected by watching the movie and reading the movie script to get information about the utterances that were used by Steve Rogers in Civil War movie. The findings show that there are ten kinds of expressive speech acts in forty five utterances found in the movie and Steve Rogers used S-P-E-A-K-I-N-G model in cultural context; due to in his interaction, he showed care, sympathy and empathy to others.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze gender discrimination reflected in novel Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston. This study reveals kinds of gender discrimination as reflected in the novel and how the gender discrimination affects characters as reflected in the novel. This study employed feminist approach. The writers only focused on analyzing gender discrimination issue limited on woman. The results show that the kinds of gender discrimination found in the novel were natality inequality, mortality inequality, household inequality, special opportunity inequality, and professional inequality. The effect of gender discrimination covered physical problems, psychological problems, impact on women’s family and dependent, and impact on social.

Abstract

The objectives of this study are to describe students’ writing skills taught using picture series, to describe the students’ writing skills taught using traditional method, to find out significant difference between students’ writing skills taught using picture series and traditional method, and to find out a better class in producing writing skills e.g. experimental or control class. This research was experimental research. The population of this research was the eighth grade students of SMP N 2 Banguntapan. The samples were taken using lottery technique. For collecting the data, the researchers used paragraph writing test, in the pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed using SPSS. The research findings showed that (1) the level of students’ writing skills taught using picture series was “very high” at the category scale of 75-above, (2) the level of students’ writing skills taught using traditional method was “high” at the category scale of  58.33-75, (3) the sig. (2-tailed) value of t-test was 0.000 implying there was a significant difference between students’ writing skills taught using picture series and traditional method, and (4) the result of t-test showed that the experimental class produced better writing than the control class.

Abstract

This study is about an analysis of maxims flouting in the movie script of The Jungle Book. The aims of this study are to describe the flouted maxims and to describe the function of the maxims flouting. This study applied discourse analysis. The writers got the data from the movie script and used Grice’s theory called Cooperative Principles with the four types of maxims: maxim of quality, maxim of quantity, maxim of relation, and maxim of manner. The study presented that the most frequently fulfilled is maxim of quality, while least frequently is maxim of relation. Most frequently flouted by the characters is the flouting maxim of quantity, and then least frequent is flouting maxim of quality. The functions of flouting maxims used by the characters of flouting maxims were beneficial to avoid discomfort and to give more explanations (prolixity).

Abstract

In social interaction, people need to be aware of others’ faces to consider their feelings or maintain the relationship. In order to save a person’s face, people are supposed to use politeness strategies. The objective of the paper is to describe the types and functions of politeness strategies used by Claire Peterson in The Boy Next Door movie. This research belongs to discourse analysis and uses the theory of politeness strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson. The data is movie script of The Boy Next Door movie which is in the form of words and utterances. Based on the analysis, there are 37 utterances containing politeness strategies used by Claire Peterson. In detail, she uses the strategy of bald on record seven times or 18.9%, positive politeness 20 times or 54%, negative politeness 9 times or 24.4%, and off record once or 2.7%. The most frequent politeness strategy used by Claire Peterson is “offer and promise” which belongs to positive politeness strategy. This strategy is used 7 times or 18.9%. In general, she uses politeness strategies to maintain and build good relationship with the others in her daily life.
