Abstract

The objectives of this research are (1) to find out the linguistic features used in Revlon advertisements,(2)to describe the persuasion techniques of language style used in Revlon advertisements,and (3) to find out the most dominant linguistic feature used in Revlon advertisements.This research was conducted by using qualitative and discourse analysis method.The researcher used 31 Revlon advertisements.The research data were collected by choosing the clauses or phrases from Revlon Cosmetics which showed some linguistics features and persuasion techniques.Research findings showed that (1) there were two linguistic features used in Revlon advertisements. They were lexical feature and syntactic feature. (2) the persuasion techniques that used in Revlon were pioneering stage, competitive stage and retentive stage. (3) the most dominant linguistic feature used in lexical feature was simple vocabulary which occurred 58.82% while in syntactic feature was incomplete sentence which occurred 30.43%.

Abstract

Reading skill becomes one of the skills that should be mastered by students. The students needs to know how to read an English text in order to develop their potential in learning. To achieve the goal, it is necessary to have techniques that can help students to read well. One of the technique that can be used is Jigsaw technique. The objectives of this study are: 1) to describe the implementation of using Jigsaw technique in improving students’ reading skill on the narrative text of ninth grade of Kejar Paket B in PKBM Sejahtera Yogyakarta, and 2) to describe the result of the implementation. This research was a classroom action research which consisted of two cycles. The results of cycle 1 were: 1) the students were motivated to learn during the lesson, 2) the students enjoyed the learning process using the Jigsaw technique. The results of cycle 2 were: 1) the students were more motivated in showing their effort to study. 2) the students were more active in discussing the generic structure, the main idea, and the topic of the text.  The strategy was helpful in teaching narrative text. It could make the students got motivated to read the text and active during the discussion.

Abstract

The aims of the study are to find out whether the students have certain reading strategies in comprehending English texts and what reading strategies are applied by students in comprehending English texts. The research is an ex-post facto study. The subjects were 88 students of class VIIA, VIIB, and VIID. The sample was random sampling method. The data collection method was surveying by filling out the questionnaire. The items in the research instrument were developed by adopting reading strategies by Thomas Kral (1995). Questionnaire items were developed in nine items and divided into four types of strategies: surveying, scanning, skimming, and phase reading. The data analysis was based on descriptive statistics obtained from the results of data processing through quantitative descriptive. The results indicate that students of class VII A, VIIB, and VIID of SMP N 3 Pleret usually used a reading strategy of surveying (mean 4.06) and phase reading (mean 4.0). When they read English texts, they already have awareness to find out what reading strategies they have to apply so that they are able to comprehend the texts. The mean values of scanning and skimming strategies are 3.56 and 3.19. The strategies were sometimes applied by students in comprehending English texts.

Abstract

The purposes of this research are 1) to identify the types of expressive speech acts used by the main characters of Dear John movie and 2) to find out the function of the expressive speech acts used.The type of this research is discourse analysis mixed with quantitative method to explain the data further. The data of the research was taken from  Dear John movie. The instruments of this research were the utterances from the main characters of Dear John movie which categorized and put into observation table. The data were analyzed based on the theories of Yule (1996) and Clark (1995) of expressive speech acts to answer the research questions. The results of this research showed that the expressive speech act used by the main characters of Dear John movie consisted of 6 types out of 7 types. They are the expression of pleasure, liking, disliking thanking, apologizing, and the expression of praise. The type of speech act that was not found in the utterances of the main character was congratulating. The most dominant type that was found in the utterances of the main character was thanking.

Abstract

The present study aims to describe the form, function and the word formation of US military jargon in “The Expendables 3” movie. Data collection was administered through movie observation and orthographic transcription. Data analysis was administered through identification, data reduction, classification and description. The results reveal 4 forms of jargon based on the word class including jargon in word forms, phrases forms, abbreviation and acronym with word forms jargon as the highest frequency of use. The second frequency of usage is jargon in phrase form which occurs in 12 phrases. Abbreviation occurs only in 2 forms and acronym occurs in 1 usage. US military jargon in the movie has 3 functions: to show the identity of the group, to strengthen the intimacy among the users in group and to show that someone is mastering the skill in military. The last finding of word formation presents 9 jargon formations and two of them indicate two combinations of two word formations and most of jargons are formed by borrowing.

Abstract

The research focused on teaching speaking using audio visual media. The objectives of the study are how to implement audio visual media to improve students’ speaking skill and to describe the effectiveness of using audio visual media in the teaching of speaking. This study used a classroom action research design. The researcher and the collaborator worked together in designing the lesson plan, setting the criteria of success, implementing the action, observing the action, and having reflection. The subjects of this study were twenty eight students of the eleventh grade students of SMA N 1 Ngaglik, Sleman in academic year 2017/2018. This study was conducted in two cycles by following the procedures of the action research i.e. planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. The activities of each cycle were Pre-speaking activities, While-speaking Activities, and Post-speaking activities. The result of the study showed that the use of audio visual media were able to improve the students' speaking skills. The percentage of the students achieving the score above predetermined minimum passing grade (KKM) had improved from 7.15% (2 of 28 students) in the preliminary study to 64.2% (18 of 28 students) in Cycle 1, and to 96.4% (27 28 students) in Cycle 2. Besides, the mean scores of each aspect of fluency, grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, confidence were also increased.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe: 1) the implementation of realia to teach speaking skill of the fourth graders of SDN KaranganyarGunungkidul and 2) the media that was used to motivate students to actively engage in teaching speaking skill of the fourth graders of SDN KaranganyarGunungkidul. This study is a classroom action research. The subjects of this study were the fourth graders of SDN KaranganyarGunungkidul which consisted of 32 students. The research was conducted in two cycles containing three stages namely exploration, elaboration, and confirmation. The data were collected through observation, interview, field note, and document. The result showed the implementations of using realia were successful in motivating the students to speak. In the cycle one, the realia were used as the object in introducing vocabulary in exploration stage asthe aids in describing object about things in the classroom. As a result of using realia, the students were motivated to speak and able to describe the things in the classroom. In the cycle 2, the realia were still used as the object in introducing vocabulary in exploration stage and in elaboration stage. The realia werethe aids in describing objects about family. As a result, the students were motivated to speak and able to describe about their family. Realia that can be used to motivate the students to actively engage in teaching speaking were real object and puppet.

Abstract

There were some reasons why this research was carried out 1) to describe the setting of the novel entitled Agnes Grey and 2) to describe the character educational values reflected in the main character of Agnes Grey novel. The approach of this research was a qualitative study. The object of the research was a novel entitled Agnes Grey written by Anne Bronte. In the process of collecting data, the researcher used document analysis by reviewing some literary books. The data analysis technique was inductive content analysis. After analysing the data, the researcher found that 1) there were three types of settings found in the main character of Agnes Grey novel; they were the setting of place, time, and culture 2) the character educational values in this research consisted of  religiousity, honesty, discipline, hard work, creativity, autonomy, democracy, curiosity, rewarding achievement, love peace, joy of reading, environmental care, social care, and responsibility.

Abstract

This research analyzed Ki Hadjar Dewantara’s Leadership Trilogy as found in Tetsuko Kurayanagi’s“Totto-Chan: The Little Girl at the Window” novel. The objectives of this research were to 1) describe Ki HadjarDewantara’s leadership trilogy as found in Totto-Chan: The Little Girl at the Window novel; and 2) find out how the aspects of Ki Hadjar Dewantara’s Leadership Trilogy found in the novel can be implemented in real life situations. This research applied a qualitative approach. The data collection technique was the document analysis of O’Leary model, which consisted of three steps, namely plan, interrogate and reflect/refine. The data analysis technique was inductive content analysis, which consisted of four steps, they are: open coding, grouping, creating the categories, and abstraction. The results of this research showed that Ki Hadjar Dewantara’s leadership trilogy found in Totto-Chan: The Little Girl at the Window novel were Ing Ngarsa Sung Tuladha, Ing Madya MangunKarsa, and Tut Wuri Handayani. Ki HadjarDewantara’s leadership trilogy can also be implemented in the real-life situation, especially in education field, for example at Senior High School of Taman Madya Ibu Pawiyatan Yogyakarta.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to describe code switching used by an English teacher in the English teaching and learning process in SMP N 1 Manisrenggo. This research was conducted to analyze (1) the types of code switching and (2) the reasons for using code switching in the English teaching and learning process. This research was a descriptive qualitative research. The techniques of collecting data were observation, video audio recording, and interview. After gathering the data, the researcher transcribed and classified the types of code switching and the reasons for using code switching. The result of this research showed there were two types of code switching and four reasons for using code switching.Based on the analysis of the data, situational code switching appeared more often than metaphorical code switching, and the reasons for using code switching most frequently appeared in the teacher’s utterances is Repetition used for Clarification.
