Abstract

The research aims to (1) describe the implementation and (2) find out the results of using error feedback to improve students’ writing skill of the seventh grade students at SMP N 3 Berbah Sleman. This action research conducted in two cycles which the subject was the students of VII D of SMP N 3 Berbah Sleman consisting of thirty-one students. To collect the data,the writer conducted the observation and interview. The qualitative data were obtained through observation and interviews. The results show that (1) the implementation of error feedback in improving writing skill covers pre-writing, writing the product, feedback giving, revising the product, and writing the final product. (2)The result of using error feedback in improving writing skill is the students became more interested and enthusiastic in learning writing descriptive text.The students’ interest was increased.

Abstract

This study aims at discovering the effect of You Tube video project to improve students' achievement in speaking skill including pronunciation, grammatical accuracy, vocabulary, fluency, and interactive communication. It used an experimental design involving 83 Nursing students in Bantul: 44 students of Control group and 39 students of Experimental Group using simple random sampling technique. This study used statistical t-test to discover the effect of using You Tube video project in improving the students' speaking skill, particularly in English for Nursing based on the score of pretest and posttest of both groups. The t test results labeled equal variances in which t-value was 3.077, the degree of freedom (df=81), and t-table was at 1.989. The difference was significant because t-test result was higher than t table. It indicated that the achievement in the students' speaking skill through You Tube video project was improved.

Abstract

The objectives of this research are to describe: (1) the implementation of wordpress to teach listening on narrative text for eleventh grade students and (2) the results of the implementation of wordpress in teaching listening for eleventh grade students. This research was classroom action research which consisted of two cycles. The data analysis used qualitative data analysis. The subject of this research was the eleventh grade students of SMA PIRI 1 Yogyakarta. In the collecting data technique, the researcher used observasiton, interview, and documentation. The result showed that (a) they were motivated and interested in learning process. (b) the students vocabularies increased and they were happier when gained high score. From the results and discussions, it can be concluded that by using wordpress, it could make the students motivated to practice or active in teaching learning process and supported the students to improve their listening skill.

Abstract

Secondary students need to learn some genres in writing. One of them is recount. This kind of genre involves certain feature perfomance regarding generic structure and language features. However, many students indicated that they had constrains in applying these rules even though the students had gotten special training. This is a case study in writing recount texts held as a competition part of English Olympiade for Secondary Schools in Wonosobo, Indonesia. The purpose is to reveal grammatical errors in students’ writing recount texts. The writer collected the data from students’ written texts compatated in this event. The findings were considered important to improve PS students’ writing perfomance, especially related to grammar problems features and to develop approaches of teaching writing for English teachers toward their students.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the procedures of using crossword puzzle to improve vocabulary mastery of the fifth grade students of SD N Golo.The design of this research was an action research. The research consisted of two cycles. The subject of the study was the fifth grade students of SD N Golo and the English teacher as the collaborator. The data collecting was done by observation, interview, and field notes. Hence, the data were in the form field notes and interview transcripts. The data analyzing used qualitative method in three steps: reducing the data, displaying the data, and drawing the conclusion. The result of the data showed that the use of crossword puzzle technique was able to improve the students’ vocabulary mastery. Based on the qualitative data, most of the students were active in learning activities and they could memorize the vocabulary.  It could be seen from the students’ participation in responding the researcher’s instruction and the score of their task in the cycle 1 and cycle 2.

Abstract

 The present study aims to describe the students’ obstacles in learning English and their strategies in learning English at the senior high school. This study employs qualitative descriptive method. The data were collected through Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and interviews to get the naturality of the data. The study was conducted at SMA -Al -Ikhlas and SMA Negeri 8 Lubuklinggau, involving twenty students from both schools. The results indicate that many students of both schools have obstacles in learning English on pronunciation, understanding meaning and grammar.  Their learning strategies include social strategies, cognitive strategies, and meta-cognitive strategies.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to describe (1) the types of Ki Hajar Dewantara’s Leadership Trilogy in Lean on Me movie, and (2) the influences of the main character’s leadership to the teachers and students in the movie. This study used qualitative research. Theobject of this study wasLean on Me movie’s transcript.There were 32 utterances analyzed in the movie to find all indicators of each component of the trilogy. Generally, the results of the researchshowed that the three principles of Ki Hajar Dewantara were expressed by Joe Clark as the main character in the movie; they wereing ngarso sung tulodo, ing madyo mangun karso, andtut wuri handayani. Based on the anaysis, the results showed; (1) the main character could be said as a good leader as he fulfilled  all the three principles of Ki Hajar Dewantara’s Leadership Trilogy. There were 16 utterances in tut wuri handayani, 11 utterancesof ing ngarso sung tulodo, and 5 utterances  ing madyo mangun karso that were shown from his attitudes, roles, and actions in being supportive, role model, and motivator to his teachers and students; (2) the main character, through the three principles of Ki Hajar Dewantara’s Leadership Trilogy influenced his teachers and the students.

Abstract

The study aimed at investigating the affective role of integrating language  awareness  into  grammar  learning  in  the  Indonesian  EFL  (English  as  a  Foreign  Language)  context.  In the study, questionnaires and interviews on language awareness were given to fifty participants. The  findings  show that  majority  of  the  participants  responded  to  positively  change their perceptions of the relationship between learning grammar and language skills. The conclusion underlines the necessity of language awareness in grammar learning in the Indonesian EFL context as well as its future development to facilitate second/foreign language teaching and learning.

Abstract

This study aims are to identify problems of teaching English to Junior High School students, implement the animation video in the learning process, describe the effect of the media to the students’ motivation in the learning process. This research used the principle of classroom action research.  The subjects of this research were28 students of eight-grade students inSMP N 1 Banguntapan. There were 2 cycles applied in this research. The researcher used observation, interviews, lesson plan, and questionnaire to collect the data. The result showed that there were some problems faced by the students in the learning process such as lack of vocabulary, uninteresting learning process, less participation, and lack of grammar knowledge. The animation video was implemented as media through a lesson plan in the learning process. The implementation of the video caused the students more interested in the teaching and learning process.

Abstract

The objectives of this research are (1) to find out the linguistic features used in Revlon advertisements,(2)to describe the persuasion techniques of language style used in Revlon advertisements,and (3) to find out the most dominant linguistic feature used in Revlon advertisements.This research was conducted by using qualitative and discourse analysis method.The researcher used 31 Revlon advertisements.The research data were collected by choosing the clauses or phrases from Revlon Cosmetics which showed some linguistics features and persuasion techniques.Research findings showed that (1) there were two linguistic features used in Revlon advertisements. They were lexical feature and syntactic feature. (2) the persuasion techniques that used in Revlon were pioneering stage, competitive stage and retentive stage. (3) the most dominant linguistic feature used in lexical feature was simple vocabulary which occurred 58.82% while in syntactic feature was incomplete sentence which occurred 30.43%.
