Abstract

The phenomenon of gemstone or in Indonesia known as “batu akik” happened greatly in the early to the middle of 2015 and has become attention among the people in Indonesia. Although it cannot be identified precisely when the phenomenon of people massively wearing and collecting gemstones has begun, this study aims to present an early review of this phenomenon seeing from linguistics study. This study revealed three linguistics points regarding to this phenomenon.  First, from several vocabulary of “batu”, most of them have the same phonetic form, that is [batu]. Second, the variation of “batu” vocabulary experienced changes in bilabial sound from /b/ to become /w/; extra aspirated voice [Bh] in phoneme [b]; and bilabial phoneme /b/ becomes dorsa velar /k/. Third, this study reveals that people’s interest in wearing and collecting gemstone all over Indonesia happened as the result of cultural similarity which lies in vocabulary “batu” that exists almost in all tribes, regions, and cities in Indonesia. Keywords: gemstone, local language, linguistic comparison

Abstract

This study aims at investigating the gender identity formation of some Indonesian women EFL teachers as they had experiences in advancing their study abroad. The study adopted a qualitative methodology within a feminist framework. The data were generated from some women who had been teaching English in Indonesia for at least two years prior to coming to another country to further their education. Through self-completion questionnaires and focus group interviews, the participants shared their lived-experiences and their adjustments as they were exposed to different cultural movements transnationally, between Indonesia and another country. How these women EFL teachers construct their gender identity during their transnational movement and how English actually influences these processes is the focus of the study. The findings reveal how the processes of gender identity construction were formed through governmental policy and socio-cultural values in the society. The findings also show how for these women EFL teachers their professional milieu was a site of contestation for women to promote their status in the society and gender equality. Finally the study highlights that English language is viewed as a benefit to elevate women’s social status as it facilitated their socialization in professional and educational contexts when they furthered their study in another country. Drawing on the findings, further research is suggested around the issue of gender identity construction of men EFL teachers in order to get more comprehensive picture. Keywords: gender identity, women EFL teachers, English language

Abstract

African literature has strong relation with colonialism, not only because they had ever been colonized but also because of civil war. Civil Peace (1971), a short story written by Chinua Achebe, tells about how Nigerian survive and have to struggle to live after Nigerian Civil War. It is about the effects of the war on the people, and the “civil peace” that followed. The Nigerian Civil War, also known as the Nigerian-Biafran War, 6 July 1967–15 January 1970, was a political conflict caused by the attempted annexation of the southeastern provinces of Nigeria as the self-proclaimed Republic of Biafra. The conflict was the result of economic, ethnic, cultural and religious tensions among the various peoples of Nigeria. Knowing the relation between the story and the Nigerian Civil War, it is assured that there is a history depicted in Civil Peace. In this article, the writer portrays the history and the phenomenon of colonization in Nigeria by using new historical and postcolonial criticism approaches. Keywords: history, colonization, civil war

Abstract

This study analyzes the issues of traditional patriarchy and the reconstruction of gender roles of three books; The Breadwinner (Deborah Ellis), Parvana’s Journey (Deborah Ellis), and Wanting Mor (Rukhsana Khan). All these three books are considered as multicultural literature because of the theme of war and violence in Afghanistan culture. The findings confirm gender roles are unstable and inconstant. These three books show evidences of how gender roles are adaptable and changeable depends on what gender is favored in the social interactions. What is more, the institutional perspectives provide ways of reasoning gender roles are altered and changed. By observing Afghan social practices and policies in their culture, these books also confirm that most social institutions in this culture are gendered to favor patriarchy dominations. Therefore, the main characters of these books portray the shifts and changes of their gender roles to save them from ‘disparate treatment’ in the society.Key word: patriarchal dominations, gender roles, Afghanistan culture
