THE ROLE OF LITERATURE IN INDONESIAN DEVELOPMENT PROCESS Erna Wati

In Indonesia, literature has been one of critical media to respond to the political and social issues. This study reviewed three literary works of the three Indonesian writers from different era: Bumi Manusia (1980) by Pramoedya Ananta Toer, Potret Pembangunan dalam Puisi (1980) by W.S. Rendra and Laskar Pelangi (2008) by Andrea Hirata. In this study, the writer analyzed how each literary work conceive the idea of political and educational development and how they contribute positive impacts to the development process of Indonesia society. The findings confirm each literary work has some similarities to the other in regards to contribute the idea of Indonesia development. The three authors agreed that education is an effective aspect to develop Indonesia society. They also have the same opinion that education which has a better quality is not always come from the formal institution. They depict a wider concept of education which is obtained from the fantastic culture and moral values.Keywords: Indonesian literature, the role of literature, development

PERSEPSI SN DAN MR TENTANG PRESIDEN JOKO WIDODO: ANALISIS WACANA TRANSKRIP REKAMAN PERCAKAPAN ‘PAPA MINTA SAHAM’ Ali Kusno

The recording of “Papa Minta Saham“conversation captured the Indonesian society’s attention in the end of 2015. It recorded the conversation between SN and MR profiteering the name of President Jokowi. In addition, another topic of conversation such as both SN and MR’s perception about President Jokowi was also revealed in this recording. This research aims to analyze the perception of SN and MR about President Jokowi’s character. Applying descriptive qualitative method, the language contained in the “Papa Minta Saham” recording was used as the research object. The data and data source were the transcript document and the recording conversation of “Papa Minta Saham”. This research used discourse analysis. The findings showed diverse negative perceptions regarding President Jokowi’s character: stubborn (koppig), difficult to build a mutual understanding, a high level of ego, strong determination, tough and dangerous. Apart from these negative characters, Jokowi is also considered as a kind and brave type of person. Based on the findings, there is an indication that public perception towards President Jokowi’s characters could be different from that of SN and MR. Politicians also speak language containing various strategies that prove the distinction between their public speech and their actual speech. Politicians could change their negative perceptions into positive perceptions as well as their languages to accommodate their interests.Key words: perception discourse analysis, Papa Minta Saham transcript, perception of President Jokowi

This study is an attempt to address the issue of how extensive reading (ER) as a supplementary reading approach is able to encourage students’ critical literacy. Further, how ER influences students’ perception of critical literacy related to students’ viewpoint of the texts is examined thoroughly. ER in this study was employed as a supplementary reading activity where students were engaged to read in a large number of materials on a wide range of topics and they had freedom to select the reading material based on its relevance to their interests, knowledge, and experience (Day & Bamford, 2002). Relating the characteristics of ER, it seemed to us that students’ understanding of the text through ER activity should be scrutinized as one important aspect in English language teaching (ELT). In order to get more comprehensive picture, questionnaires were distributed to 38 students in the class. Yet, only 3 (three) students were willing to return the questionnaire and to be interviewed based on their answers in the questionnaire. The findings revealed that ER is evidenced to motivate students to approach texts critically, challenge taken knowledge, relate the texts to world’s issues, improve their awareness of how to see and understand human beings, and question the intention of the texts from distinct viewpoints.Keywords: extensive reading, critical literacy development, EFL

The varieties of tarling music which keep changing and developing nowadays have brought two main concerns in our society: lack of identity function and music distortion. These issues may affect the loss of the originality of tarling music itself. This study aimed at knowing the development of tarling Cirebon and the change of tarling music at present day. The method used in this study was descriptive qualitative. The data regarding the art and tarling music were collected through library research and interview. Generally, tarling music is divided into two types: classical tarling music and modern Cirebon tarling music. Tarling music is the combination of different music genres like pop and dangdut. The collection of ideas of a certain community and that of the consolidated thoughts have become the sources of the tarling music development.Keywords: classical tarling, modern tarling, Cirebon

THE ANALYSIS OF STUDENT’S WRITING BEFORE AND AFTER THE IMPLEMENTATION OF READ-TO-WRITE APPROACH Hana Rosmawan

The focus of this article is on the analysis of student’s writing before and after the implementation of Read-to-Write Approach. Read-to-write approach is one of strategies of how to write by reading the articles what other writers have written. This study aimed to find out how the students’ writing skill can be improved through the implementation of read-to-write approach. This research used the instruments of writing tests including pre-test and post-test. The finding showed that students’ writing skill could be improved through the implementation of read-to-write approach during one cycle classroom action research which consisted of four meetings. Actually, this article searched deeply to find out how the differences between the writing results of the student after and before the implementation of read-to-write approach. The analysis was conducted by using analytic scoring rubric. The results of the analysis showed improvement on each aspect of writing.Keywords: read-to-write approach, reading and writing skill, holistic scoring rubric, analytic scoring rubric

This study discussed the use of code-switching among the late adolescents in social media Facebook. The purpose of the research was to know the types of code-switching used among the late adolescents in social media Facebook by applying Poplack theory. The other purpose was to reveal the reasons for using such types of code-switching in social media Facebook by applying Hoffman theory. The descriptive qualitative research design was used in this study. The data of the research were analyzed using Miles and Huberman method. The results of the research were: (1) there were three types of code-switching used by the late adolescents in social media Facebook, (2) some reasons in using code-switching were being emphatic to others, the use of interjection to gain attention, the use of repetition for clarification, intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor, expressing identity group, softening the request or command, lexical needs, and using satire. This paper aims to evaluate the translation of cultural terms in English version of of the Hirata’s Laskar Pelangi. This paper investigates also the translation quality of those cultural terms. The data, in this study, are the terms of culture that exist in the novel. The finding of the cultural term is divided into five categories. It consists of ecology, material, social, organization, customs, ideas, motion and habits. Overall, translation cultural terms lead to reduce the level of acceptability and readability of the translation quality.Keywords: translation, cultural terms, laskar pelangi, rainbow troops

Anxiety is considered having negative effects for most students in learning foreign language, especially English. It has attracted researchers’ attention to do the investigation on foreign language anxiety as a factor which inhibits students to learn the target language successfully. Concerning with this issue, this correlational research was emphasized on investigating the relationship between foreign language anxiety and students’ English achievement. Fifty-five eighth grade students of MTS Sulaiman Yasin Samarinda were asked to fill out 33 items of Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS). The Pearson Product Moment Correlation showed that anxiety had significant negative correlation with students’ English achievement (r = -.258, p<.01). Pa’rawana and sayyang pattuddu music are ones of the traditional arts owned by Mandar tribe. These are very popular and always presented every year, especially at khatam Qur’an ceremony. The performance of pa’rawana and sayyang pattuddu music is always based on the socio-cultural suitability of the Mandar people who cannot be separated from their religious system. It is marked by a procession of the Qur’an recital by children. They will be paraded around the village accompanied by pa’rawana and sayyang pattuddu music. The whole process of khatam of Qur’an is very complex. In addition to the ceremonial procession, performing arts are also involved, especially pa’rawana and sayyang pattuddu music. The presentation of pa’rawana and sayyang pattuddu music is a combination of several forms of art in every performance.
