Abstract

The COVID 19 pandemic has affected living systems around the world; one of them is in the education system. It has led to the complete closure of schools, universities and colleges around the world. In response to this situation, many schools, universities and colleges are encouraged to use distance learning programs and open education applications and platforms in which schools and teachers can use these platforms to reach students remotely and limit educational interruptions. In this research, the website (www.er-central.com) was used as one of the distance learning programs for extensive listening by EFL students. This research aims to determine whether there is an effect of websites used by English language learners on the global spread of the COVID 19 pandemic. In this research, the reserchers used quantitative research in pre-experimental method design using one group of pre-tests and post-tests.. In pre-experimental research design, the researcher used concept one group Pre-test and Post-test for the third semester in university. The result of the data analysis indicated that there was significant difference of student’ test before and after being taught by using website. It can be said that there is a significant difference of student’s score after the treatment. It means that the website used is effective and can be used as a distance learning program for extensive listening in pandemic situations.
THE GLOBAL READING STRATEGY ON READING COMPREHENSION ACHIEVEMENT AMONG ELEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS

Abstract

Numerous researches have been undertaken over the last several decades to evaluate the knowledge of the usage of reading strategies. However, this study has primarily focused on the impact of the Global Reading Strategy on students' reading comprehension achievement. The population in this study was eleventh-grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Palembang in the academic year 2021/2022, the sample was 64 students collected as the representative of 347 students. This study was a quantitative descriptive study. The data was collected using a questionnaire and a test, and then analyzed using correlational (Spearman rho) and regression analysis. SPSS Software22 was used to calculate the test results. The results revealed a substantial association (r =.878) between students' reading techniques and their reading comprehension achievement. Reading techniques influenced reading comprehension achievement by 0.759 percent, or 75.9%. Meanwhile, the F-test revealed that the F-obtained was 195.152 with a significant level of p 0.05, which was higher than the F-table value of 3.99. The alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted while the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected since the F-obtained was higher than the F-table. It suggests that students' reading techniques had a significant influence on reading comprehension achievement among Eleventh-Grade students at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Palembang.
EMPOWERING SPEAKING SKILLS THROUGH SPARKOL VIDEO SCRIBE: A CASE OF SMA STUDENTS

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to find out whether or not there was a significant improvement in speaking skills by using Sparkol Video Scribe with Zoom Application and whether or not there was a significant difference in speaking skills between the tenth-grade students who were taught by using Sparkol Video Scribe with Zoom Application and those who were not. This research used a quasi-experimental design. The population of this study was the tenth grade of SMA LTI IGM Palembang. The paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test were used to analyze the hypotheses. The results showed that the students’ speaking skills of recount text were significantly improved after they were taught by using Sparkol Video Scribe, and there was a significant difference in speaking skills of recount text to the tenth-grade students who were taught by using Sparkol Video Scribe with zoom application and those who were not.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out whether Think Talk Write on writing skill significant which was effective or not. This research used true experimental method. The population was all the tenth grade students which consisted of 189 students. The samples were taken by random sampling technique as many as 44 students. The data were collected by using test (pre and posttest). The result of the test was analyzed by independent sample t-test. The mean or average in posttest of experimental group was 78.868. It was higher than the mean or average posttest of the control group which was 60.532. The result of tobtained was 9.375 with the significant level p<0.05; df was 42 and ttable was 2.0181. Since the value of tobtained was higher than ttable, means null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It can be stated that teaching recount text using Think Talk Write was more significant effective on writing achievement than conventional method to the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Sekampung.

Abstract

This research was conducted to know the students’ reading ability at computer program in Bina Insan University and to find out the good technique in teaching and learning process which appropriate for the students. The method was used in this research was descriptive qualitative research. There was 6 classes in computer program with 185 students as the population, and for the informant in this research was 12 students. From this research was found that most of the students still have some problems in teaching and learning process especially in reading comprehension, and comprehend the instruction when they operate the computer program. Students also fell that English is a scary subject because they just got t know English lessons when they were in Junior High School.

Abstract

Project-based learning (PBL) is becoming more and more popular in mainstream education. It is a type of teaching method that allows students to learn something by doing a project devised by the teacher. One project-based learning method used by researchers was through the use of drama. The use of drama in language teaching has long been considered a legitimate practice. According to a recent literature review, English language learners (ELLs) may benefit even more from using drama in the classroom. The purpose of this study was to find out students' perceptions of performing drama as project-based learning in English language learning. This study used descriptive-quantitative method of collecting data through questionnaire. The study found that drama is the best option to facilitate learners' experience of autonomous learning and increase students' opportunities to learn English.

Abstract

The aim of this study was conducted to find out the students’ perceptions on the use of WhatsApp in writing activities at SMPN 1 Pagar Gunung. This study used a qualitative research design. The participants of this study were the eleventh grade students of SMPNegeri 1 Pagar Gunung which consisted of six students by usingpurposive sampling with maximum variation sampling. The data were collected by using semi-structured interview through open ended questions. The data were analyzed by using thematic analysis technique. The findings of this study revealed that there were advantages and disadvantages on the use of WhatsApp in writing activities, as follows: (a) perceived progress of vocabulary, (b) independent from time and location, (c) internet connection problem, (d) costly to use, and (e) no grammatical improvement. Then, by knowing the students’ perceptions on the use of WhatsApp in writing activities, the students can explore by themselves on the use of e-learning to upgrade the English proficiency.

Abstract

This research deals with the analysis of illocutionary act found in Barack Obama’s victory speeches. The purpose of this research was to analyze the illocutionary act which produced by Barack Obama in his victory speeches.This research used descriptive qualitative method where the researcher analyzed one by one the type of illocutionary act which produced by Barack Obama in his victory speeches. The researcher used the theory from Alston for illocutionary act. From the research, the researcher found that there were 31 statements of illocutionary act produced by Barack Obama in his victory speeches. They were 20 statements for expressive, 7 statements of directives and 4 statements of comissive. The researcher did not find any excertive in Barack Obama’s victory speeches. The result showed that the most dominant type of illocutionary act found in Barack Obama’s victory speeches was expressive.

Abstract

Argumentative essay writing has been becoming a challenge for EFL students as Students must persuade their readers to share their viewpoints on the material they write. Google Translate is regarded as a learning resource that may be used to help pupils with their writing and to broaden their vocabulary.. The objective of this study was to describe how the fourth semester students of English education study program Sriwijaya University utilized Google Translate to improve their writing skills and enhance their vocabulary. This study used the descriptive qualitative method in describing the finding from documentation and a set of the questionnaire given to students to know their opinion about using Google Translate during their learning process. The findings showed that there are both advantages and disadvantages in utilizing Google Translate in writing class for English education students, the advantages were students were able to enrich their vocabulary and improved writing skill as it useful for students to look up words, synonyms, fast result, and students knew how to pronounce a word correctly and the disadvantages were students may find it appeared to produce bad sentence structure if translate long sentence, would not allow them to be creative even could make students become lazy and could lose their confidence and brought them depended on Google Translate.

Abstract

AbstractA project-based learning is one of strategies that integrates theory with practice; the students are challenged to work in teams in order to develop a project. This study aimed to determine the efficiency of project-based learning for developing students’ digital literacy of reading at English Education Study Program of Universitas Muhammadiyah Palembang, Indonesia. This research was done through qualitative descriptive study without test hypotheses. The data was taken that included the data regarding from the efficiency of project-based learning for developing students’ digital literacy was reviewed from the students’ perspectives. The sample was 24 students and the class was second semester students in the reading learning process was reviewed from the student's perspectives. Collecting the research data by using instruments, those were observation and questionnaire. From the results of the questionnaire in this study, it indicated that the project-based learning strategy has a positive impact on student learning, motivation and performance in digital literacy of reading. This study finally revealed that the incorporation of project-based learning enables the creation of real-life experiences, so it showed that the efficiency of project-based learning for developing students’ digital literacy was declared  good and effective.Keywords: Efficiency; Project-Based Learning; Digital Literacy.
