Abstract

On November 11, 2017, MUI (Indonesian Council of Ulama), DMI (Indonesian Mosque Council) have launched the national program named eco masjid. Eco masjid is a program of sustainable mosque through efforts to preserve the environment and natural resources oriented to on aspects of idarah (management), imarah (prosperity activities), and ri’ayah (maintenance and facilities) which dominantly related to its building. In Indonesia, sustainable building principles are widely promoted by GBCI (Green Building Council Indonesia) and have been applied to various types of buildings. However, it has been realized that the study on the implementation of sustainable principle in the mosque is very rare. The research was carried out qualitatively by using direct observation on the pilot mosque to capture all implemented sustainable building principle. Based on the questionnaire to 44 participants which reflected 44 DKM (Dewan Kemakmuran Masjid), the result came up that applying water efficient faucet, using the LED lamp and sticker posting are the most achievable sustainable practices in the existing mosques. The authors suggest to all related bodies to determine the standard on how to assess the implementation of eco Masjid program

Abstract

AbstractThis paper explains the significance of erecting buildings in Islam. Four themes are discussed in the paper: 1) building as a basis of civilization, 2) building as an indispensable and creditable activity, 3) the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and building, and 4) avoiding vices in building. The paper concludes that in Islam erecting buildings is a very important enterprise, in that such signifies the creation of a physical locus of the daily individual, family and social activities of Muslims. Thus, the existence of Islamic built environment is essential for the realization of the divine purpose on earth. The chief duty that Islamic built environment performs is the facilitation of such a realization. While writing the paper, I have tried as much as possible to draw on the original sources that deal with the theme at hand, the most important of which, certainly, are the Holy Qur’an and the authentic compilations of Prophet Muhammad’s words and actions. Finally, the paper aims to enhance the awareness, both of the professionals and general readership, as to the importance of correctly conceptualizing, creating and using Islamic built environment. The approach in the paper is conceptual, rather than empirical. Keywords: Erecting Buildings, Built Environment, Islam, Muslims, Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)  AbstrakMakalah ini menjelaskan pentingnya pendirian bangunan dalam Islam. Abstract

One of the criteria of a good mosque is a good quality of building acoustic for some ibadah purposes, such as prayer and Friday speech. Mosques with medium size actually need no reinforcement system yet. Unfortunately, most of Indonesian mosques’ typological form were given very little attention about their acoustical problem. Such problems have found in almost every mosques. Therefore, some strategies are needed to fix the problem. Those strategies can be practiced on mosque’s interior surfaces such as ceiling, walls, and floor. One of the strategy is using the absorption material on the wall and the floor, beside using the reflection material on the ceiling. The placement of those materials depends on the path of the sound. The strategy can be used in every form of mosque with only  little different treatment in each mosque’s form. With this strategy, it is expected that mosques with medium size will no longer use the reinforcement system, yet the voice still can reach all of the jamaah. Thus this strategy can be used to reduce the use of energy in these buildings.

Abstract

This paper examines 19th   century Western travellers’ understanding of the ḥarīm. Focusing in  particular on visual  depictions,  it  investigates  the  misconception  and  misrepresentation  of  the  ḥarīm  in  Orientalists’ paintings and Western culture, using thework of the artist John Frederick Lewis as a main case study. Arguing that such representations oversimplify and fantasise sacred Islamic cultural experience,  this  paper,  as a counterpoint, restores a detailed understanding of the ḥarīm and defines its wider Islamic implication within Arabic culture. Applying etymology and Islamic scripture to the study of architectural design,  this study explores the centrality of the concept of ḥijāb (veil) to the organisation of physical space for women in the Islamic home. Written from the perspective of an Arabic Muslim  woman, this study seeks to explore the concept of the ḥarīm from the “Others” perspective. Abstract

he debut of colonialism along with the consequent de facto supremacy of the Western world did not onlynegatively impact on the economy and polity of the Muslim world. It has also, to some reasonable extent, polluted the social system, particularly the structure and form of cities. Human scale is gradually diminishingas a yardstick for construction and is being replaced by a mathematical one. Collectivism, which used tocharacterize Muslims' social set-up, is now being over-shadowed by stark individualism. The Islamic socialvalues which used to be the binding force that held Muslims together are now being crushed by moralrelativity. The situation becomes so chronic that many people begin to assume that Islam has a very negligiblerole to play in the formation and construction of modern cities. Kano, a predominantly Muslim state in NorthWesternNigeria, inherited a thousand year-old Islam-oriented building architecture which made it a modelIslamic city in pre-colonial Africa. Of special reference is the residential structure which no doubt reflectsIslamic culture. Unfortunately, this age-old heritage is now being pushed to the brink of extinction by thealmighty modern architecture. This paper explores the Islamic in the Kano traditional residential structure andattempts to comparatively bring into light the extent to which it is diminishing in the modern buildingarchitecture. The paper suggests blending the two for a peaceful and harmonious co-existence.

Abstract

This paper discusses the social significance of Mr. Nazeer Khan’s architecture. The discussion revolves around the relationship between Mr. Nazeer Khan’s architecture and Kerala[1] Muslims’ economic transformation, as well as Kerala state’s inter-faith harmony. The study is not about delivering judgments concerning Mr. Nazeer Khan and his architectural exploits from a sheer perspective of architecture as a synthesis of art, science and technology, for such could significantly narrow at once our purpose and focus, and could divert our attention from some vital thrusts of the subject at hand. Rather, the study is about Mr. Nazeer Khan’s architecture and Kerala’s religious and socio-economic molds, and how they correlate with each other, the latter clearly dictating and shaping the former. It is only against this expansive and complex back-drop that Mr. Nazeer Khan’s architecture could be properly observed and appreciated. A restricted and one-sided approach – regardless of what it might be -- would in all likelihood lead to some incomplete, patchy and even unfair opinions and inferences. The paper is divided into six sections: (1) Introduction: why this study? (2) Who is Mr. Nazeer Khan? (3) Kerala Muslims’ economic transformation; (4) Mr. Nazeer Khan’s architecture and Kerala’s inter-faith harmony; (5) Mr. Nazeer Khan’s architecture: diversity in unity; (6) Conclusion. The content of this study is based, mainly, on the author’s lengthy interviews with Mr. Nazeer Khan and many of his clients, as well as on the author’s field visits to a majority of Mr. Nazeer Khan’s completed and on-going projects. The interviews and field visits took place in 2013 and 2014.[1] Kerala is a state in the south-west region of India.

Abstract

Hammam Al-Ward is an Ottoman monument in Saida. Siada (or Sidon) is a coastal city in Lebanon and a hidden treasure with numerous Mamluk and Ottoman monuments. These monuments are of various types, from mosques to hammams to palaces and khans. They remain unstudied and at times undocumented. This is an architectural monograph of Hammam Al-Ward placed within the urban history of the city and the social practices of its inhabitants. Through documentation and comparative analysis, the paper argues that the hammam was built during the early eighteenth century but carries within it an old tradition of building that dates back to the Mamluk period and an old socio-spatial practice that dates back to Roman times. The article investigates and presents the urban condition that unfolds through the hammam patronage, style and location, the architectural interpretation of the hammam type of the Mediterranean Arab World and the socio-spatial practices of bathing and leisure that continue till modern times.

Abstract

Third place is the interface between work and life and due to the direct connection with urban development. It is a valuable space for attending the community in which one attends voluntarily, informally, and regularly or irregularly. There are such places in urban areas of Iran where people are able to attend in order to do social and religious activities and it seems like that the architectural nature of such spaces has some similarities and differences with the definition of third place. The research question is, “what are the features of third place in pre-modern cities of Iran and are the features in accordance with the definition of third place?”. This is a developmental research conducted via the interpretive-historical method. The findings indicate that third place is commonplace in Iranian Cities and some architecture types like public, religious and residential spaces have fundamental similarities with the definitions of third place In Iranian Historical cities, but there are also some differences due to culture, religion, and climate in each region. Third places have widely exited in most applications and religious relations, rituals, and beliefs which demonstrate that brotherhood and communion have significantly influenced the formation of this place. The main issue in this regard is the firm presence of religion and strong ethnocultural ties which have affected the constituents of third place as components like the constant presence of water, creation of special, simple, and defined spaces, respect to adults and providing special furniture for them, and focusing on geometry and aesthetic proportions.
