Abstract

Lesson Study as a growing interest in the education world has attracted educators, experts, and professionals in the area to make use of it in improving the lessons—it also happens in Indonesia. Originally applied in the teaching of mathematics in Japan, now it turns to be used in other fields, and English is one of them. This paper highlights the guideline on Lesson Study and pictures its application in a private senior high school in Malang, East Java, Indonesia. The adaptation of Lesson Study is interesting since Japan and Indonesia have different cultural background. How Lesson Study is usually implemented in Japan and the US and how it is applied in Indonesia will be seen here. As this is a case study, it will only focus on a school and the result should not be used to generalize Lesson Study applications in Indonesia. Interview and observation were instruments used in this study. The interview was used to gain information on how Lesson Study was normally conducted and observation (and the researchers’ involvements) was used to see the real implementation of Lesson Study. What happened during the implementation of Lesson Study and during the teaching and learning process become a great attention here.

Abstract

The effectiveness of using storybooks during read-alouds to develop children’s comprehension skills as well as in understanding the story has been widely studied. The reading aloud strategy has also been proven through numerous researches to be the most highly recommended activity for encouraging language and literacy. The study identified the comprehension strategies used by the teachers during their read-aloud sessions, matched teachers’ current practices using the comprehension strategies to the identified practices for the approach, and obtained the teachers’ perceptions of their current practices of the comprehension strategies during reading aloud in their English language classrooms. The teachers’ comprehension strategies were matched with a research-based strategy for comprehending texts during read-alouds proposed by Whitehurst et al (1994). Three primary school English language teachers teaching in the rural schools participated in this study. Qualitative research methods were used in this study. Primary data was obtained through observations using an observation protocol; while secondary data was obtained through interviews from teachers. Findings from the study revealed that the three teachers employed a few of the comprehension strategies that were proposed by researchers in the field. The findings also indicate that the teachers utilized only the strategies that they thought were relevant to their teaching context and as such, proposed the need to provide teachers with knowledge on the best practices for conducting reading aloud to develop ESL students’ comprehension skills

Abstract

Comparing to other states, quality of education in Indonesia including Islamic education has not shown significant progress. It can be verified from the report of PERC, World Bank, and data from UNDP. It is a regret to find the decrease of our education quality. It occurs because supervision of education is done in conventional manner, rigid, and formality limited. Moreover, it may also because instructional activities have not been optimal yet and management of education institution which is less professional. In order to solve the problem, some solutions are offered. One of them is that the implementation of supervision has to be done optimally, procedurally, and professionally. In this case, supervision takes its role as, (1) academic supervision: teacher partner, innovator, and pioneer, instructional and education consultant, teachers counselor, and motivator, (2) managerial supervision: concept drafter, programmer, composer, reporter, and builder. Furthermore, manager (headmaster) has to be able to concentrate and supervise the effort to have a good input through very good process to produce excellent output: moderate input through excellent process produces very good output; and the lower input through a very excellent process resulting better output.
