Abstract

This study began with an assumption that multicultural education model is practiced in schools in a very limited scope. Therefore, through the subject of PPKN (Civics Education) in schools, multicultural education can be developed. In addition, the school as a laboratory of diversity at the scope of educational institutions is an important medium in the discourse of multicultural education. As a conceptual formulation that was built through the 2013curriculum, the instructional model of Civics education-based on multiculturalism was found to be able to stimulate students’ character building in a more effective, quick and strategic manner. The school, in addition to being an important laboratory of diversity, should also provide multicultural instruction in Civics education with the materials that aid the vision of Civics education instruction with a content of multicultural education in a productive, creative, innovative, and affective way as well as having an effect on the students so as to contribute to the social, civic life and more importantly to the process of building the character and attitude of tolerance among students in schools. Through multicultural education in schools, students learn to accept and understand the cultural differences that affect the differences in usage (how people behave); folkways (habits in the community), mores (code of conduct in the community), and customs (tradition of a community). With multicultural education, learners will be able to accept differences, criticism, and have a sense of empathy, tolerance for others regardless of class, status, gender, ehnic, religion and academic skills.

Abstract

Inter-religious relations in the period of Prophet Muhammad were running in harmony. Although there were theological differences between some religious faiths, these differences do not detract good relations. One of the written evidence of the condition of inter-religious harmony in this period was the agreement to live in peace as outlined in a treaty to respect and protect. The Madina Charter is proof that Prophet Muhammad was a religious leader as well as a political leader. The Madina Charter was born ahead of its time and can be used as a source of inspiration for building a plural society. Through the Medina Charter, the Prophet successfully organized all ethnic and religious groups in Medina, uniting them as brothers, despite different religious and ethnic backgrounds, all having the same duty to defend the State of Medina should there be an attack from outside. As a work which is based on literature research project, this article shows that the discussion of inter-religious relations in the period of Prophet Muhammad were not only supported by the works of schoolars in the fields of history and other related fields but also by the religiously based texts.

Abstract

This work is based on the assumption that modern human has undergone a multidimensional crisis. This crisis needs a timely response and an urgent solution, for if we neglect it, it will become worse and can destabilize the life of mankind globally. I refer to the work of Huston Smith on perennial philosophy to find its essence as an attempt to find solution for overcoming the modern men`s crisis. This is a library research using the philosophical hermeneutics method. The paper shows that, firstly, perennial philosophy has a characteristic of metaphysics, which try to find a fundamental basis for both immanent and transcendent of all things, psychology which depicts the common sameness in human and ethics as a goal in human life. Secondly, what is meant by human spiritual crisis is a condition where human neglected even destroyed the godhead character within themselves. Thirdly, the answer made by Huston smith`s Perennial Philosophy concerning human spiritual crisis include that the spiritual crisis of modern human being are seen from the tunnel metaphore, in which the basement is scientism, the left wall is education, media as the roof, and the right wall the law. The spiritual crisis of modern human being as a failure of post-modernism has a similiraty with modernism way of seeing this world as the only true reality, although there is different in approach between the two. Religious mysticism that was offered by Huston smith has a perenialistic tone. The pluralistic attitude found among humankind has to be rooted in an esoteric level within each religion. Smith`s perennial philosophy is very relevant to the condition of Indonesia, which therefore has sackeled by a rigid theological dogmatism. Religion should be an endeavor for human being to find a more exalted living.

Abstract

As the world is increasingly globalized, culture and human thought are developing in a different way because it is shaped by culture and climate of the local environment. In the West, in particular, Muslims confront the issues currently generated by the culture and philosophy of Western civilization which is very different in terms of the frame of thought. Therefore, to be adapted to the Western/European environment and so Islam will be able to grow, the modification of the format without changing the original teachings of Islam are highly required. Even this method is very suitable based on dynamic Islam. Tariq Ramadan, indeed, is seen as a prominent Muslim thinker who attempt to explore the historical tradition of Islam, or the Prophet’s biography, to be applied to the western/European tradition whose typical civilization might prevent Islam from flourishing if global Islamic values are not applied to the current world. In other words, if the same methods are used as practiced in the Islamic tradition in the East, the possibility is that Islam will not thrive in the West. In his book, In the Footsteps of the Prophet: Lessons from the Life of Muhammad, he clearly shows how the biography of the Prophet is extracted of the essence of teaching to be used as a catalyst in a new life or to be adjusted to the context of the current globalized world.

Mujiburrahman, Alfisyah, Ahmad Syadzali. 2015. Badingsanak Banjar-Dayak: Identitas Agama dan  Ekonomi Etnisitas di Kalimantan Selatan. Yogyakarta: CRCS-UGMThe Dayak-Banjar relationship is tied up by the myth of the origins of the kinship (Badingsanak) between the Sandayuhan (origins of the Meratus Dayak people) and Bambang Basiwara (origins of the Banjar), but in its development, this issue attracted the attention of some researchers to uncover the beginning of the relationship between these two ethnic groups. This is described by Mujiburrahman, et al., in the book Badingsanak Banjar-Dayak: Religious Identity and Ethnic Economy in South Kalimantan. According to Alfani Daud (1997: 1-4) as quoted by Mujiburrahman et al., In light of the great similarities between the Banjar and Malay languages, it is possible that the Banjar ancestors were descendants of the ethnic Malay who, in the past thousands of years, immigrated from Sumatra and the surrounding areas in this region. He assumed that Meratus were descendants of earlier Malay immigrants, who were driven away by later Malay immigrants. The latter then became the core group of the Banjar.

Abstract

This article examines student social movements with a focus of student activities in extra-campus organizations, especially the Islamic Students Association (HMI) and the Indonesian Christian Students’ Movement (GMKI) at the campus of the Pattimura University, State College of Islamic Studies Of Ambon and the State College of Protestant Christian Studies Ambon, which aims to describe forms of student social movements in responding to social issues and development in the city of Ambon and Maluku after the conflict. The data of this study were collected using a qualitative method approach through observation, interviews and document study. Therefore, this study is qualitative, the data were analyzed qualitatively and presented descriptively. This study found that first, cadres or members of HMI and GMKI always strive to master public spaces on campus through the distribution of their cadres to occupy strategic positions in the executive bodies or the student senate, even the seniors who have become lecturers in structural positions on campus, which in turn can affect campus policies. Second, the activities in the movement of HMI and GMKI have similarities in terms of responding to social issues, by paying attention to a few aspects including socio-religious issues, local political issues and post-conflict community development.

Yogyakarta: Religious and Cross-cultural Studies (CRCS) Graduate School, Gadjah Mada University YogyakartaBali, a beautiful island well known all over the world, fascinates many visitors from various countries and has a religious identity as its nickname reflects, the Island of the Gods. Although famous as a Hindu land, Bali has an Islamic Village, where Muslims can live side by side with Balinese Hindus. In view of the events of the Bali Bombing, in 2002 in Kuta and 2005 in Jimbaran, of course, there have been social and religious tensions between these two faiths. The tragedy has indeed left a change of attitude that is a strengthening of political identity of the Balinese-ness. This situation is presented in a book entitled, Bulan Sabit di Pulau Dewata, Jejak Kampung Islam Kusamba-Bali (Crescent on the Island of Gods, Traces of Islamic Village in Kusamba-Bali).

Abstract

This article was motivated by recent development in Indonesian society whose religious and cultural diversity has raised a lot of racial issues that lead to tension and suspicion among communities in the Sungai Penuh, Kerinci Regency, Jambi province on Sumatra Island. The impact could potentially trigger conflict, damage, inconvenience and could further threaten national unity and national integration. This article gives an overview that religion (Islam) has a very positive philosophy that in fact humans are created in religious and cultural diversity. Diversity is the law of God, something that is commonplace, rule of time, a must, and divine grace to be grateful for, a form generosity from God to humans as the strength, the reason to do good. The government together with the community has been able to build harmony in diversity, creating peace, moderation, compassion, love of peace, tolerance, avoiding conflict, so as to build the country as planned. In socializing the attitude of harmony, the government can do it through formal and non-formal ways, eventually people can implement it in their daily lives. Thus, the government and the public can establish harmony in diversity, creating peace, security, order, justice, tranquility, comfort as well as brotherhood and compassion. The government together with the community can come together, foster mutual cooperation to achieve the goals the country’s development. This paper also recommends to religious communities with diverse cultures to always build harmony as one of the solutions in creating peace and free from conflict, as well as serving as capital to build the country, nation, state and religion.

Abstract

The aim of this article is to discuss the use and usefulness of psychological theory and psychological methods in the study of religious violence. My analysis of previous research revealed an imbalance between data, method and theory. There are few psychological studies on religious terrorism based on first-hand empirical data. The analysis also showed that psychological explanations of religious terrorism are, in general, not sensitive to cultural factors. Religious terrorism is a culturally constituted phenomenon. It is therefore important that research on religious violence is based on theoretical and empirical approaches sensitive to the cultural construction of violence. This means that psychologists of religion must be willing to use novel and creative methods sensitive to the unique cultural context where the violent behaviour is acted out and interpreted by the actors of the violent drama, for example, discourse analysis or narrative research. In the self-corrective and growth-inducing feedback process between these methods and primary data it would be possible to develop valid psychological explanations of religious violence.

Abstract

The dynamics of peace in Ambon have been getting stronger during the last ten years, but to what extent this phenomenon can be considered as a solid basis for peace, would require a critical analysis. This paper is the result of field research on peace in Ambon using the theory of "peace architecture" developed by Luc Reychland (2006). The results of the analysis obtained several important conclusions. First, the peace process in the city of Ambon has been going on in a participatory manner in various aspects of life. Second, in an architectural perspective as put forward by Reychland, the peace in Ambon has sufficient potential to develop into a structure of peace which is getting stronger. It is characterized by the strengthening of an increasingly inclusive dialog and communication between citizens, as well as the effectiveness of public arenas such as markets, offices, schools and coffee shops as a medium of integration. It is also supported by the accommodative practices of economic and political transformation. Third, in line with the positive development, the public still need to be reminded of radical religious ideas and identity politics that are harmful to the sustainability of peace.
