Abstract

This paper would like to map the religious response in a post-disaster community. In an academic discourse, a post-disaster community is one with abnormal conditions, including how it defines aspects of Divinity in their religious perspective. Thus, the complexity of issues that encompass a disaster-hit community will shape the worldview, perspective, and the understanding of the relationship between human, God, nature, and religion, serves as the basic assumption of this research. So, there are several points that will be introduced in this paper including: first, the disaster typology from the perspective of the experts; second, the debate between the divine law and the law of nature in the context of disaster; and third, the religious response of the disaster-hit community over the history of the events of disaster. The research shows some important findings including the emergence of various forms of response about the events of disaster and their relation to human, God, nature, and religion itself. Since the concepts of disaster appear from a post-disaster society, on one side also require relationship which is able not only to respond to disasters but also to provide constructive solutions to the survival of the post-disaster community. Therefore, the stronger the religious normative doctrine of a person, the more difficult to bring closer to the context his survival not to mention life improvement. Nevertheless, in the majority of other communities that culturally experienced two sides of mass dilemma i.e. the theological concept of submission, patience, and gratitude in the religious worldview of post-disaster community as the disaster not only happened to a person but also to many people.

Abstract

Inspired by the book of Michael Mann about the dark side of democracy that discusses the paradox between the ideality of democratic values and empirical realities of violence in the name of freedom (democracy), this paper begins with the exposure of the paradox, such as the rise of the violent conflict between groups of people (both ethnic and religious-based) and the high prevalence of violence between religious groups in Indonesia. Even worse, a very wrenching violence involves state actors (rulers). This paper tries to understand the roots of the paradox, with a look at how the relationship between state and religion and the religious community trend of Indonesia (especially Muslims). The author argues that the democratization of religion is a solution to the issues. To answer what kind of religious democracy lives in Indonesia, the author analyzes through a religious procedural (or constitutional) democratic dimension and religious substantial democratic dimension. The phenomenon of disobedience of law and system and the euphoria of law-making that reflects “intolerance” in several places in Indonesia display the fundamental issue in the religious procedural democracy. Whereas in the context of religious substantial democracy, the prevailing trend of religion that serves as a political and economic vehicle and ignores religion as a substantial aspect of the behavior of the Indonesian society has resulted in the marginalization of religious position and function. Then, the infiltration of the model of political Islam has also led to alienation of the character of the Islamic society of Indonesia, from a democratic pattern to a revival (radical) one. In this light, the author needs to present a strategy to encourage religious democracy in Indonesia, structurally through formulating the ideal relation model between state and religion and culturally through a substantial pattern of religion embedded with the character of Indonesian religious communities as well as the need to revitalize the true Indonesian Islamic model which will be intrinsically familiar with the principles of democracy. Key words: Democracy, religious procedural, substantial democracy, intolerance, law and system of disobedience.

Abstract

Among various religious groups in Indonesia is Orang Maiyah (Gathering Community) that has become a unique phenomenon. Cak Nun (Emha Ainun Najib) is the central figure in the community as well as the source of knowledge and inspiration for its members (although in so many occasion Cak Nun refuses to be called so). This paper explores the style of social Sufism teachings attached to the community approached by descriptive qualitative analysis. This work shows that Orang Maiyah, which is spread in various regions of Indonesia, has become a religiously motivated movement that brings people together to achieve a "sovereigned human" state of life. Cak Nun is not a sole magnet that lures the community members. The members of the community have a freedom to choose the paths of truth according to their own conscience through dialogue, discussion. They also exchange information from various sources provided by the Maiyah activities.

Abstract

The plurality of the society in West Kalimantan has been formed since the earliest days of the appearance of Islamic style kingdoms or sultanates. However, in its development in the last few decades, the plurality has created social conflicts, especially among Muslims themselves. By using the perspective of normative teachings of Islam and the historicity of its congregants, this paper aims to present the argument that plurality is a thing that must be accepted by anyone as an inevitability. Keywords: Plurality of society, Malay, Dayak.

Abstract

As for religion, internet has become a very important aspect in people’s everyday live, especially for those who seek information and further understanding about religion; internet is a way in and out to do so. While in one side internet has been a great help in providing sources and opportunity to learn religion in a new way, it also has a negative potential for the growing numbers of radicalism and religious extremism. Various researches and studies have bought up large data showing that these negative effects of internet bring bad influences to religious believers. Nevertheless, the ability of internet in providing and spreading information are also a way out in bringing back religion to its ideal path, that is to evoke peace and welfare among people. Internet is then used as a field for dakwah (proselytizing) to spread more peaceful as well as relevant information on religion and its related topics. Online dakwah is therefore meant to initiate peace and non-violent ways in understanding and practicing religion in real life. Focused targets for the dakwah are youth as the most active users of internet, as well as government to initiate and implement such policies to keep internet clean from violence and extremism.
