Private and Public schools have contributed immensely to the growth and development of Arabic Language in Nigeria. Even though the method of teaching in the private Arabic school before the advent of the colonialism in Nigeria was informal, Arabic developed to the extent of being used to produce literary works. In the first quarter of the twentieth century, formal private Arabic schools, as well as the public ones, were established in the country. From then, especially after the independent of Nigeria, the situation of Arabic schools is changing for the better. That notwithstanding, these schools are still encountering problems. The aim of this study, therefore, was to examine the current situations of Arabic language and its problem and prospects in Nigerian private and public schools vis a vis its growth and development. The study concluded that while the case of Arabic in Private Schools in Nigeria is perfect, it appears dismal in public schools. It is therefore recommended that the governments’ recognition and support for Arabic schools and programmes and adequate review of Arabic curricula Arabic will attain the greater height in Nigeria.

The results of the study show there are three methods of translation on Google Translate, namely word for word, literal, and free translation methods. There are eight mistakes in translating GT, in terms of the morphology of the translation machine, Google Translate is more likely to expand meaning than the morphological angels themselves, so it is needed for more morphological explanations so that the target language can be achieved.

Abstract

The history of Arabic education in Nigeria is connected to the emergence of Islam which was embraced by Nigerians through the Arab traders. Nigeria as nation, has more than 400 indigenous local languages out of which the most common of the local languages are Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo. Other major languages are Fulfulde, Kanuri, Ibibio, Tiv, Efik and Nupe while English is considered as the country’s official language. As Muslims, it is necessary to acquire Arabic education in order to perform religious obligations such as the five time daily prayer and other basic Arabic knowledge for the in-depth understanding of Islam. It is however pertinent to note at this juncture that Arabic language, in an environment where local languages are predominantly spoken is established in the educational system. The researchers therefore aimed at investigating and examining the influence of the Nigerian local languages on Arabic education using a linguistic approach. Two local languages; Hausa and Yoruba were purposively selected among other local languages for the study, while findings and recommendations were made at the end of this work.
