Abstract

Pottery is a type of traditional craft that has taken root in the history of art and culture of the Indonesian society. This fact is supported by various forms of ancient earthenware crafts which discovered since prehistoric times and the emergence of pottery craft centers in various parts of Indonesia, including in Rendeng Village, Malo District, Bojonegoro Regency. The changing of market needs and tastes today are a common problem faced by the traditional craft industry, including pottery crafts. Local wealth inside the traditional handicraft design which increasingly disappearing is one of the common concerns. The development of this contemporary pottery design aims to revive the skills of pottery craftsmen and the local culture of the Bojonegoro society in a modern design style. The research and development produced three sets of earthenware teapots, namely a turtle-shaped teapot set, a white combination of turtle-shaped teapot and teapot set inspired by Bojonegoro local coffee. Design research uses action research methods which consist of three design cycles. The application of this research method is useful to improve the capabilities and creativity of pottery craftmen in designing craft designs. Each design development cycle has four stages, namely planning, observation, action and reflection. The results of the study show that the color of the local clay Bojonegoro can characterize contemporary designs with a blend of colors and materials. The local way of drinking coffee as an inspiration for ‘kothok’ coffee teapots set has the potential to commercialize products and new experiences in drinking coffee.Key words: teapot, pottery, contemporary, Bojonegoro

Abstract

This research focused on deaf students in the third year of junior high school. When communicating in writing the structure of the grammar of deaf students is often reversed, ironically, they’re expected to pass on national test for normal students. This study uses a participatory design approach because all stakeholders involved in the design process are considered as coworkers in decision making. The designer, teacher and student are the stakeholders involved in this research. The group discussion forum was conducted to understand the types of games that are easy but fun to play for deaf students and to get feedback and recommendations for improvements from the games that have been made. This study produced language learning aids in the form of educational grammar games for third-year deaf students of junior high school. The theme of the grammar game that was appointed was adapted to the practical lessons at Yayasan Karya Dharma Wanita (YKDW), namely cooking and salons. The results of the study were tested in another deaf school which is Pangudi Luhur and the results were obtained that the product could be well received, even though they have different educational approach from YDKW. This study finally concluded that in Indonesia there isn’t standardization regarding the deaf kid’s education system.Key words: product design, language learning tools, deafness

Abstract

Wall shelf is one of furniture that is widely used nowadays. A wall shelf which is designed to utilize the vertical area of the house becomes a favorable choice because of its minimalist and space saving design. The wall shelves design on the market usually has a metal retaining frame. Certain designs use L-brackets support structures, however, some of them do not use it at all. Most L-brackets are made of metal material from industrial mass production. Actually, design of a wall shelf can be made using a wire retaining structure. Wire material can be used as a support structure that is able to withstand loads. This research used experimental method to explore several supporting structure designs of wire material. Manual techniques such as twisting technique, coiling technique, and bending technique were combined to increase strength of the wire. Various exploration results were tested to determine firmest structure with the most efficient material. This article is expected to revive the tradition of craftsmanship and to inspire young designers to be creative in developing wire product design.Key words: wall shelf, structure design, wire design, wire structure
