Abstract

A discourse always has a topic which is included in a proposition. Topic is also about the theme that is being discussed in a discourse or in main idea. This research analyzes the structure of French o line media discourse and communication analysis, with the macro structure, micro structure, and super structure approach. The result shows that based on the macro structure approach, media discourse is divided into 5 element; which are the title, date, source, number of word , and text resume. Macro structure also refers to the theme, topic or main idea of the rubric discourse. Topic unity can be achieved by several ways; referring, ellipsis, pronominalize, repetition, and lexical equivalency. According to the micro structure approach, there are parts of text, such as: word, sentence, phrase, proposition, and image. Micro structure is related with the relation between proposition. The relation that is found from the data is argumentative relation and topicalisation relation; while according to the super structure approach, the discourse is related to the framework and part that is being arranged in the text as a whole.

Abstract

This research aims to: (1) show the ungrammaticality of pre-service teachers’ (Bachelor III students’) written tag-switching models and this is disapproving since these subjects are English teachers-to-be. (2) It also tracks tokens of interference of Kirundi, French, Kiswahili and English languages in the Bachelor III students’ written tag-switching examples as a result of the Burundian multilingual education system. The study refers to the observation and Testing as suggested respectively by Cohen et al. (2006) and Hughes (2003). The researcher’s unstructured observation participated in his review of observational data before suggesting any explanation for the phenomena being observed. The test given helped measure on the one hand those pre-service teachers’ achievements of the course objectives and diagnose their strengths and weaknesses on the other hand. The subjects of the study consisted of thirty-six (36) students whose preference was tag-switching in an Exam of Sociolinguistics with the question framed as follows: “Among the different code switching types, choose one and exemplify it with three examples.” The Kuder- Richardson formula 20 (KR-20) and Standard Error Measure (SEM), provided helpful information when having to take decisions about individuals on the basis of their performance in a test such as the one given during this research, (Hughes, ibid:224). The research findings reveal a mismatching between the subjects’ level of study and the written tag-switching examples that they gave: after correction done diligently and skilfully, ungrammaticality is a case and it includes the subjects’ wrong tense use at the tag level and the occurrence of wrong choice of tenses, aspects and mood (either in Kirundi, French and Kiswahili) in the part before tag level. The cause of these erroneous tag- switching examples is revealed to take source in the multilingual education system operational in Burundi. Abstract

This research examines the learning styles (Fleming, 1987) – visual, auditory, and kinesthetic (VAK) of Aus-tralian teachers in learning bahasa Indonesia (BIPA) at UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang. This research was undertaken to answer the following questions: (1) what kinds of learning styles performed by the Australian teachers in learning bahasa Indonesia at UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang? and (2) what kinds of categories of each learning style mostly reflected by the Australian teachers in learning bahasa Indonesia at UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang? The data were collected by doing short survey, classroom observations, questionnaires, and interviews with both students and teachers (Robson, 2002). The results of the study shows that (1) more participants were kinesthetic learners. Most of them learnt bahasa Indonesia best through a hand – on method, exploring the world around them, and often relying on what they could directly experience or perform; (2) Its categories mostly suited with the participants’ learning style: more time for outside learning, as the participants needed to know more about the language and practice it within its cultural context. Most of them enjoyed very much tasks which involve manipulating materials and objects. Finally, they also liked learning bahasa Indonesia through moving, doing, and touching.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyse the various discourse of French Ministry of Foreign Affairs augmented on its ideology of promoting pluralism in the country, which is strategically marketed through the Ministry’s magazine entitled Label. The social actors representing the ideology of the Ministry raise arguements advancing pluralism as an ideal part of France foreign policy. The discourses evolving from these actors arguments however, emphasized the dicotomic perspective of French centrality towards the others (the Southern countries) as pheriphery. The perspective of pluralism politics and the relationship between central and periphery are the focus of this article. In order to understand the underlying meaning of the arguments, Critical Discourse Analysis is used to illuminate the discourses of these actors. The analysis revealed that the ideal of pluralism although viewed as a good way in trying to position other countries as in oneness as a coherent group is in fact contradictory because it creates a gap or distinction between France considered as central and other countries as in the periphery

Abstract

The push toward language teaching to make learners effective communicators has been relentless. To be proficient language users, learners need to at least practice it inside the classroom to communicate functionally and interactively. Through such a way, they will be accustomed to the language not only from linguistic and structural matters, but also from authentic communicative competence. Willingness to Communicate (WTC), hence, is a crucial plus point for learners to succeed their L2 acquisition. This present study which was held in EFL context aimed to: (1) examine the Indonesian students’ level of WTC in English, and (2) reveal the potential factors which influence students’ WTC in English. A total 136 undergraduate students from three different majors (Medicine, Accounting, Elementary School Teacher Education) participated in this study. The data were gathered through a survey and a semi-structured interview. It was indicated that 197 out of 136 students (72.1%) had low Willingness to Communicate in English. Besides, it was disclosed that there were four most discouraging factors affecting students’ WTC, namely language anxiety, task-type, teachers’ and students’ rapport, and class size. Abstract

Teaching-learning result of Translation 1 of second semester students is not satisfying. It can be seen from the students’ average score that is under 2,5; the percentage of students’ attendance is 93%, while the lecturer’s presence has been 100%. Therefore, new model of teaching-learning activity for this subject is needed to increase the quality of the teaching-learning activity. The new model applied for this study is group-to-group exchange. The object of the research is the students who take Translation 1 class in 2008. The object is divided into 2 groups. Group 1 is given treatment by applying group-to-group exchange model and group 2 as the control is treated by delivering speech model. The Indicators are lecturer's activity, students' activity, and students' academic achievement. The result of the research shows that (1) lecturer's activity is increased by producing more papers with new references (50% in the mid of the research and 75% at the end of the research); (2) at the end of the research students' activity is increased by asking more questions ( 10 x if it is compared with the control), answering questions (6x compared with control), and presentation (4x compared with the control); (3) the creativity is increased by producing papers (10 x compared with the control); and (4) the class average score is increased (2,9 compared with 2,4) and students's percentage with the score of > 2,5(41 compared with 39).
