Abstract

Physics education emphasizes students' ability to represent a problem and then choose alternative solutions from various perspectives. However, teachers still very rarely use this ability as the focus of assessment. The purpose of this study is to describe the results of an assessment of the ability to represent multiple physics in each of its components. This is survey research that takes a quantitative approach. This study's sample included 287 high school students from Yogyakartam using cluster sampling. The instrument used is a physics multiple representation ability test that has been tested for validity, reliability, and item quality using IRT 1 PL analysis. According to the measurement results, physics high school students' dual representation ability in all aspects, namely mathematical representation, graphic representation, image representation, and verbal representation, is in the low category. However, according to the four existing components, the mathematical component is the highest and the verbal component is the lowest. So this finding can be a reference for teachers in improving the quality of physics teaching.

Abstract

The absence of research that examines traditional "horog-horog" foods based on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), is an interesting discussion to study. The purpose of this study is to analyze STEM in the process of making "horog-horog". In addition, the process is connected basic competencies in learning. A qualitative approach was used in this study through Ethno STEM analysis. Observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation of the horog-horog manufacturing process were used to collect data. The data that has been obtained are analyzed and categorized into STEM and appropriate basic competencies. The results of this study show that there are 1) in the process of making horog-horog there are aspects of science (separation of substances, density, capillarity, simple machine, heat, plant classification, and substance content), technology (tools in the manufacturing process), engineering (screening, drying, scraping, steaming, and printing), and mathematics (predicting the dosage of materials, making process, and profit from sales results) and 2) local knowledge/skills are in accordance with basic competencies in high school. With these findings, the process of making horog-horog can be used as a learning resource. In addition, this method also includes efforts to preserve the heritage of ancestors.

Abstract

Observing skills is the first step, and questioning is the second step of the scientific approach. Students ask questions based on their observations. This study aims to determine whether there is a relationship between observing and questioning skills. The population is students of Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Teacher Education who take science courses. The sample consisted of 11 people who were taken randomly. Collecting data on the topic of food digestion, the lecturer displayed a picture of several chickens eating in a cage and around it, there were lots of grass scattered. Students observe pictures and write down their observations, and are asked to write questions. On ecology, the lecturer gave two pictures of tropical forests and newly planted teak forests. Students are asked to observe pictures and are assigned to write questions. On the topic of the respiratory system, the lecturer gave a picture of a family exercising. Below the picture, the heart rate increases during exercise. Data analysis was carried out on the scores of observations and student questions with the Kolmogorov-Smirnov normality test followed by the linearity test. The results were confirmed by a scatter plot and Pearson's product-moment correlation test using SPSS version 16. The results showed a relationship between observing skills on ecological material. There was no relationship between the two skills on the topic of food digestion and the respiratory system.

Abstract

Impulse and momentum mobile app can be another alternative to overcome the problem of using printed teaching materials. Impulse and momentum mobile app present concepts accompanied by examples in everyday life in images, animations, and videos. It can reduce students' difficulties in connecting concepts or materials with phenomena. The difficulties experienced by these students can have an impact negative on students' understanding of physics concepts. The impulse and momentum mobile app shows valid results with an average value of 3.32. Comments and suggestions from the validator are considered as revision material so that impulse and momentum multimedia teaching materials in mobile applications are better, more attractive, worthy of being tested for effectiveness. The mobile app needs to be revised based on comments and suggestions given by physics lecturers and teachers. The improvement of students' understanding of physics concepts is shown by testing the effectiveness of multimedia teaching materials in the experimental class and class control. In the analysis of the different tests with t-test, which involved 70 student respondents, the value of t count is 19.587 with t table of 1.99. P-value is p = 0.000, where the P-value is smaller than 0.05. It can be concluded that there is a significant difference in post-test value data on the ability to understand concepts between the experimental class and the control class. These results indicate that impulse and momentum mobile app effectively improves the ability to understand concepts of student physics.

Abstract

The study was conducted intentionally to develop, evaluate, and do small-scale implementation of vodcast on thermodynamics as supplementary material. The study employed Research & Development framework of ADDIE model which includes the stages: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The sample size involved 12 in-service teachers who made the evaluation and 24 students in an online class during pandemic as the implementation part. The subsequent iterations produced significantly improved vodcast output, which was ultimately divided into three parts and made available to students via an unlisted YouTube account as the implementation platform. Teacher evaluations earned an overall score of 3.98, which is satisfactory, with an average grade of 4.36 (very satisfactory) for content, 3.65 (satisfactory) for delivery, and 3.94 (satisfactory) for technical production. All descriptive comments were accommodated into the final version of the vodcast and the Department of Education-approved required module was supplemented with the vodcast by volunteer respondents who participated in the online implementation. The enactment yielded an average pretest percentage of 40.833% and post-test percentage of 73.467% that correspond to a normalized gain of <g> = 0.55 that is a medium gain. Reflection of in-service teachers revealed that the vodcast can be a stand-alone material in learning thermodynamics. As conclusion, using properly calibrated vodcasts can efficiently augment learning in difficult physics courses. It is recommended that vodcast be made on other topics in order to come up with an archive of readily-implementable vodcast in physics as well as other science subjects for a very effective STEM learning.
