Abstract

AbstractMost of young people are enthusiasticin having the most recent mobile gadgets just to boast among their peers. They likely utilize them to make phone calls, take pictures, listen to songs, watch videos, or surf the internet access for learning or just entertainment. In a technologically advanced country like Indonesia, the third and fourth generation (3G, 4G) mobile devices are available at affordable prices, and people of all streams find it necessary to own a mobile gadget for connecting and communicating.  Moreover, it has become a common trend among undergraduates to carry a mobile gadget to the classroom as well.In this paper, the researcher emphasize the potential of mobile gadgets as a learning tool for students and have incorporated them into the learning environment.The present study examines the application of mobile gadgetin EFL learning and investigates the perceptions of EFL students about mobile gadget in learning activity.  A field study was conducted on thirty undergraduatestudents majoring in accounting study Serang Raya University.  The methodology of data collection included a self-report for students and teachers’ and students’ questionnaire. Findings of the research are significant for EFL teachers and researchers for introducing innovative methods and helpful materials for the English classroom.Keywords: Mobile gadget, students’ perception, teachers’ perception..

Abstract

ABSTRACT The objective of this research is to give understanding and clear explanation about teaching students’ listening skill by English video. Commonly, teaching listening through tape recorder, but in this research teacher shows different way, video is collaboration between pictures and sound components, and it contains a recording of a movie or television program. Students can be able to know the activity or a topic being discussion through visual aid and knowing the pictures expression clearly, this way can help students to get clear information both pronunciations and expression. Grade VIII of SMPN 15 Tangerang with total number is 20 students and 10 English teachersas the subject of the research.  Qualitative descriptive method is applied in this research to explain teaching process through video clearly, however, literature and questionnaere with close answer form is given to get the data. The result of this research are: firstly, teaching listening skill through video can be used by the teacher to make a listening class is more enjoyable and understandable, because audio visual aid can cover students various learning style, finally at the end of teaching and listening process the objectives of study can be gained. Secondly; teaching listening through video is very useful way to encourage and foster students’ listening skill and their interest.      Keywords: Using Video, Listening skill, teaching listening

Abstract

AbstractThe main objective of this study was to see whether preparation influences the learners’ reading comprehension of TOEFL? Also as a subsidiary question, this study tried to find answer(s) to the following question: Does getting a high score imply enhancement in the reading comprehension ability? To this end, sixty EFL learners were selected to take part in a preparation program in which they were instructed different techniques and strategies to deal withthe reading section of TOEFL tests. Although the participants' scores enhanced in the post tests. Generally, findings showed that the preparation effect was more visible on performance of the TOEFL reading test. Abstract

The aims of this research is to understand the responsibility of Mickey Haller as a lawyer. By using descriptive qualitative method, the writer will describes all things in the movie itself. The data were collected from some sources, such as books in library of Senayan ,Library of STIBA Nusa Mandiri, Google books and Website. The writer found the result of analysis about an interesting character from Mickey Haller as main character. Mickey Haller is a lawyer with high responsibility in his work. It makes him never give up on solving the case at hand. Mickey Haller is known as a lawyer who can acquit his clients from criminal penalties although most of his clients are criminal such bikers, con artist, drunk drivers, and drug dealers. Besides Mickey Haller was responsible for the work, he is also responsible for the safety of his family. He protects his children and ex-wife of the evil people who do not like him. In this movie, Mickey Haller is also a person loyal to good friends and work together.Keywords: Responsibility, main character, THE LINCLON LAWYER movie.

Abstract

Abstract The research was conducted to investigate the learners’ confidence towards their speaking skill in English Club in LIA Pramuka, East Jakarta for 2 months focused on perceptions of learners about their confidence in speaking English. The participants involved were 3 participants of English Club members, who were representative about the issue that possessed self-confidence problem. The researcher used questionnaire, interview, observation and documents to collect the data. After experiencing their speaking practice there, the researcher investigated about some perceptions toward speaking activities. The results of this study showed that they could raise their motivation and confidence to speak English since many vocabularies were acquired as they faced listening activity firstly. Besides, they had no anxiety in expressing their ideas anymore although they felt lack of speaking ability. The last, they got new friends there to share many life experiences as it can raise their confidence to express with. Keywords: Speaking, Self-Confidence-English Club

Abstract

This paper explains why learner autonomy is taken into account in language learning where English is a foreign language for the learners particularly in Indonesia. The definition of learner autonomy and its advantages to language learner in EFL contexts will be described within this paper. Many scholars from psychological education and English teaching and learning had proved that language learning can be improved by certain strategy. They revealed the correlation between the autonomous learning with students’ success in learning with different aspect. The definition of autonomy is similar to many different words such as self-regulated and self-determined. Finally, the writer suggests how teacher can promote the autonomous learning atmosphere in the classroom.Keywords: strategy, promoting autonomy, EFL context, Indonesia

Abstract

Abstract The issue of women's discrimination in the Middle East has become common knowledge. Injustice treatment of women in Middle Eastern countries occurs because of the patriarchal culture that still surrounds by most of society. The problem has been raised in various media, one of which is literary media. Through the novel entitled Women at PointZero by Nawal El Saadawi raises the reality of women discrimination experienced by most Middle Eastern women, especially in Egypt. Therefore, this research seeks to reveal the issue of discrimination of women raised by authors in the novel. Descriptive research method of analysis by using the approach Pierre Bourdieu related habitus, arena, capital and social practices used to reveal the factors that cause discrimination against female character in the novel. The end result of the study shows the social practice of Firdaus in countering the discrimination of women in Egypt against male patriarchal dominance in social space of society. Key words: Discrimination of women in Egypt, habitus, arena, capital, social practice

Abstract

Abstract This study aimed to investigate differences and similarities of English and Turkish verbal inflection. It was limited on verbal inflection of the three common tenses which are present, past, and future. The data used in this study were gained from both library and field research. The field research conducted was interview to two informants having background as Turkish teachers and one informant as a learner studying Turkish. The result showed that English and Turkish verbal inflections had differences and similarities. The difference was English verbal inflections were occured in Simple Present Tense and Simple Past while Turkish verbal inflections were occured in the three tenses present which is called by Şimdiki Zaman, past which is called by Geçmiş Zaman, and future which is called by Gelecek Zaman. The other difference was on the affixes used to transform the inflection. Turkish had more affixes than English. Whereas, the similarity appeared on the rules in which the process of affix inflection depends on the subjects used. This similarity was only occured on Simple Present Tense in English in which the inflected verb refered to the subject (the third singular person). Keywords: Verbal inflection, English, Turkish, Contrastive analysis

Abstract

AbstractWriting is one of skills that has to be mastered by students because by writing the writers can express ideas and thought into a good written. In SMA/MA, students often get difficulties in rewriting or paraphrasing the news item that they have read by using their own words. This matter is caused of student’s lack of vocabulary, structure, relating sentence to other sentences, also that they do not understand about the elements of the paragraph that builds a text, and they do not understand a generic structure of news item text. This research took the population of the tenth grade students of MAs Daarul Hikmah Tangerang by using cluster sampling. There are 4 (nine) classes of the tenth grade. Total population is 140 students. One of the classes was the sample. After analyzing the data, the researcher got the result of the students writing ability in paraphrasing news item on the tenth grade was Fair (50.86). There is no student got excellent category, 3 students got good (8.57) category, 20 students got fair (57.14) category, and 12 students got poor (34.29) category.Key word : Writing Ability, News Item, Text
