Abstract

Although Indonesian migrant workers in Saudi Arabia, particularly at informal sectors, have exponentially increased in last decades, most of the time,  they have also faced several constraints such as the lack of protection that supposedly addressed by the Government of Indonesia (GoI) through Indonesian embassy, limited numbers of regulations that could protect the Indonesian migrant workers from the Government of Saudi Arabia, due to the absence of Memorandum of Understanding between the two countries. Such complex circumstances made the position of Indonesian migrant workers worsened due to their disability in gaining their rights. In the implementation process, the GoI’s protection has not been maximal in ensuring the safety of their workers abroad. The situation reached the peak when the death penalty for Ruyati binti Satubi was conducted by Government of Saudi Arabia without any initiatives informing Indonesian authority prior to the execution. Consequently the former President of Indonesia, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, declared a moratorium policy during the cabinet meeting on June 23, 2011, in order to improve the protection mechanism of Indonesian migrant domestic workers. In milieu of this issue, the researchers attempted at analyzing the impacts of such a policy. The analysis was based on national interest theory. In the context of Indonesian migrant domestic workers, this study came to argue that the moratorium policy could be seen as a manifestation of political commitment from Indonesia’s government perceiving the protection of Indonesian migrant workers is high in the list.

Abstract

This article explores religious terrorism, a concept that has received a lot of attention from academics and the international community. It briefly looks at the definitions of terrorism and religious terrorism, in order to give clarity to the rest of the article. The article presents two sides of a debate. One side is that religious terrorism is in fact a unique and separate phenomenon. The other side is that “religious terrorism” is not fundamentally different from terrorism, and rather is a misrepresentative term made up by academics in the West in order to further their political agenda... The authors argue that even if some people to justify violent acts use religion, nevertheless the basic tenets of most religions are peace and tolerance. Religion has the potential to prevent, mediate, and resolve conflict, as well as heal and reconcile after violence has occurred. In order to counter terrorism, religious leaders need to work tirelessly around the world to uphold the peaceful aspects of religion.

Abstract

The issue of femininity and masculinity has long been a source of controversy, specifically when tied to positions of power, rights and obligations. Many will argue that masculinity dominates those positions of power, one of them being the military. It is an undeniable fact that the number of women soldiers is far below men soldiers. This is almost a universal trend. Using Joshua S. Goldstein’s third hypothesis of “tough men and tender women”, this research attempts to analyze the cultural construction of gender in the military that is present in four war movies dating back from 1957 to a more current one of 2008. The result of this research shows that although there has been a shift in what is considered as acceptable for masculinity, femininity still cannot escape its stereotype.

Abstract

This study examines about China beauty market associated with beauty perception in their society. The beautiful perception in China differs from time to time, most contradictory to the Mao era; beautiful women are women who did not do self-beautification, while post-Mao era, in line with the opening of the economy, beautiful women associated with white skin, young, and tall. To meet these criteria, women do beauty treatments and buy cosmetics so the demand for cosmetics becomes high. This behavior encourages the rise of cosmetic trading activities in China, so China has become one of the largest beauty market on global scale continues to grow. The rapid growth of the market in China cannot be separated from the Chinese beauty perception of women. Such perception ultimately oppresses women through demands to fulfill the beauty perception that exists in society. Later, beauty perception actually provides a great benefit for beauty companies in China.  Keywords: Beauty, Market, Women, China, Oppression

Abstract

Liberalization of higher education often gets rejection from the people in developing countries. It is considered as part of commodification of education. This also happens in Indonesia. This paper attempts to answer the question why liberalization of higher education in Indonesia cannot run fast? There are three things to be explained. First, it explains the conditions of international political structure that affects Indonesia’s education policy. Second, it elaborates how the process of making and implementing the policy are carried on. Third, it discusses how the public responses the policy. This research shows that liberalization of higher education in Indonesia has given rise to many opposition movements, which then lead to ambiguities in Indonesia commitments to liberalize the higher education. Keywords: GATS, Liberalization, Higher Education, WTO, Globalization

Abstract

Global economic inequality, namely the economic inequality between various countries and regions, is one of the biggest challenges of 21st century. Thus, it has also become an important issue in economic security. It creates extreme poverty in the face of abundant living in several rich countries and regions. It is also the root of other global problems, such as human trafficking, spreads of slums, diseases, and international network of radicalism, extremism and terrorism. Because of the global scope, the world needs to develop new perspective in combating global economic inequality and its negative consequences. Eco-social market economy, which is developed from the German social theories, can offer such perspective. It balances between two important areas of social life, namely social justice on the one hand, and ecological awareness of the other hand. This paper elaborates the basic notions and implementations of eco-social market economy in global level to overcome the issue of global economic inequality in 21st century as a new perspective in addressing the issue of economic insecurity in our current global economic, political and security interactions.
