Abstract

Language is a set of rules used by human as a tool of their communication. The use of the language is governed by the conventional rules. Otherwise, they cannot use it effectively for the sake of their communication. They cannot communicate well. Even worst, they cannot understand each other. Therefore, in order to be successful to join a communicative interaction, the members of a speech community must use their language according to the conventional rules they share among themselves1. English as an international language plays important role in every side of the world. Therefore, we have to competent in English to get the achievement in the world competition that needed a loyal.

Abstract

This study aims to discover category of speech function used by a beauty influencer “Hanum Mega’s Promotional Caption in Instagram.  This study refers to Halliday’s Approach as the framework to explain category of speech function coded in instagram caption. This study uses qualitative method. The result shows that Hanum Mega as a beauty influencer dominantly used statement to promote the product.  In small number, Hanum mega also used command and offer in promotional caption. Statement as the dominant type of speech function coded in Hanum Mega’s promotional caption, it also shows that she uses descriptive features to attract her followers buy the products.

Abstract

In essence evaluation is a process. Therefore the implementation of the evaluation of learning includes several stages. In general, the learning evaluation stage consists of 4 stages, namely (1) the preparation stage, (2) the implementation stage, (3) the processing stage of the results, and (4) the follow-up phase. The position of evaluation in the learning process is as the final part of a series of three basic components of the implementation of learning, namely learning objectives, learning activities, and evaluation process and learning outcomes. In practice, evaluation should be realized based on principles that emphasize the importance of the following evaluations: (1) identification of evaluation objectives; (2) select evaluation techniques in relation to those objectives; (3) use evaluation techniques; (4) be aware of technical limitations Evaluation, and (5) consider evaluation as a process of obtaining information to be used as a basis for determining student learning progress. Based on the explanation can be stated that the evaluation is a series of efforts undertaken to obtain information from students / students systematically arranged and based on instructional goals which then used for decision making in education.

Abstract

This study was aimed at Integration of Character Education in Translation Learning At University Of Quality Berastagi. Everyone in general is never separated from education. Where through education human beings will get their true identity with every knowledge they get as long as they carry out education themselves. With the existence of character education that has a function to form each individual has a good character that is embedded in themselves from the beginning to lead to a better life so that he is beneficial to themselves and others in their environment. Self translation or often called Translation is a compulsory subject brought by students of English study programs. This eye is also inseparable from learning about anthropology, sociology, economics that is closely related to human life itself. Learning translation itself does not only focus on translating a language into another language, but also focuses on how we convey information from the source language to the target language without having to offend or misinterpret a particular party.

Abstract

This research was aimed to know the comparison between using English grammar book and using Internet as a media on the students’ ability in mastering past participle at MTs N 2 Medan. The population of this research was the second year students of MTs N 2 Medan. The population consists of ten classes and the total number of the population was 392 students. The researcher used cluster sampling to get the sample. The sample consist of 87 students, which consist of VIII1 44 students that taught by using English grammar book as media and VIII5 43 Students that taught by using Internet as media. This research quantitative approach and the technique of collecting data used t-test formula. The result of the research showed that the comparison between using English grammar book and using Internet as a media on the students’ ability in mastering past participle can be described as below: the average score of the students’ ability which taught by using English grammar book as a media = 85 with the highest score =100 and the lowest score = 50 and the average score of the students’ ability which taught by using Internet as a media = 90.2 with the highest score = 100 and the lowest score = 60. Based on the statistical computation of t-test formula, found the coefficient = 2.31whereas the value of ttable = 1.66. It was indicated that there was the comparison between using English grammar book and using Internet as a media on the students’ ability in mastering past participle at MTs N 2 Medan. It showed that the teaching learning process by using Internet was more effective to increase the students’ ability in mastering past participle at MTs N 2 Medan.

Abstract

This research was aimed to find out the effect of implementing showing object strategy on the students’ speaking ability. The subject of this research was eleventh grade of Mts Muallimin univa Medan in 2016 academic year. The object of this research was to improve students’ ability in speaking by using showing object strategy . This research of this study was conducted by using classroom action research. The technique of analyzing data of this research was applied by qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data were taken from observation sheet, diary notes, interview and documentation . the quantitative data were taken from the test. Data was taken from the result which was carried out in two cycle. And two cycles conducted in five meetings. The test was given to the students in form of pre-test, post-test in the first cycle, and post-test in the second cycle. The result of analyzing the data showed that there was an increasing on the students’ ability at speaking from each cycles. It was found the mean of pre-test score (59.31). where, there were 13 students got success score criteria (31.70%) and 28 students got unsuccessful (68.29%). After doing cycle I by using showing object strategy , there was an improving of the result of the students’ mean scores (68.36) where 20 students got successful criteria score (48.78%) and 21 students got unsuccessful criteria score (51.22%). then, for second cycle, there was improvement of students’ mean score (77.02). where, 35 students got success criteria score (85.36%) and 6 students got unsuccessful criteria score (14.63%). in other words, the students’ ability at speaking taught by using showing object strategy was improved. For the hypothesis testing used t-test formula, from the computation, it can be seen that coefficient of t-count (10.64) with fact level α = 0.05 was 2.05. In the coefficient of tcount (10.64) >ttable (2.05). Thus, alternative hyphothesis (Ha) could be received. Based on the finding, alternative hyphothesis (Ha) stating that showing object strategy could improve the students’ ability in speaking accepted  and could make class atmosphere more alive and active.Keyword:  students’ ability, showing object strategy, speaking

Abstract

Recent studies have demonstrated that praise for academic performances can affect students’ intrinsic motivation and performances in learning. This study aims to investigate the value of teachers’ effective praise and feedback to adult learners to create a positive classroom climate. The participants of this study were 41 students of fourth semester, TBI-4, UINSU. This study was conducted with a descriptive qualitative research which incorporates both qualitative and quantitative instruments to accomplish the objectives of the study. The questionnaires were distributed to the students. The questionnaires had ten close-ended questions. Students were asked to choose one best answer based on their learning experiences or their learning expectations. The results of the study suggest that effective praise and feedback are needed to boost adult leaners’ motivation in learning. Adult learners define characteristics of an effective praise is brief, objective and explicit. Meanwhile, an effective feedback could be delivered in a clear, brief, practical and relevant way. Adult learners also realize the importance of effective praise and feedback to maintain teacher-student interaction which results to positive classroom climate.
