Abstract

The purpose of this community service is to enhance the interest of young children in the elementary level to read by using storytelling. It is important to develop the love to read from early on since the mastery of reading skills has many benefits. In this community service, the committee performed storytelling to 75 third grade students at the elementary level. During the service, some data were collected to evaluate if storytelling could make the participants interested to read a given reading material. The collected data were answers to two questionnaires and a comprehension test. The results of the analysis showed that out of the 75 participants, 27 of them, actually had low interest in reading, eventually read the given reading material after watching the storytelling. In addition, all participants stated that they enjoyed the storytelling performance. These findings indicate that storytelling is potentially able to enhance the interest in reading, in particular in young children.

Abstract

This community service program is motivated by a number of incidents that have befallen Indonesian citizens staying abroad. Most of the cases could be attributable to one single factor: the lack of information about the rules and regulations in the foreign country. This lack could have been compensated by requesting for consular assistance from the local KBRI (the Indonesian Embassy) or KJRI (the Indonesian Consul General) as well as getting information from the local citizens. This activity is done to High School Grade 3 students because after graduating from high school they have an opportunity to go abroad, either to continue education, work, or for recreation. By providing legal counseling and English training they will be better prepared if the plan to go the country is done. The method employed in this program was providing counsel to Indonesian citizens on the roles of KBRI and KJRI as well as instruction on useful English expressions that they will need if they are involved in any incidents in another country. This program was effective as the target participants were the twelfth-grade students who might want to go abroad for a number of reasons such as studying, working or going on vacation. It took place in the Tangerang Regency, the province of Banten, where such program had never been provided for the participants. It is suggested that future programs should include simulations and role plays, e.g. talking to immigration officers in a foreign country.

Abstract

The classroom needs a comfortable atmosphere for learning activities. One of the comfortable factors is free from noise, which was not present in the classrooms of SDN 4 in Ternate City. This happens because the school is located on the main street with two lanes for two directions. The noise level at this location measured from the front classroom, which is directly adjacent to the main road, reached 74,02 dB. The number exceeds the noise threshold for the educational environment, which may prevent the learning activities from running optimally, as well may cause the students and teachers loss of hearing. The present community service attempted to utilize used goods in the form of egg trays to reduce waste in the environment. The KKN-PKM aimed to renovate the classroom so that it becomes a soundproof classroom by reducing the noise from the outside of the building to make the students and teachers in the classroom feel comfortable during the learning activities. The methods used in the early stage were surveys, interviews, and measurements of the beginning and end. The result of this community service was in the form of a soundproof classroom of SDN 4 in Ternate City. The average number of measurements before and after the installation of egg trays looked significant, that is 74,02 dB was reduced to 59,8 dB. The result obtained a positive response from the stakeholders and all the students and teachers of SDN 4 in Ternate City.

Abstract

The natural resources potential at Pangandaran has become strategic since its status as a district is definitive. Being a new district, Pangandaran has a number of challenges that must be faced in the era of free trade that is getting closer. That is, it requires qualified skills from the government officials. One of these skills is related to information management for the public. The purpose of this community service is to describe and explain how to improve the knowledge and skills of civil servants engaged in the field of information services in Pangandaran district, especially those related to information management techniques that have news value. The implementation of community service was conducted by lecture, question and answer, and simulation. The results of the activities show that state civil servants engaged in information services for the community in Pangandaran district did not appear to have sufficient knowledge and skills in terms of information management needed by the community. This is evident from the lack of information on the website in government agencies regarding the updating of activities in the district of Pangandaran. Based on our community service activities, we conclude that there has been an increase in knowledge and skills shown by the many questions and discussions of participants on how to find, manage and pack information into valuable news needed by the community. It is suggested that the implementation of community service activities should be in the form of assistance so that speakers would be able to inculcate the values of professionalism in the management of information that is important for the community in Pangandaran district through continuous capacity building and empowerment of professional civil servants in the field of communication.

Abstract

Panti Sosial Asuhan Anak (PSAA) Putra Utama 3 and 4 are units of DKI Jakarta Social Service that provide alternative foster care for adolescents. As substitute for parents, PSAA is responsible for fulfilling the needs of the foster kids. Unfortunately, the service provided is inadequate, both from the quantity and the quality of the caregivers. That is, even though the kids’ physical needs are met, their psychological needs are often neglected. As a result, problems emerge, including the feeling of apprehension about their future after leaving the orphanage, which were worsened by their poor social and academic ability. These problems seem to stem from low level of self-efficacy, namely one’s confidence in the ability in organizing and carrying out actions needed to attain certain result, which in this case is to be able to survive outside the orphanage. As a means of intervention, a psychological development program was planned. To ensure the program effectiveness, a need analysis was carried out. The result showed that the skills needed by the kids include understanding oneself, positive attitude, understanding one’s learning style, time management, self-discipline, communication, teamwork, and goal-setting. Similar to adolescents in general, the kids’ relationship with their significant others greatly affect their emotion and motivation. Meanwhile, their idea about their future was not yet concrete or focused. Different approaches to the boys and girls were applied in executing the program, although generally, the use of video and game effectively was able to catch their attention. In order for the intervention to be thorough, the program was also provided to the caregivers.
