Abstract

Online learning is a choice to use in this current pedagogy. The most prominent power in online learning is the wide room for teachers to develop students engagement during the learning process. This study aims to figure out how students are engaged in online learning, to describe and examine in depth how they are engaging themselves in the online learning. This study employs a case study. The data were obtained from a collection of students chat and discussion in SNS. The data were obtained by observation, questionnaires and interviews. Observation data and questionnaires were analyzed by using Dixsons (2010, 2015) students engagement theory, which incorporates six engagement behaviors. As the analysis procedure, students chats and interview were analyzed inductively (Cresswell, 2012). The result shown that most of students were engaged in the online learning through the SNS application. Specifically, the engagement shown by the students to this simple application indicates that the impact of online learning on the students engagement is not determined by whether the platform used is high- or low.

Abstract

In the era of globalization, self-efficacy and decision-making are needed to complete self-quality. Many education experts believe that debate is closely correlated with self-efficacy and decision-making. Therefore, this study investigates the correlation between debate, self-efficacy and decision-making. This correlation study involved 67 students in the English Debate competition at the East-Java English Club (EJEC) 4 2020. 25 questionnaire items with Yes/No options were used to determine student debate perceptions and two Likert scale questionnaires, each consisting of 26 items for measuring decision making and 30 items to measure self-efficacy were also given to students. The Kendall's Tau Correlation ver.21 for windows demonstrates a moderate correlation between debate and decision-making (r=.436), debate with self-efficacy (r=.513), and self-efficacy and decision-making (r =,827). From these results, it can be concluded that there is a significant correlation between debate and decision making, debate with self-efficacy, and self-efficacy with decision-making. It also bringsrecommendations for further researchers to find out more about students' perspectives and debate coaches regarding the debate method to develop students' decision-making abilities and self-efficacy

Abstract

Different learner’s educational levels need different teaching method orientations. Adult and young learners are certainly treated by using different teaching method orientation. The independency of college students as adult learners in learning is still oftentimes found in low level. Both college students and lecturers still have big chance to be involved in a learning process which is not yet entirely supported by principles of independent learning.. This condition is quite contradicted with their status as adult learners who should have applied independent learning, and still experienced by the students at English Education Department of Muria Kudus University (EED MKU). The high independency of learning refers to the adult learners that should be involved in Andragogically oriented teaching methods (AOTM), while the low independency of learning refers to the young learners that should be involved in Pedagogically oriented teaching methods (POTM.) This study is aimed at comparing the effectiveness of implementing AOTM and POTM to the students graduating from vocational and non vocational high schools. This is a quantitative study with the population of 87 students joining Speaking for Instructional Purposes (SIP) classes at EED MKU. Teaching practice pre and post tests are used as the instrument of this study. The results indicate that AOTM and POTM give impact to improve the teaching practice achievement of the students both graduating from vocational and non-vocational high schools when comparing the scores of pre-tests and post-tests, but the AOTM and POTM implemented in SIP classes with students graduating from vocational schools and from non-vocational schools do not result in impact on their teaching practice. However, in a certainly different condition the implementation of AOTM and POTM might give more impact to the teaching practice achievement of the students graduating from vocational schools than those graduating from non-vocational schools
