Abstract

Abstract Reflection of feminism is seen through the statements, ideas, and behaviors in Divergent novel. It is depicted through its major female characters. Those characters show their power, strength, and bravery which are different with women in common. In this research, I use the theory of literature by Rene Wellek and Austin Warren which is used to analyze the characterization through the major female characters in the novel which are constructed by Veronica Roth. Then, feminism by Simone de Beauvoir is applied to know how the social status of those major female characters is and how they have reflected feminism. Finally, this analysis will show to the readers about women's power. The analysis of the reflection of feminism in Divergent novel shows women also have the same rights as men, and women are not always subjugated. According to statements, behaviors, and ideas of feminism in the novel, it is shown that every woman actually can choose whatever they want depending on their own desire. Keywords: reflection, feminism, women's power, equal rights.

Abstract

AbstractIt is commonly found that testing policy affects learning and teaching process occurring in educational institutions. This case study investigated the impacts of employing the PBT TOEFL test as the progressive and summative tests in a higher educational institution in one of the biggest towns in Indonesia. The data was collected through observation, field notes and personal interviews with six English language lecturers to get in-depth information based on their experience. The data from the interview was later transcribed. The whole data was analyzed qualitatively. The results showed that on the macro level, the test indeed affected the policy makers’ decisions that demanded the lecturers to teach to the test and expected the students to study language outside the classroom. Their decisions inevitably also affected the individuals in the micro level. It is shown that even though the testing policy contributed positive impacts, it dominantly affected language and teaching process negatively. The perceived positive impacts included the practicality of administering the test and language explicit knowledge input to the students. The perceived negative impacts were categorized into two groups: (1) the negative attitude of the lecturers toward language teaching and the students’ negative attitude toward learning; (2) the distorted focus of language teaching and learning. These results advocate for an evaluation towards the policy for a better language learning and teaching. Keywords: second language test, testing impacts, washback, testing policy

Abstract

Selection of task types in learning listening certainly affects the quality oflearners’ necessities. The seven types of tasks offered by Willis (2007) are oftennot simply applicable because different class characteristics always presentdifferent burdens in determining the right types of task. The goal of this studyis to describe learners’ prospect of task types in teaching listening skill at EFLclass for university students. A listening class consisting of thirty students whichhad experienced different task types in four years was chosen. To achieve theobjective, the researchers collected the data by observing the teaching learningprocess and interviewing both the teacher and the learners. The result of dataanalysis revealed that there were four types of task implemented in the listeningclass, those were; listing task, sharing personal experience task, comparingtask and creative task. The class used listing task by asking the learners tomention the information they have got from the short video. Comparing taskwas implemented by asking the learners to match the information betweenthe video and what they have got. In sharing personal task, the class askedthe learners about their personal experience that was related to the discussedmaterial. The last was creative task in that learners were to find their own videoabout the topic they have decided and asked the learners to present their videoin front of class by telling the audience about the content of the video. In short, the final end of employing task types is on helping learners grasp their learningprospects so in designing the task types the class has to stick to the objective ofthe task, the materials and level of difficulty and the learners’ capability.
