<![CDATA[This study attempts to describe the communication strategies (CS) utilized by English education students in the first semester at the University of Muhammadiyah Semarang. Data derived from the transcription of online conversation using virtual video conference occurred in the classroom. By evaluating their utterances and applying Celce Murcia (1995) typologies of communication strategies, this descriptive qualitative study was able to determine the frequency of communication methods utilized in the class of Transactional and Interpersonal Conversation. According to the findings, the frequency of communication strategies was Avoidance Strategies (15%), compensatory strategies (48%), Stalling or time gaining strategies including fillers, hesitations, and gambits (16%), and appeal for help (22%). ]]>

<![CDATA[Young learners’ awareness of learning English in many places are still interesting to be investigated in Indonesia since in the elementary school, English sometimes taught and some other institution decided to not taught it for some reasons. The study was designed to investigate the student’s perception of picture to help them in boosting motivation in learning English as a foreign language. In addition, they were being affirmed to elaborate their engagement in the classroom. The phenomena were observed and questionnaire were managed to get the data. From the study it was found that student’s motivation is improving, revealed from the observation and the questionnaire’s result. The students’ engagement in learning English was more dynamic and the classroom atmosphere become more joyful. Further, it can be interpreted that they were become more enthusiastic and stimulated when learning English. Supporting these facts, they affirmed that learning English was best experienced whenever the teacher used an interesting media, choosing a fun topic, and giving them chance to compete with their classmates. ]]>

<![CDATA[This conceptual article addresses the crucial issue of out-class collaborative learning as understood and practiced among most EFL Indonesian students. With the popularity of collaborative learning among EFL students, collaborative learning in secondary as well as tertiary education has been largely influenced by group competition and product-based assessment. As a result, the dishonesty of collaborative learning occurs because of the absence of process-based approaches during out-class collaboration. This article elaborates the cause and practices of “You do the task and I will present it” as a form of collaborative learning. This article highlights the causes and effects of the deceitful collaborative learning process as well as proposes valuable recommendations for proper collaborative learning activities. Finally, the article proposed a collaborative learning model using a universal collaboration approach to overcome the deceitful practices of out-class collaborative learning.]]>

<![CDATA[Finding out a text which is appropriate to students’ needs is sometimes not easy. In the pandemic era, however, teachers are required to present texts which are more interesting for students’ learning, especially because the learning is done online. Without the presentation of interesting texts, students may get bored to read during their online learning. In order for the teachers to be able to present interesting texts, previous studies have shown that teachers can develop a learning text from movies or films. Referring to the previous studies, the writers were interested to develop English text material using the film Little Prince by Max Oxborn as the learning media and investigate how pre-service English teachers perceived it as a learning text for senior high schools. The research was done by using Borg and Gall’s model in which the writers followed were five stages namely initial data collection, planning, initial product format development, initial product testing (in a small scale), and the revision of the product. In this article the writers present the learning text created from the film Max Oxborn’s Little Prince along with how pre-service English teachers perceived the text produced in this research as a learning material. ]]>

<![CDATA[This study determined students' perception of the use of quizlet application in students' vocabulary mastery. Quizlet is a suitable smartphone-based learning used for learners at various levels of education and at various levels disciplines, not only limited to vocabulary learning. It described the students' perception of the use of quizlet application on the vocabulary of students at Junior High Schools in Bandar Huluan, totaling 20 students. This study used a qualitative descriptive research method in which this research described something as it is by using words, such as observation and interviews to 20 students. The results indicated that quizlet has several benefits in the process of teaching English, especially vocabulary. From the students’ perception, it can be concluded that 15 students said that learning vocabulary by using the quizlet application was very comfortable, interesting and easy to understand. On the other hand, 5 students said that learning vocabulary by using the quizlet application was a little difficult to understand. There are several factors why this can happen, including obstacles in operating the quizlet application such as the lack of student knowledge about how to use the features of the quizlet application, and also the lack of internet network access on their smartphones. ]]>

<![CDATA[This study examines the ideologues' language used in the Lily by Tsana beauty product advertisement. The study is intended to depict the connection between Tsana’s popularity significantly affecting and influencing Lily by Tsana's branding. The study takes the quote and slogan that the advertisers used as a text and then analyzes each advertisement's meaning and ideology. The study applies a textual analysis to the motto and slogan that the advertiser used in the product’s advertisements as its research method. It adopts Fairclough’s concept of three-dimensional critical discourse analysis as its approach method. The textual analysis involves interpretation of the beauty product advertisements of Lily by Tsana and how the ideology of Lily by Tsana beauty products composed with the stereotypes and slogan “Makeup should never be used to hide yourself. It should be used to enhance your natural beauty.” In addition, this study revealed how Tsana, known as Rintik Sedu, influences the beauty product by using bait to specify the target market for Lily by Tsana itself. The advertisements of Lily by Tsana offer an idealized lifestyle of how natural beauty can make you love yourself more and assume that the audiences are unable to decide rationally and then consider the words of the advertisement are indeed valid. Thus, the founder of Lily by Tsana used her language power to gain control over her fans and consumers. Ideological language is used to control people’s minds, and so is the popularity and social standing of the founder. The analysis results in the analysis of personal pronouns, positive adjectives, the declarative mood in clauses, cohesion, parallelism, modes, social relations, and the connection between the founder’s social standing and beauty products. ]]>

<![CDATA[Gender stereotypes are indicated as basic understandings why the femininity and masculinity take a crucial portion towards Indonesian higher educational majors and occupational choices. The formation of gender-based occupation stereotypes is that there is an assumption that to be successful in doing certain profession, one must have feminine or masculine qualities, depending on the type of job. In different case, the participant tries to break out those assumption by choosing profession. This study aims to reveal how personal narrative led someone to break general gender-based occupation stereotypes in Indonesia. The research method is qualitative. The participant was one male nurse through semi-structured interview. The result shows that specific plot of story life giving huge influence towards someone’s professional choices.]]>

<![CDATA[The purpose of this study is to explore nursing students' perceptions of the use of the TPACK Framework within Task-based Language Teaching in an online class. The study employed a one-shot survey design. The participants of this study were 40 undergraduate nursing students at the nursing study program Poltekes Solok, West Sumatera. To avoid teacher-centered learning, this study implemented the TPACK Framework within Task-based Language Teaching, which has the potential to modify the way students learn. The questionnaire was delivered to the students using Google forms after the online learning activities were completed. The questionnaire was statistically analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency and percentage. The findings showed that most nursing students had positive perceptions of the use of the TPACK Framework within Task-based Language Teaching in online classes. Thus, incorporating the TPACK Framework into Task-based Language Teaching may become one of the potential methods of teaching English for nursing in an online class.]]>

<![CDATA[Video game translation is a complex process that uses many aspects from other types of translation, such as literary translation, subtitling strategy, and audiovisual translation into a dynamic whole. Video game presents as a new medium in translation study. Even though video games translation is a new thing in translation study, the translation practice has been done many times over the past last year.This study will do research on a Game named “Genshin Impact”. The characters were chosen because both of them have different characteristics and behaviour in the game. Moreover, both of these characters come from a different town that has a different culture which leads to differences in their utterances. Therefore, both characters have different kinds of utterances which will be interesting to trace how the subtitlers apply the strategies for each character’s utterances.This research aims at analysing the subtitling strategy employed to translate the Qiqi and Bennett utterances, from English to Indonesian. All utterances of both characters will be analysed in this research. English will be the source language and Indonesian will be the target language as the data for this research. There are many strategies found which are used to translate both characters’ utterances, such as condensation, imitation, and transfer. It is expected that the research will find a result which might contribute to the game subtitlers.]]>

<![CDATA[The research is aimed at describing the types of translation errors made by the English Literature Students in translating news text from English into Indonesian. The present study employed a descriptive qualitative study. The research subject was the sixth-semester students of the English Literature Study Program, Faculty of Economics, Law, and Humanities, Universitas Ngudi Waluyo who have taken a Translation Course. The news text was taken from the Jakarta Post and it consists of 22 paragraphs. The news texts were then translated into Bahasa Indonesia and they become the target texts as the sources of data to investigate the students’ translation errors. They were then classified into five types of errors according to Vilar et al. (2006, 698). The research results revealed that there were 108 translation errors in the form of incorrect words (60,2%), punctuation (18.5%), missing words (12,03%), and word order (0,9%). It can be concluded that the most frequent errors made by the students are incorrect words, punctuation, and missing words. ]]>
