Abstract

In folktales, the main characters are often animals. Choosing animals as the characters could attract children as the tales’ target readers. They are strategically selected as the plots’ point of departure. The depiction of animals should be chosen carefully. Children would find the stories easy to follow if they could find the characters in their surroundings. This paper aims to rigorously examine the linguistic choices employed in some folktales from Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, Timor Leste, and Vietnam in portraying animals. The folktales are titled The Mighty Babau, The Clever Mousedeer, The Dog and The Hunter, and Heaven’s Uncle Toad. The stories are chosen as the object since animals are prominently mentioned in the stories. Even they appeared in the titles. This paper intends to answer how humans and animals are linguistically depicted. The folktales are analyzed by the thematic structure of the clauses. The analysis centers the discussion on the selection of the verbs, their arguments, and the thematic roles assigned to the arguments. Hypothetically, thematically, the animals in the folktales are assigned significant roles as the Agents. They are the ones doing actions and performing the verbs. On the other hand, human characters are not always depicted as Agents. This paper argues that the thematic structure and roles assigned to animals and humans in the folktales imply their close relationship.

Abstract

In the realm of translation, balancing the preservation of meaning and style while adapting to the linguistic and cultural context of the target language is crucial. This study investigates the application of Vinay and Darbelnet's concepts of servitude and option, referred to as "procedures," in the Indonesian translation of Terman's children's book, By Balloon to the Sahara. This study examines instances of servitude, illustrating the obligatory changes the translator made due to inherent differences between the source and target languages. These changes, driven by grammatical correctness and naturalness, are necessary to create a coherent and accessible translation for Indonesian readers. The research also explores instances of option, showcasing the translator's non-obligatory choices, which reflect their personal style, preferences, or a shift in emphasis. The findings of this study highlight the importance of understanding and applying the concepts of servitude and option as translation procedures, particularly in children's literature, where comprehension and readability are of paramount importance. By employing these procedures, translators can produce engaging and accessible translations that preserve the original text's meaning and style while catering to the linguistic and cultural context of the target audience. This study contributes to the field of translation studies by demonstrating the effectiveness of servitude and option in the translation of children's literature, paving the way for future research in this area.

Abstract

Various literary devices are employed in postmodern literature, including fragmentation, intertextuality, metafiction, irony, and skepticism. This study aims to explore how these devices challenge traditional narratives, reshape reality, and critique established power structures. The research method involves a comprehensive literature review to analyze the usage and implications of these devices in postmodern literature. The findings indicate that fragmentation disrupts linear narratives, intertextuality enriches texts through references and allusions, metafiction emphasizes self-reflection, irony subverts conventional meanings, and skepticism questions established ideologies. These devices contribute to a complex and critical understanding of the postmodern world. In conclusion, this research highlights the importance of these literary devices in postmodern literature as tools to challenge norms, broaden perspectives, and encourage critical engagement with narratives and social realities. Further research in this field can provide deeper insights into the role of these devices in shaping contemporary literature and society.
