Abstract

It has been known for a long time that iodine deficiency results in enlarged thyroid gland (goiter). However, iodine supplementation alone frequently fails to eliminate goiter in particular area. At present, experts realized that many agents interact with iodine deficiency in producing goiter. Agents that cause goiter are known as goitrogens. Several goitrogens are found in the foodstuff. Our study in Ngargoyoso sub-district revealed that several foods containing suspected such substances are consumed by school children. They are soybean cake, tofu, onion, tomato, cassava leaves, cabbage, cassava tuber and broccoli. Soybean cake and tofu are made from soybean containing isoflavone which exerts anti-thyroid activity in rats. Onion contains allyl-sulfides. Tomato, cassava leaves, and broccoli contain pigments with antioxidant moiety and anti thyroid activity. Cabbage contains isothyocyanat, a potent anti thyroid in rats and rabbits. Cassava contains linamarin. The study was a recalled study using food frequency questionnaire. In order to prove the goitrogenic activity in those foods an In-Vitro Assay or In-Vivo Assay should be carried out. Since plants grown in certain areas are influenced by soil and water, it is reasonable to measure anti thyroid activity using plants grown locally. This paper will describe those assays and suggest the most applicable in Indonesia.

Abstract

Based on our observation to student and discussion with biology teacher of SMPN 27 Surakarta on April 15, 2010, known that there were complicated problems in Biology class VII-D. The core of those problems was most of the students’ ability on higher order thinking was still lower, therefore, in this research we want to try to solve the problems by classroom action research (CAR). Some studies shown that applying syntax of inquiry and STAD model have many advantages to solve this problem. Hence, these models was applied in this school. The research was conducted during 7 months, start from April until November 2010. The research design was Classroom Actions Research by Kemis and Taggart model, which consist of four phases, i.e. planning of action, doing the action, observation, and reflection. The result of this research showed that applying syntax of integrated inquiry and STAD model can improve the student ability on higher order thinking at Biology classes of grade VII SMPN 27 Surakarta.

Abstract

This research was carried out upon the X grade student of SMA Negeri 2 Sragen. This research wereaimed to find the correlation between psychic vitality and cognitive, correlation between psychological competence and psychomotor competence with cognitive competence on biological learning and the dominant contribution for each independent variable to cognitive competence on biological learning. This is a descriptive-quantitative research with ex post facto. The population of the study is the X grade of SMA Negeri 2 Sragen in academic year of 2004/2005. The sampling technique used is Simple Random Sampling. Sample was taken on 40 students within 8 classes. The data was then analyzed by using MultipleLinear Regretions.The result of research showed that there is positive correlation between psychological vitality and cognitive competence on biological learning of the X grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Sragen (r,ty = 0.424 with Fstatistic = 8'325 ) Ftabte (1,38; 0.0, = 4.10). Positive correlation was obtqin betyveen psychomotor competence and  cognitive competence onbiological learning(r,zy=0.346withF,so,;,,ir=5.163 )Ftabte(1,38;0.0s)=4.10. Thereis positive correlation between psychological vitality and psychomotor competence with cognitive competence on biological learning (R = 0.5036 with F,r,;,,i, = 6.285 ) Ftabte (2,37;0.05) = 3.25). psychic vititity is the iidependent variable giving a dominant cantribution to cognitive competence on biological with contribution of O2.St Vo.

Abstract

The goal of this research was to compare the recitation method using the module and talkative method. Those two methods were applied on the course on the topics of plant reproduction and its dispersal.This was the experimental research which held in SMA N 2 Sukoharjo. Documentation and test method were used in this research which was sampled clustered and randomically. The data obtain was then analyzedby t test.The conclusion was that the recitation method was better than talkative method. That conclusion based on the statistical data observed (tM > ttab = 3, 66 > 1, 66 at the significance level of 5%).

Abstract

ABSTRACT- Metacognition skill is regarded as higher order thinking. It is important to assure the success of achieving particular learning goal as it guarantees the improvement of student’s ability iof thinking towards particular given concept. Building metacognition skill has been commonly used in learning Genetics. One example of method within metacognition is Reading, Questioning and Answering (RQA model. Theoritically, this model is able to facilitate student to improve his higher order thinking and therefore, metacognition skill in Genetics can be raised through this model.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to improve the observation skill and the learning achievement on Human Motion System, which is taught at grade 8. The research was Classroom Action Research, using Scientific approach based on guided inquiry using smart messages. The participants were 29 students  of Class VIIIE of SMP Negeri 22 Surakarta in 2016. Data was collected by observing learning process and doing test of students' achievement. The instruments of the research consists of lesson plans, observation sheet and guidelines of observation skill, and tests as an assesment of kognitive knowledge. The procedures in this classroom action research adopted the Kemmis and Taggart model which consist of plan, action, observation, and reflection. Qualitative data were analyzed descriptively. The research showed an increase of observation skills and learning achievement of participants students through the application of scientific approach by guided  inquiry using smart messages.

Abstract

This research is aim to find out the different comprehension of human respiration system concept in the Novick type of constructivism learning with concept map and the varied lecturing learning. This study was a quasi-experimental research using Post-test Only With Nonequivalent Groups research design. The sampling technique used was Cluster Sampling one. The populations of this research were all of 11th degree students of science at SMA Negeri 2 Karanganyar in academic year 2012/2013. The samples of this research were the students of 11th Imersi I as experiment group and 11th Imersi II as control group. Technique of collecting data used was a  multiple choice test with reasoning, essay test, and observation sheet. The hypothesis testing was carried out using t-test. The conclusion of research that there isn’t different comprehension of human respiratory system concept between the Novick type of constructivism learning with concept map and the varied lecturing learning.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan mengembangkan tes uraian singkat interaktif pada mata kuliah biologi lingkungan berbantuan komputer dengan Microsoft Office dan Visual Basic for Application. Instrumen tes yang dikembangkan bertujuan mengukur kemampuan berpikir tingkat tinggi mahasiswa pada mata kuliah biologi lingkungan. Instrumen tes yang dikembangkan berbasis Microsoft Office Powerpoint dan Visual Basic for Application. Penelitian ini merupakan Research and Development dengan modifikasi subjek coba pada beberapa tahapan penelitian. Penelitian hanya dilakukan sampai tahap perbaikan produk operasional. Tahapan penelitian yang dilakukan adalah sebagai berikut: (1) Penelitian dan pengumpulan data awal, (2) Perencanaan, (3) Pembuatan produk awal, (4) Uji coba awal (validasi ahli), (5) Perbaikan produk awal, (6) Uji coba lapangan 1 dan 2, dan (7) Perbaikan produk operasional. Penelitian melibatkan subjek coba sebagai berikut: (1) Uji coba awal melibatkan ahli materi biologi lingkungan, ahli ICT, ahli penelitian dan evaluasi pendidikan; (2) Uji coba lapangan 1 kelompok kecil melibatkan 12 mahasiswa pendidikan biologi UMS yang mengambil matakuliah biologi lingkungan; dan (3) Uji coba lapangan 2 kelompok besar melibatkan 20 mahasiswa pendidikan biologi UMS yang mengambil matakuliah biologi lingkungan. Teknik analisis data yang digunakan adalah analisis butir soal sesuai kaidah pada tahap validasi dan uji coba lapangan. Hasil akhir penelitian ini adalah tes uraian singkat interaktif berbantuan komputer pada materi biologi lingkungan yang valid secara internal, reliabel tinggi dengan koefisien 0,814>0,456 (r tabel), tingkat kesukaran sedang dengan indeks kesukaran 0,4 hingga 0,7, dan daya diskriminan (daya beda) baik dengan indeks diskriminan 0,4 hingga 0,7. Kesimpulan hasil penelitian adalah instrumen tes uraian singkat interaktif berbantuan komputer yang dikembangkan layak untuk mengukur kemampuan berpikir tingkat tinggi pada materi biologi lingkungan.

Abstract

This research and development aims to produce teaching materials such as textbooks which are viable and validated by experts materials, media, and language, as well as validated by the student of biology education. The model used in this research and development is the 4D model proposed by Thiagarajan which consists of phases define, design, develop, and disseminate, but the stage of development carried out to develop stage. The trials were carried out, among others, by three expert lecturers and 31 students of fourth semester of biology education program. Expert lecturers consists matter experts, media specialists, and linguists. The test is done in two stages, the individual tests and test a small group of trial results and revised measures showed that the textbooks have categorized and ready for use in real learning. The result  of the test is some recommendations for developing the books, include language, matter, picture, illustration, and layout.

Abstract

 Fungi infection is one of the main causes of health problems in Indonesia. One of them is caused by Candida albicans. To overcome infectious diseases can be done by looking for new alternatives with better antifungal activity. One of them uses hive and forest honey. Hive and forest honey contain many secondary metabolite compounds. The purpose of this research is to know the antifungal activity of methanol extract of honeycomb and forest honey to Candida albicans and to determine the effect of extract concentration on Candida albicans. This research includes the extraction process by maceration method and activity testing done by the method of paper disc diffusion.The results showed that the highest antifungal activity was in the extract of hoive methanol Namely bags of pollen, egg bags, honey bags and propolis each having inhibitory power of 20 mm, 19.08 mm, 18.5 mm, 15.7 mm And the lowest antifungal activity was found in the honey methanol extract of 10.1 mm. The higher the concentration of extract, the more the active substance content in it, so the antifungal activity will be greater.
