Abstract

The issue of indigenous and non-indigenous, minorities and the majority has become an exaggerated issue causing the sentiment and the disturbance of relations between ethnic minorities and ethnic majority. This article was intentionally written to see a portrait of harmony between ethnic Minang and Tionghoa in Padang City. Lately it is so easy to insult and degrade the religion of others. Therefore, this article aims to provide awareness to the parties who deliberately divide relations and harmony among tribes, religions, races and groups in Indonesia. One of portraits of inter-ethnic and inter-religious harmony can be seen in West Sumatra. The ability of ethnic Chinese to be ethnic Minang who use matrilineal system by emphasizing the element of motherhood makes the potential of conflict can be minimized.  The harmony between the two ethnics could frequently end with inter-ethnic marriage.

Abstract

As an appreciation for creative works, the Indonesian Film Festival (FFI) and the Indonesian Film Appreciation (AFI) aimed at giving an award for the best work. The interesting part was the implementation of AFI 2015 emerged several award categories such as Appreciation for the Local Government and Film Criticism Appreciation. This occurred in the midst of concerns about the development of Indonesian film industries which tend to be stagnant. Film communities tried to give fresh ideas and break the film market. This new award can certainly be seen as an effort through the film festival program in spurring the film industries with creative work of educating the nation's children, especially film as a "cultural builder". Film is a cultural construction. In America, the country where the Hollywood film industry is the mecca of film generation, people still debate the cultural influence of Hollywood on social phenomena. Sociologist Norman Denzim said that drinking shows in US films have influenced the misleading romanticism of alcoholism in public consciousness (Vivian, 2008: 160). On the other hand, borrowing Adorno's term, the film has carried the culture industry powerless with market power. Discussing the media industry leads to the film media economy, as the focus of Indonesian filmmakers today. For most producers, award-winning films at international film festivals are "less meaningful" when they are not in box office positions. This paper proposed to reveal the economic attractiveness of the film media and the quality of Indonesian film content in accordance with the Republic of Indonesia Act. Number 33 of 2009 on Film. It stated that the film has a function: culture; education; entertainment; information; the driving force of creative work; and economy.

Abstract

An intercultural communication that occurs in a boarding school (pesantren) environment is a unique phenomenon. A number of pesantrens in Indonesia apply a pattern of multicultural education.  Therefore, their students (santri) understand different culture of students who come from different cultural background. Through literature review and theoretical studies in constructivist paradigm, it can reveal a number of interesting scientific realities about transcultural communication of boarding schools in Indonesia. First, the students of different cultures understand each other and they make friends well during their study at the pesantren. Secondly, kyai has a strong influence in conveying messages of intercultural communication among santri by using pesantren symbols. Third, pesantren cultivation develops multicultural education based on Islamic teachings that understand plurality in human relations. Fourth, the boarding school environment can communicate a multicultural communication message through pesantren network, both national and international so they can build the spirit of togetherness in the diversity.

Abstract

General elections and regional head elections in Indonesia are conducted directly. The pattern of community participation is changed. The emergence of pragmatism or political pragmatism in society becomes an interesting political culture to study. Practically, pragmatism means a condition that encourages people to get benefits instantly. As a result, people take any actions to make it happen. In reality, pragmatism not only affects the upper classes (those with a high level of education) but also ordinary people (lower class society or those with low levels of political education). The development of money politics, cow trade politics, the sale of votes, or the existence of political dowry is a sign that there has been a political transaction becoming one of the indicators of pragmatism reality in society

Abstract

Quran is "the way of life" for Muslims. Reading Quran with tarteel is a must (Fardhu Ain). Therefore, TVRI as a public television that has a vision of educating the life of the nation contributed to invite audiences to improve their ability to read Quran with tarteel. This study aimed to determine what efforts made by TVRI to improve audiences’ knowledge in reading Quran with tarteel. Qualitative research method used in this study with in-depth interview. Informant in this study was a producer who has ideas to create programs TELETILAWAH Serambi Islami on Friday edition. The analysis used Theories of influences on Mass Media Content introduced by Pamela J Shoemaker and Stephen D. Reese. The results of this study found a large number of audiences’ attention to these programs and increased their awareness to read the Quran with tarteel.

Abstract

This study was intended to get a comprehensive picture of meaning construction in building the quality of healthy life. This research used symbolic interaction theory of George Herbert Mead. The study relied on phenomenological approach under a paradigm of constructivism using interpretative analysis. In-depth interview, observation, and documentation study were conducted to collect data. This study found that the motives of Herbalife community health club Ersanddi members to participate in a healthy life program because they wanted to lose weight and to be physically fit.  The meaning of healthy lifestyle for them is to be able to enjoy their life and worship to the Creator without any obstacles. The meaning of healthy life to the members of Herbalife community health club of Ersanddi was influenced by their environment namely significant others and reference groups.

Abstract

Culture is communication and communication is culture. Humans learn culture through communication. At the same time communication is a reflection of human culture. Culture is a subjective and objective element created by humans that increased survival of life and resulted in the satisfaction of actors in ecological niches. Cultures are spread among those who can communicate with each other because they have the same language and live at the same time and place. Culture can be learned, passed down from generation to generation. Culture can be learned through fairy tales, legends and myths. It is similar in a view of Sundanese public health on the tradition of eating fresh vegetables. This study aims to describe the public health view of Sundanese in the tradition of eating fresh vegetables. The research method used qualitative approach. Technique of collecting data was done by interview process and literature study. This study was conducted in Sumedang area of West Java. The results show that the healthy view in the tradition of eating fresh vegetables in Sundanese society is passed down from generation to generation and obtained through informal learning process, formal learning, fairy tales, and myths.

Abstract

Celebrity politicians and mass media attract public’s attention. News about celebrity politicians become a commodity for mass media and it increases the popularity of the celebrity politicians. This creates relationships of capitalism motion in mass media that has penetrated digital media. Focus of this study is public meanings about celebrity politicians on online media. Using qualitative methods and in-depth interviews, this study shows how the practice of the commodification content of celebrity politicians and mass media was interwoven. The result also shows that the practice of the commodification of online media content in the fabric of pragmatism has no exercise of political education efforts through the media. Media were supposed to carry out their duties in an effort to educate the public actually shirking its duty. Practice capitalism in media shallow public thinking on the political dynamics in Indonesia. The struggle between the interests of the media as an institution of political education and vice versa become imaging agents on the political role. This siltation is the embryo of the normalization of news construction power that led towards pragmatism.

Abstract

Facebook, one of social media, becomes a new space for everyone to interact and socialize without being limited by space and time, like in conventional media (mainstream). In its development, social media is also used to support political campaign in general election of regional head (Pemilukada). In addition to reaching the audience without being limited space and time, the cost is also cheap and efficient. Facebook has been chosen by candidates for regional heads as a medium of communication and socialization, not just relying on television media, advertisements in newspapers, banners, billboards, and other media. Candidates also take advantage of social media technology through facebook with the aim to provide access to information for public through cyberspace. The use of facebook is also done by the pair of candidates in the regional head election of Ogan Komering Ulu (OKU) South Sumatra Province in 2015. This study found the use of facebook is quite significant by both pairs of candidates in the election OKU in order socialization and political campaign.

Abstract

Mass media coverage on the rise of the Communist Party of Indonesia (PKI) became public attention including its news on online media. Online media that reported it among others are Republika.co.id, Liputan6.com, and Merdeka.com. The purpose of this study is to find out how online media in Indonesia discourse news text in the issue of the rise of PKI by using a qualitative approach, social semiotics method version of M.A.K Halliday. As an online medium that has certain characteristics such as speed, it was clearly seen in this news. The media became biased and ignored journalistic principles, including the principle of online journalism. The three online media that became the object of this study showed images and illustrations which were provocative and not in accordance to the reported facts. The three media have done news construction subjectively and were less professional.
