Abstract

The old Arabic orthography contains some flaws. Besides having no different symbols to differentiate short and long vowels, it had no diacritics to differentiate the letters, which caused significant reading problems. Those problems became more complicated when it became the means in the process of writing the Qur’an since it caused errors in its recitation. In the post-Mohammedan period, when Islam was spread outside the Arabic lands, some non-Arabic Moslems had difficulties to read the Qur’an. Those problems concerned many scholars and urged them to find solution. Some efforts were done by inventing the reader-friendly orthographic system as it is well known today. This paper aims to discuss that topic. However, some new flaws emerged. The orthographic modifications which have been sufficient for writing needs to be developed and adapted to present demands. Some scholars have proposed some new ideas. Generally, these ideas can be grouped into two opposing views: firstly, those which preserve the existing orthographic tradition, pioneered by Emīl Badī’ Ya’qūb; secondly, those which go beyond it, suggesting almost total transformation, pioneered by Anīs Farīḥa. This paper also discusses their ideas as its second purpose. Based on different epistemological bases, the application of each idea will affect differently in learning/teaching as well as in Arabic religiosity and nationalism.

Abstract

Literary studies of high quality require at least two things: (1) an increase on the weight and depth of appreciation of the literary works under investigation, and (2) the study’s social contribution towards the factual problems in society. The study of literature should involve the production of useful knowledge, instead of formal academic compliance. This paper is to discuss one possible type of study on Indonesian literature, i.e. ecocritical reading of literature. When examined closely through today’s politically contextual lenses and the implications thereof, Indonesian literature on environment and literary filmization can result in useful and referential knowledge. Studies of this kind differ significantly in terms of quality from a mere textual analysis of literary works with a brief, shallow description of some literary terminologies that function only as scientific embellishments. The objective of this article, therefore, is to discuss studies on Indonesian Literature using Ecocriticism as one possible trajectory to transform society.

Abstract

Utterance is a combination between form (surface structure), meaning (deep structure) and other factors, including culture. Utterance, therefore, has semantic and pragmatic content. It is not only about what is said, but also what it implies. This research is aimed to describe a unique language situation in a certain community-The Kaso. The Kaso people have their own paradigm about language, utterance, and the meaning conveyed. They believe that an utterance is all about the sound which is heard without considering any other things behind it. The point of view of this research is ethnography of communication. What should be mastered to face this kind of community will also be the focus of this research.

Abstract

The term "contrastive analysis" (CA) can be defined as how to compare two or more languages in synchronic not diachronic analysis including phonetic elements, morphemic, syntactic, and discourse for the sake of teaching and translation discourse. CA purpose is to look for similarities and differences between two or more languages as the object of study. Benefit from the findings of CA can be used as one of the basic considerations in developing language teaching syllabus and in selecting appropriate translation pattern. This practical method of analysis of language has experienced the ups and downs from time to time which in turn gave birth to two powerful streams (strong version) and weak (weak version). Nevertheless, CA is still needed in the world of foreign language teaching does not turn a blind eye to the weaknesses and strengths. Implications of CA will give influence to teachers, subject matter, and syllabus. Through this analysis, a language teacher can display methods, materials and cargo with special and specific ways. While, the subject matter may be submitted with varying intensity through the CA of the findings of aspects of equality and difference. Syllabus based CA can determine the design of the learning and acquisition targets with existing time allocation.

Abstract

In Arabic Linguistics, Nahwu or Arabic Syntax has established for centuries. However, its complexities make the modern Arabic linguists re-formulate it so that it can be comprehended better by the native and speakers of Arabic as a second language. One of those linguists is Tamâm Hassân, who put Arabic language in a more (al-manhaj alwashfi) established position by perfecting its phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantic. His view over ‘âmil as a central theme and pillar in Arabic syntax or Nahwu reformulates the Arabic syntax by using descriptive approach (al-manhaj al-washfi). This makes Nahwu become more comprehensible.
