Abstract

The object of this study is Sufism Arabic Poetry that contains the views, ideals, and religious ideology of teh Arab. Despite its contents, which mostly talk about social life and love, there is a tendency that those poems contain as well the social anxiety. The material object of this study is the poem entitled ‘Al-Taṣawwuf fi al-Syi’r al-‘Arabī (2003) by H{aki>m Hassan. This study employs Jonathan Culler’s Semiotic Theory, which says that a poem is not just a series of sentences but it is an expression of the author’s mind as his asserion attitude toward society. Poetry also talks about author’s message and commitment on humanity. This study concluded that the Arabic poetry of Sufism is about signs that tell people to live their life at their best because life is only temporary (transient). In the perspective of Culler’s semiotic theory, the author has expressed his view in the poem and confirms its position on human life. In addition, the author also composes some verses of mystical poetry in the thematic scheme that echoes teachings of kindness and benevolence.

Abstract

Abū al-Fath Usmān Ibnu Jinnī, a prolific Arabic linguist with more than forty five works, has a significant role in Arabic linguistics development. He made some efforts to cool down the tension between the two main schools of nahwu Bashra and Kufa that competed to penetrate their influence upon Arabic linguistics theories. Ibnu Jinnī, who had Motazila theological background, tried to bring the Arabic linguistic thoughts out of this conflict and took its way from hegemony of these two schools. He stood up between the two schools theories by combining the philosophical (logical) and sociological approach in discussing issues of Arabic linguistics. This article tries to examine the theory, method and approach used by Ibnu Jinnī in dealing with the linguistics issues. The article finds that Ibnu Jinnī view is that language is not a mere rational entity, but it has social dimensions. Based on this theory, Ibnu Jinnī shifted the paradigm of the Arabic linguistic issues from nah} wu based theories debate to a broader discourse and more comprehensive theories covering internal or structural aspects such as phonology, morphology, syntax as well as external aspects, notably sociology.

Abstract

In translation, theme should be understood as the starting point of information flow. Furthermore, information structure in a legal text affect the interpretation of the legal meaning that will result in how the theme in legal text can be translated well. This study aims at describing kinds of theme and its translation both in the source text (Indonesian) and in the target text (English). It employs a qualitative-descriptive approach. The source of data is the document of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Government of Gunung Kidul District and International Relief and Development (IRD) in Indonesia and English version. Based on the analysis, this study indicates that the appearance of topical themes is more dominant than the appearance of textual themes is. The shift in the target text is influenced by the appearance of multiple themes in the source text. Conjunction as the representation of textual theme in the source text is also found in the form of double conjunction and possibly translated into verb and zero translation in the target text. Besides, emphasizing is a matter that specifically supports how the theme should be translated. Knowing and deciding the theme will enable to emphasize the information structure needed in either the source text or the target text.

Abstract

This study aims to explain the implementation of approximation technique in clause restructuring to produce a target language text, which is functionally equivalent with its source language counterpart. It is deliberately designed to analyze existential clauses contained in an English novel along with its Indonesian translation. Four basic steps, which has been taken to process the data, are (1) data reduction, (2) data display, (3) data analysis, and (4) inference. It is revealed that a number of restructuring phases are employed to achieve functional equivalence. These phases are taken due to the fact that the basic elements of existential clauses in English do not have any one-to-one formal correspondence with their counterpart in Indonesian. Through approximation technique, existential clauses are then restructured according to their communicative or interactive functions. Clauses, which refers to existence, are restructured to form clauses on "being", while those, which refers to events, are restructured according to their types or categories.

Abstract

The purposes of this research are (1) to describe the deviation of meaning in Cak Lontong’s humor materials (2) to describe the changing of constituent in Cak Lontong’s humor materials. This research is a descriptive-qualitative research. Listening method is used as the  data collecting technique, using technique of tap and write. The data analysis method is the reference equalization, using comparative technique to support codification, reduction, presentation, and interpretation. The results of this research are: Cak Lontong exploits gaps and possibilities of new meanings that can be used in words; Cak Lontong deviates meanings by establishing the second meaning as an effort to give surprise to his listeners; and Cak Lontong exploits figurative words of homonymy, e.g. “mengarungi” and “ngurusi” to play the meanings that are conveyed in using the language. The power of Cak Lontong’s humor is in the sensitivity in finding gaps of words, then presenting them by trapping listener’s interpretation to the unintended meanings. A changing constituent occurs to function of process to be participant, participant to participant, participant to circumstances, and circumstances to circumstances. It changes meanings and interpretations of a same word.

Abstract

The study of the metaphor in a literary work can be used to find out the author’s creativity in utilizing words to concretize an abstraction through the use of metaphor. Because every human being is essentially unique, each author is assumed to have his/her own style in creating metaphors. The two questions in this article are: 1) how is the typical form of metaphor in Layla Majnun as the embodiment of creativity? ; 2) what is the function of the use of metaphor in Layla Majnun? Based on the analysis of data, a metaphor can be classified into a phrase, clause, and sentence. At the phrasal level, position or location of the image element can be either in the beginning or in the end of the topic. Meanwhile, at the level of the clause and sentence, image elements are always in the end of the topic. This latter sequence is possible because the clause part of the “explained or described” is filled syntactically by the predicate. The predicate in Indonesian is predominantly located after the subject. The study of the use of metaphor in Layla Majnun leads to the conclusion that the creativity of the author in creating metaphor reflected on how human (the author) sees the world. Because human perception is inseparable from the environment in which the author lives, develops, and interacts, the use of metaphor in Layla Majnun reflects an overview of the social life, values of culture, and customs of the Arab people at that time.
