Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the quality of English for the First Year of Senior High School Implementing the 2013 Curriculum the academic years 2016/2017. The method applied in this research was descriptive method. Data collection techniques used observation check list. There were three textbooks observed. The aspects that were observed consisted of content, presentation, language, and graphic. The result indicated as follows. For the appropriateness the content of view; there were only two textbooks which belong to ‘good’ category books, namely Pathway to English for Senior High School Grade X, published by Erlangga and Bahasa Inggris SMA/MA/SMK/MAK Kelas X, published by Kemdikbud. An others textbook had ‘fair’ category namely Bahasa Inggris untuk SMA-MA/SMK kelas X, published by Yrama Widya. There was one textbook which was categorized into ‘very good’ presentation, namely Bahasa Inggris SMA/MA/SMK/MAK Kelas X, published by kemdikbud. while two other textbooks, namely Pathway to English for Senior High School Grade X and Bahasa inggris untuk SMA-MA/SMK kelas X had ‘good’ category. Concerning the language aspect, there was one textbook, nemely Bahasa Inggris SMA/MA/SMK/MAK Kelas X had ‘very good’ category. Two other textbooks, namely Pathway to English for Senior High School Grade X and Bahasa inggris untuk SMA-MA/SMK kelas X had ‘good’ category. Concerning the graphic aspect, there were two textbooks which belonged to ‘very good’ category, namely Pathway for Senior High School Grade X and Bahasa Inggris SMA/MA/SMK/MAK Kelas X. An others textbook namely, Bahasa Inggris SMA- MA/ SMK kelas X had ‘good’ category. Thus, three textbooks had good category and be worthy to use because they fulfilled the quality of good textbook.

Abstract

The objectives of this research are to identify the perception toward schema theory that used in reading class on the fifth semester students of English Education Study Program of FKIP UNIB in academic year 2010/2011. The population of this research was the fifth semester students of English Education Program of FKIP UNIB in academic year 2010/2011. The population of this study was the whole fifth semester students of English Study Program of Bengkulu University for academic year 2010 – 2011 which consist of 38 students. The sample of this study used total sampling technique. This study was a descriptive study. The instrument of this study was questionnaire. The questionnaire consists of 25 items that purpose to measure students’ perception toward schema theory. The result of this research show that the schema theory  had  86,50%  positive  perception,  12,30%  neutral  perception  and  1,20%  negative perception. It displayed that the respondents had high positive perception toward schema theory. It means that most of the students agree with the application of schema theory as a learning style in the fifth semester students of English Education Program of FKIP UNIB in academic year 2010/2011.

Abstract

Thisstudyaims toinvestigatewhetheror nottheuseofsubtitledanimated cartoonvideosaffectstudents’ reading comprehension and to findoutinwhat performanceof reading comprehension aspectstheexperimentaland controlclassdiffer. ThepopulationincludedallthesixthgradestudentsofSDITAlHasanahKotaBengkulu in  academic  year  2015/2016,  which  consisted  of  77  students.  The  sampleswere  52 studentsthatwere taken fromtwo classes.Theexperimentalclass receiveda treatmentby usinganimatedcartoonvideoswithbimodalsubtitles, while thecontrolclasswas taught byusinganimatedcartoonvideoswithoutsubtitles.A pre-testwasgiven tobothclasses beforetreatment.Thedata wereanalyzedbyusingSPSS16for t-testformula.Theresults show that, firstly, therewasa statistically significantdifferencebetween thegroups in readingcomprehension scores.Therefore, itwasconcluded thattheuse ofsubtitled animated cartoon videoscould improvestudents’ reading comprehension. Secondly, for reading  comprehension  aspects,  the  experimental  class  and  the  control  class  were different inthe literalperformanceaspect.However,intheinferenceperformance,it showed  no  significant  difference.  Based  on  the  results,  it  wasrecommended  to  use subtitled animatedcartoonvideosastheteaching aidinteachingreadingcomprehension

Abstract

This study aims to the degree of effects of the language learning strategies and language learning motivations to English achievements of the English Department students at an Islamic university in Indonesia. The design was the ex-post facto research. A total of 25 students were asked to complete the SILL and Motivation questionnaires. In addition, the document of the students’ TOEFL scores was used to determine the English achievements. The result of this study showed that the language learning motivations had 27.25% effect on the students’ English achievements, while the language learning strategies had 25.6% effect on their English achievements.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out whether the Interactive technique could improve students’ reading comprehension. This was a quasi-experimental research. The population of this research was the eighth grade students of SLTP Negeri 1 Kota Bengkulu which consisted of 193 students. The sample of this research was the class VIII.2 (34 students) as the experimental group and the VIII.3 (40 students) as the control group. The instrument was a reading comprehension test, which consisted of 40 items. Before the pre-test was given, it was tried out to the students of the same level. The result was t-count in the pre-test was smaller than t-table (1.26 < 2.042). This indicated that the groups were of equal ability. For the post-test, in contrast, the t-count was greater than t- table (2.7 > 2.042). This indicated that the interactive technique could improve students’ reading comprehension.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze specific English language skills and kind of technical vocabulary that are needed by the third year automotive students of SMKN 2 Kota Bengkulu. The sample for interview comprised of 12 alumni, they were teachers and various company officers who have a MOU with SMKN 2 Kota Bengkulu. In the interview was used saturation sample. The results of interview with alumni indicate that the English skill most needed in the workplace is reading, the second was speaking, the third was writing and the last place was listening. The automotive students/ alumni need to comprehend the technical terms associated with technical terms in English. Related to car, are kick lever, oil pump, water cooling system, trail and rolling roof. Related to heavy machine are rear body offset, over hung, road clearance, light van and rear engine. Related to motorcycle are swing arm, bottom link fork, drum brake and kick starter. General automotive vocabulary are disc brake, gasoline, head lamp, piston and tire. Mastery of technical terms greatly affect the practice of industrial work (prakerin) of students in the work place.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find the effect of CORI (Concept-Oriented Reading Instruction)strategy on students’ reading comprehension. This reseach was focused on whether CORI  strategy affected students’ reading comprehension. This research employed a quasi-experimental design. The subjects comprised 48 students of grade VIII of SMPN 4 Kota Bengkulu, divided into two classes, the experiment and control class. The instrument was a reading test. The result showed that CORI strategy was effective to improvestudents’ reading comprehension. In addition, the students also had positive attitudes toward the use of CORI strategy. It is recommended to conduct an experiment for another school level

Abstract

A series picture is a sequence of picture dealing with one subject. It may tell a story, present an event, describe a scene, reveal a person, or show how to do something. From the previous studies, series picture has been demonstrated as practical teaching and learning media for students at all grade levels. This method has been identified by researchers as an excellent media for increasing vocabulary and improving writing competence. However, the use of series picture as media for speaking has been relatively unexplored. The objective of this study is to investigate the influence of series picture as media to improve students’ speaking ability. The research design of this study was pre- experimental design. The population was the tenth grade students of MA Al-Hikmah Way Halim Bandar Lampung in the academic year of 2010/2011 and samples consisted of 32 students. The data was collected via test, observation and interview.   In analyzing thedata,  t test formula was used, it was found that t ratio is 3.45 and ttable for a = 0.01 the ttableis 2.46 and for a = 0.05 the ttable is 1.70 it meant that t ratio was higher than t table. Thefinding showed positive feedback received from the subject on the use series picture fortheir speaking ability. Based on the result of this study, it can be concluded that series picture as media is very effective to improve students’ speaking ability.

Abstract

This research was conducted to improve IX A grade students’ ability in listening to recount genre. In doing this research the researcher applied analyzing song technique. There were 32 students involved in this research. The data of this research was taking in two ways; test and observation. In taking the observation data the researcher was helped by two English teachers to know how far that the teaching process worked. The test was used to know the students progress from cycle to cycle. The test result showed that in the cycle one there are 41.25 % students still had problem with the grammar, 38.78% students still had problem with the spelling and 31.87% students had problem in area of hearing, while the average score of the student’s achievement is 61.00. In the cycle two the students made improvement significantly. There were only 25.00% students still had problem with the grammar, 23.00% students had problem with spelling and 27.19% students had problem with hearing, and  the average score of the students’ achievement was 75.00. from the result it can be concluded that song analysis technique can improve the IXA  Grade students ability in listening to a recount genre

Abstract

The aim of this research was to investigate teacher’s questions based on the levels and functions of questions in English classrooms at Senior High Schools. The study was a descriptive qualitative. The subjects of this research were six EnglishSenior High School teachers In Rejang Lebong Regency. For collecting the datatape recording, observation checklist and interview were employed. Result related toresearch questions showed that the teacher’s questions were categorized remembering, comprehending and applying and analyzing level. None of the teachers used questions in, evaluating and creating level of the Bloom’s Taxonomy.In the research only five function of questions were found namely: practicing skills,checking prior knowledge, recapping, and checking understanding. From thefinding it can be concluded that The questions asked by the teachers in classroomsare in lower order cognitive level and not all function of questions (from elevenfunction of questions) were applied by the teachers.
