Abstract

This paper aims at describing one of the Javanese Islam which is sociopoliticallyand economically may be cited as the most dynamic regions duringthe period of one century. Bagelen, the former territory "negaragung has beenamended several times of a changing system of administration and two times achange of economic policy. First, (1830-1870), this period is called as cultivationsystem (cultuurstelsel). After the signing of the political contract 27 September1830, as a result of the defeat of the Java War, there was the so-called'transitional villages', the release of the coastal areas of the power of Mataram, including "mancanegara" Bagelen which was originally a granary for theSultanate of Mataram both Surakarta and Yogyakarta later annexed by thecolonial government. Administratively, the period saw a shift from the"mancanegara", a local residency under the authority of the Dutch East Indiescolonial government, based in Batavia. The period saw a change in zoningthroughout the residency and the addition of new officers to guide and overseethe workings of the indigenous population in the implementation of forcedcultivation. This happens partly because of rapid population growth. Becausethe population is a potential resource then it can be harnessed to the interests offorced cultivation. Second, (1870-1950), in this period re-entering societyBagelen latest round, the period of liberal economic system, in this period theyhave to face the liberal patterns in various aspects of life, ranging from how tomake a living, facing the industrialization of the owners of both private andgovernment capital. At this period also administratively Bagelen be mergedinto the residency of Kedu (August 1, 1901). At the same time, as an Islamicsociety they also have to deal with an influx of new religions, namelyChristianity, a religion which at that time known as the religion of thecolonizers.

Abstract

The most important vision and mision of education is not to teach students “what to think” but rather “how to think.” By doing so, students hopefully be able to think historically. This will encourage the students to use his mind critically as well as scientifically so that they are able to distinguish sharply, for example, (1) “religious truth claim,” (2) “intellectual truth claim,” (3) “ultimate truth;” and also between “religious understanding of history” and “historical understanding of religion.” The present essay argues that the positive way of thinking mentioned above was (is) not working properly in UIN, even in PTAIN/S in general. By referring to the idea of Fazlur Rahman (normative and historical Islam) and also A. Mukti Ali (scientific-cum-doctrinaire), Prof. Simuh indicated the problem in his quite a number of works. Realizing the fact, it is our academic responsibility to understand critically the situation and (then) to contribute significantly through any effort so that our academic vision, mission, and tradition becomes better. As an introduction to the problem and as an initial effort to anticipate such a problem, the following article presents the idea of John F. Wansbrough on “Salvation History,” hoping that the problem will be understood properly and analyzed more deeply and critically

In fact, the 19thcentury is the century that is important in the assessment phase of the Indonesiagrammar (Malay), because in this phase began many grammar books anddictionaries of Malay language, both written by Europeans (British-Dutch-French), as Marsden (1812), Crawfurd (1852), Favre (1875), Hollander (1882), andWijk (1889), as well as written by the Malay people Raja Ali Haji (1850 and 1859).There are fundamental differences between the grammar books written by theDutch and the Malays. Books written by Europeans was Europe-centric, whilethe book written by the Malays are very Arab-centric. Abstract

Abbasid Dynasty is one of Islamic dynasties that had ever achieved theglory which is called the golden age, particularly in the first period of its powerthat is from Khalifah al-Manshur to al-Mamun (754-813). Nevertheless, thebackwards had initially appeared in the time of Al-Mutashim because there hademerged many small kingdoms which had authorities that could not becontrolled, even the capital of Baghdad at that time had been ruled by BaniBuwaihi and Bani Seljuk. The leadership of al-Mutashim had significantlyinfluenced the fall of Abbasid Dynasty. It is believed that such fall is caused byseveral reasons, firstly, it is noted that he had neglected the importance ofknowledge; secondly, it is also found that his leadership had always enforced theteaching of Mutazilah to his people; and lastly, he, along his rule, had alwayspreferred Turks than others so that it made many other people not settled andeven caused many riots.
