Abstract

This study about the conflicts of the main character in the novel Still Alice. The main character in the novel Still Alice is Alice Howland. Alice Howland faces many conflicts with herself, her family and friends in the novel Still Alice. The Objectives of the research are to find out the types of conflict that occur on the main character in the novel Still Alice and to find out the type of conflict occurs dominantly in the novel Still Alice. The writer uses psychological approach for analyzing types of conflict in main character, Alice Howland in the novel Still Alice. The writer uses qualitative descriptive method to find out types of conflicts in main character in the novel Still Alice. The results of this study shows that Alice Howland has four types of conflict according to the of Kurt Lewin’s theory, As follows: Approach – Approach Conflict, Avoidance – Avoidance Conflict, Approach – Avoidance conflict, Double Approach – Avoidance Conflict and the type of conflict occurs dominantly in the novel Still Alice is the approach - avoidance conflict. Everyone always experience a lot of problems in their lives. Therefore, everyone should be able to resolve their problems by taking the best decision for them and other people in their problems.Keywords: Literature, Conflicts, Psychology

Abstract

The problems of this research area:  Are there equivalence and shifts between the English and Indonesian word order in the translation of English sentences into Indonesian? And the aims of this research are to describe equivalence and shift between the English and Indonesia word order in the translation of English sentences into Indonesian. This research uses qualitative method, which is descriptive because it relates with word and sentences. This research analyze the equivalence and shift occurred in the translation of English sentences into Indonesian. The data is taken from the English novel the switch by Sandra Brown and its translated version by Monica Dwi Chresnayani. Data are classified into two categories, they are: Equivalence and shifts occurred in the translation of English sentence word order as it is translated into Indonesian. The number of equivalence of the word order is 37% and the number of shifts is 63%. We can conclude that the shifts occurred more than the equivalence.Keywords: Translation, shift, equivalence, word order.

Abstract

Music video has a signs and different meaning. This research aims to know the signs used and to find out denotation and connotation meaning in the music video of  Blank Space by Taylor Swift. The method used in analysis this music video is qualitative. The results obtained from this research are the semiotic signs found namely visual signs, verbal signs in song lyrics, denotation and connotation meaning.

Abstract

Movie and novel are different kinds of media. In the world of media communication transformation, there is a term which called as Ecranisation. Ecranisation is a transformation from literature to movie. Ecranisation product is not always identical to its original source, which is novel. Ecranisation product also lack in the details department, such as the character and the plot which are not always exist in the movie. The aim of this research is find out what are the plot differences in the Breaking Dawn Novel and Breaking Dawn Movie Part I based on Eneste theory. This study used qualitative descriptive method in analyzing the data. After analyzing the data which used as the source, the writer found that the results of the research show Ecranisation product Breaking Movie Part I undergo 3 plot changes according to Eneste theory, there are addiction, reduction, and variation. The products then divided into 3 different phase, which are orientation, complication, and resolution, except on the conclusion phase, there is no reduction.Keywords: Breaking Dawn Novel, Breaking Dawn Movie Part I, Ecranisation

Abstract

This research investigated the translation of English participial adjectives in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret novels and their translations in Indonesian. The aims of the research are to find out what participial adjectives used in the Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret, to identify how participial adjectives in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret translated into Indonesian and to find out whether the messages in the source text are transferred in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret. The method employed in this research is qualitative. The findings revealed there are157 participial adjectives. It contains of 112 participial adjectives with –ing form and 45 participial adjectives with –ed form. Moreover the strategies which found out as follows :79 data (50%) used literal (syntactic strategy), 73 (47%) data used unit shift (syntactic strategy), 2 (1%) data used transposition (syntactic strategy), 3 (2%) data used explicitness change (pragmatic strategy) According to the data analysis, the most dominate strategy is literal. The result of study showed that from all 157 data, the messages in the SL are transferred in the target language. By using the theories of good translation, the messages of PA in the SL are transferred and can be understood in the TL. Keywords: Participial adjectives, Strategies, Translation

Abstract

Violence, an assault on a person’s control over her/his body and life, can take many forms and has varying consequences depending on the type of assault, its context and interpretation, the chronicity of violence, and availability of support. Feminist theory is becoming the dominant model for explaining violence towards women. The problems of this study are; what kinds of violence that happened towards Sayuri and what the reasons of violence that happened towards Sayuri from Socialist Feminism point of view are. The aims of this study are; to find out the kinds of violence that happened towards Sayuri and to find out the reasons of violence that happened towards Sayuri from Socialist Feminism point of view. This study used qualitative descriptive method in analyzing the data. Qualitative descriptive studies is a comprehensive summarization, in everyday terms, of specific events experienced by individuals of groups of individuals. After analyzing the data it can be concluded that Sayuri experienced four kinds of violence; physical violence, psychological violence, sexual violence, and economic violence and the reasons of violence that happened towards Sayuri from Socialist Feminism point of view are because of the difference of social class and economic status.Keywords: Sociolinguistics, Code Mixing, Types of Code Mixing, Alternation, Insertion, Congruent Lexicalization, The Reason of Using Code Mixing

Abstract

The backgrounds in this research for analyze is what are the causes main character perform in sadism. The aims of the study in this research, are to describe factors trigger Jame Gumb in performing sadism and to describe how Jame Gumb triggers sadism. The data in this research is taken from a novel. It is in the form of utterances and clauses reflecting the sadism of Jame Gumb. In analyzing the sadism that appear in the novel, the writer used descriptive qualitative method. The results of this study shown that Jame Gumb performed sadism because the background of life, he has a bad childhood, his mother is an alcoholic prostitute and his mother never gives attention, love and caring to him and he has killed and flayed at least eleven women, one of them is the first victim Klaus, who scalped and inserted pupa in her throat.Keywords: Jame Gumb, Sadism, Psychological Approach, Personality Disorder, The Silence of the Lambs.

Abstract

This is a descriptive analysis study which focuses on the translation of preposition “of” from English into Indonesia with using novel Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and its translation as its objects of the research. In this research, the researcher wants to find out; 1.) What are Indonesian translations of preposition “of” in the novel Harry Potter, 2.) What are the plausible reasons of translating preposition “of” into Indonesians according to translation theories (principle and strategy of translation). So, the aims of this research are; 1.) to find out Indonesian translation of preposition “of” in the novel Harry Potter and the chamber “Of” Secrets, 2.) to find out the plausible reasons of translating preposition “Of” into Indonesians according to translation theories (principle and strategy of translation). The result of this research shows that there are 23 ways in translating preposition “of” from English into Indonesian and there are 3 categories of plausible reasons that could be given, namely a.) not translated, b.) translated into Indonesian Preposition, c.) translated into Indonesian other parts of speech. So, this research provides better knowledge in translating preposition “of” into Indonesian by not using the same translation for preposition “of” in every context since each context may have different translation for preposition “of” depends from its meaning and function, and that by using the same translation of preposition “of” in every context without considering its meaning and function will lead the translation into a mistake.  Keywords: Descriptive analysis, preposition, translation strategies, translation principles.

Abstract

Women’s movement is in order to reach the equality of right with men in many aspects, such as politic, social, economy and culture. Everyone should be treated as equals unless special circumstances apply regardless of the role of men or women. The problem undertaken in this research relate to feminism, specifically on types of feminism within the female characters in the novel and the reflection of the feminism itself in the ongoing developments of the characters.  The aims of the research are to elaborate types of feminism and their reflection on feminism in novel little women. This research used a qualitative descriptive method and the source of data taken from Little Women novel. As the result of the research, it described that there are four types of feminism from the novel little women. The characters in the novel reflected in Liberal feminism, Marxist feminism, Existentialist feminism, and Radical feminism. However, Feminism is reflected by the struggle of the characters in survival, in placing these lives in the world of men (patriarchy), in being comfort with themselves to do what they feel comfortable for her, as well as their protest form to no longer be the object of violence for men

Abstract

As one of figures of speech, people often use metonymy when they want to refer to one entity by means of another entity based on their contiguity. In translation, this figure of speech can sometime pose a problem, as the target language readers may not culturally accustom with the metonymy that the source language text uses to make reference to a particular entity. By relying on Chesterman’s trope change strategy (or rather a set of strategies), this research attempted to analyze the strategies used in translating _nglish_es found in the novels Exclusive by Sandra Brown and A Pocket Full of Rye by Agatha Christie, which are used as the source of the data in this research. The method used in this research is the descriptive-analytical method. Based on the analysis, the researcher found that the metonymies are translated into two out of three subclasses of the trope change strategy, namely: translating the figurative expression in the same form as the SL figurative expression (ST trope X → TT trope X) and translating the figurative expression plainly into a non-figurative expression in TLT (ST trope X → TT trope Ø). Key words: metonymy, Chesterman’s trope change strategy
