Abstract

The challenges of Drinking Water Treatment Plants (DWTP) are increasing due to the presence of new types of pollutants that can contaminate raw water and increase the processing load on the installation. One of the pollutants that is currently being discussed a lot is plastic particles measuring < 5 mm which are called microplastics. Based on these factual conditions, it is also important to identify the generation of microplastics at the raw water treatment plant in Bandung-Indonesia. In this study, laboratory-scale water treatment simulations and sampling at two drinking water treatment plants in Bandung City were carried out using the grab sampling method to identify their generation in the laboratory. The results showed that microplastics were still found in all processing units, this was in line with laboratory-scale processing which showed that the processing still left residue at the final stage of the experiment. So, it can be concluded that further research is needed to optimize the performance of conventional water treatment units in removing microplastics and the mechanism that can be applied to prevent the spread of microplastics into water bodies.

Abstract

Public open space or Urban open space as a means of outdoor activities are not only become part of the lifestyle but also the needs of the community especially for people who live in urban areas with a daily work routine. One of the public open spaces is the retention basin called Embung, where people carry out various activities both individually and in groups. Here, Institut Teknologi Sumatera (ITERA) as a state university located in South Lampung Regency Lampung Province has several Embungs from Embung A, B, C, D, E, and F. Embung A is the most frequently visit due to its position adjacent to the Terusan Ryacudu street that makes it easy to be accessed not only by ITERA academicians but also by surrounding communities in the morning and afternoon. However, this location which is close to a busy highway makes it potentially get negative impacts from transportation activities, one of which is air pollution. In this research aimed to determine the perceptions of the visitors about the ambient air quality in Embung A. Our research was carried out before the pandemic, more precisely in 2019. The results of the questionnaire found that most of the visitor consider the ambient air quality is in good condition (72%) with more than half of them (59% of the respondent) said that the Embung air quality were important. The statistical analysis results show a significant result (p-value=0.001 < 0.05) between perceptions of air quality with the duration of visits. In conclusion the Embung A visitors have a good perception of Embung’s ambient air quality and its importance. Further research is needed to better understand the motives behind the visit to Embung or other public open space and their relation to other environmental parameters.

Abstract

A one-dimensional geo-electrical method using Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) has been carried out to model lithology and identify an aquifer, a water-bearing rock, in East Lampung to provide the water needs of the poultry breeding industry (PT. X) that is going to be established in the near future. Two VES points had been surveyed using Schlumberger electrode configuration to achieve good depth penetration and good vertical resolution. Geophysical modeling is not unique, overcoming this issue could be done using a global inversion method. A global inversion technique called Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) was performed to create more reliable subsurface lithology, resulting in around 5 – 11% errors. The PSO algorithm deployed here took 1.000 particle numbers with ω=0.8; αl=1.8; and αg=2. The result shows that the study area’s lithology consists of Tuff, Sandy Tuffaceous, and Shaley Tuff. Sandy Tuffaceous is identified as a confining aquifer zone. There are two potential aquifer zones, Aquifer I and Aquifer II. Aquifer II has more potential as water resources of the industry due to its thickness, moreover, it is topped by impermeable Shaley tuff that prevents local climate effects such as rain that could decrease water quality.
