Abstract

This study attempts to discuss the offensive policy taken by Partai Komunis Indonesia (Indonesian Communist Party) in cultural sphere, especially in film during the period of Demokrasi Terpimpin (1957-64). One of the implementation of the policy was the decision to stop the circulation of two films, Pagar Kawat Berduri and Anak Perawan di Sarang Penyamun, written by Asrul Sani and Usmar Ismail. By analyzing varios written and audio-visual sources, this study concludes that the reason were more political. Film was not seen as a form of art, but was suspected as a threat to the political power of the party.

Abstract

Contemporary postmodern culture is characterized by a diversity of cultural forms, the intensive use of high technology, and the multiple identities of its members. The representation of which can be seen in cultural media as in print and electronic media. This study questions the ideological implications of these media and the construction of identities in contemporary society. By analyzing different ads in various Indonesian media with multi-perspective approach, the findings demonstrate how the ideological implications are constructed in imagination, information, technology and figures. In addition, cultural media also involves a network of cultural, social, philosophical and economic aspects in their operations which in turn can cause identity shifts for their users.

Abstract

By deconstuctiong a text as proposed by Derrida, the text can reveals its meanings. To do this, re-reading a text is needed. For this purpose, the study attempts to understand the meanings behind Rendra;s Surat Cinta and Surat kepada Bunda by discussing the use of metaphors. Both poems are read, re-read and discussed to get their meanings. It is argued that the re-readings show opposite meanings as understiood it the first readings. Power, sex and love are among the issues explored in the two poems. Furthermore, the metaphors reflect what sort of person the "I" is.

Abstract

Abstract

This paper attempts to trace the identity construction of the Chinese from cultural anthropology perspective. It argues that the constructed identity is always changing and very much influenced by socio, economic, political and cultural aspects. By looking at the society, the language, the kinship and belief system, it comes to a conclusion that the identity is not as simple as it looks. In fact, it often embodies a misperception of what it this to be Chinese. In this context, emphasises the needs for further development of Chinese studies in Indonesian universities.
