Abstract

The National Examination (NE) has been conducted for several times nation-wide. However, public debates always emerge over the importance of NE prior to the annual excecution of the examination. The government’s policy to raise the passing standard under the pretext of improving the quality of the national education has commonly triggered a heated controversy. This paper discusses the NE from the perspectives of expectations, challenges and opportunities. It attempts to provide an objective picture as to the need to hold NE. As such, it puts the attempts to improve the quality of the national education through NE in a proportionately wider perspective.

Abstract

This article makes a contribution to the documentation of the genre of oral literature known as zapal amongst the Bunaq, a Papuan-speaking group of central Timor. I present an annotated and translated version of the elaborate zapal entitled Hul Topol or Fall of the Moon. Hul Topol is a lengthy, multi-event story which gives etiologies spanning the realms of subsistence, cultural practice and natural order including animal behaviour and appearance.

Abstract

Many (Western) languages have word-based stress, which entails that one, predictable syllable per word is more prominent than all the other syllables in that word. Some linguists claim that such stresses also occur in Indonesian. In this article, we set out to investigate that claim using experimental, phonetic methods. The results confirm our hypothesis that Indonesian lacks word-based stress. Yet, we do observe some kind of prominence pattern. In the last part of this article, we search for the phonological phenomenon that generates this pattern, exploring the level of the phrase to see whether phrasal accents or boundary markers are likely candidates.

Abstract

The Esperanto movement in Indonesia has grown in the past five years from being almost non-existent to having a national association with several clubs. One might therefore assume that the Esperanto movement in Indonesia is a totally recent phenomenon. However, already at the beginning of the twentieth century there were Esperantists in the territory of today’s Indonesia. Between the two World Wars the movement was active: periodicals and books were published, courses held, and clubs and associations established. As a result of the Second World War this vigorous movement collapsed, but following independence the movement reflourished under the guidance of the Minangkabau journalist and feminist Rangkajo Chailan Sjamsoe Datoe Toemenggoeng. In November 1962 Datoe Toemenggoeng unfortunately passed away, and soon afterward the Esperanto movement again collapsed. Research reveals that this repeated disappearance of the movement was due not only to the death of this leader, but mostly to political factors.

Abstract

Wédhatama is one of the most famous Javanese literary works. It was written in early 19th century by K. G. P. A. A. Mangkunagara IV. Its influence in Javanese culture permeates not only the language but also the way of life. The focus of this research in on how, what form and why K. G. P. A. A. Mangkunagara IV conveys his moral message. The study argues that comparative referential technique is used to send a message which is full of moral and lige values, particularly in the concept pf leadership. Furthermore, Wédhatama can be seen as a representation of Javanese way of life. This study is paramount in understanding why Wédhatama is still relevant for some elements of Javanese society.
