Abstract

Sweetpotato weevil Cylas formicarius Fabricius is major obstacle in increasing of sweet potato production in various countries. Tuber damage due to C. formicarius causes yield loss up to 80%. This study aims to examine the integration control of C. formicarius in entisol, each control combination was composed of various components. The control integration was composed of various components of synthetic insecticide, application of entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana, weeding, turning of the stems, heap up, and cover mounds using plastic mulch. The study used a randomized block design, each treatment was repeated five times. The research was conducted at Kendalpayak experimental station from May to September 2017. The result showed that P5 with B. bassiana application five times, addition of 3 t/ha organic fertilizer, cover mounds by plastic mulch was most effective in suppressing of C. formicarius in endemic entisol.  The tuber weight at control combination (P5) was reached 23 t/ha or 56% higher than control combination of farmer cultivation (P1) was only 10 t/ha. The entisol land with an alluvial structure cracks easily during in the dry season, so that adults to penetrate the base of tubers and lay their eggs. The results of this study indicate that control combination of P5 can be recommended as a innovation control technology of C. formicarius in endemic entisol.

Abstract

Cocoa (Theobroma cacao) is one of the important commodities in Indonesia. The quality of cocoa beans has decreased during storage, one of which is due to the attack of Araecerus fasciculatus (De Geer). This pest attack can be overcome by fumigation that is safe for the environment through the use of essential oil. The study aimed to examine the mortality and repellent effects of kaffir lime leaves essential oil (KLLEO) to A. fasciculatus and to analyze the compound content of active fraction KLLEO using GC-MS. Research stages included maintenance and insect rearing, toxicity and repellency tests, fractionation, and analysis of active fraction compounds of essential oils. The study was designed using CRD with 6 treatments and 4 replications. The n-hexane fraction of KLLEO caused the highest mortality of A. fasciculatus adults after 72 hours of fumigation. The LD50 and LD95 values of the n-hexane fraction of KLLEO were 0.30 and 1.66 ml/l air, respectively. The dose at 1 ml/l air caused the highest mortality of A. fasciculatus adult by 73.75%. Examine using an olfactometer, KLLEO has high repellency against adult A. fasciculatus with the value of the repellency index reaching 100% at 1 ml/l air. The most dominant compound in the n-hexane fraction of KLLEO was the citronellal. Therefore, the KLLEO has some potential to be expanded as a botanical fumigant towards A. fasciculatus.

Abstract

Fruit flies (Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel)) are insect pests of many fruits and vegetables. Yield losses due to this pest can reach 100%, and many may be unaware that fruit flies are the trigger for several disease attacks on crops such as fungi and bacteria. This study aimed to identify the most appropriate preservation technique for morphological identification of B. dorsalis by image analysis. Images were taken with the Nikon DSF12 Trinocular Microscope. The methods used varied by trapping period (short-term and long-term) and types of preservatives (ethanol and propylene glycol). Specimens were obtained from Bandung and Sumedang Regency. Results demonstrated that ethanol-based preservation was the most appropriate to acquire the abdominal image of B. dorsalis obtained via short-term trapping, meanwhile a propylene glycol-based preservation was suggested for specimens trapped using longer-term methods.

Abstract

Deforestation has a negative impact toward ecosystem and diversity. Landuse change has been known to negatively impact insect like ant and beetle in Jambi Province. This research aims to study the diversity, abundance, and composition of the leaf beetle in the Bukit Duabelas National Park (TNBD) and Harapan Forest landscape. Insect sampling was carried out using canopy fogging method. Four core plots were determined in each land use (as replicates) and each plot consist of three as subplot. Insect was collected in 16 traps (size 1 m x 1 m) that was installed under plant canopy prior to fogging process. The collected sample was sorted and identified in the Biocontrol Laboratory, Plant Protection Department, Faculty of Agriculture, IPB University. Total of 1,040 individuals leaf beetles were collected, belonging to 6 subfamilies and 127 morphospecies. The result of this research showed that a different lanscape has no effect give impact to insect abundance. Different landuse however does significantly impact the abundance and diversity of leaf beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae).

Abstract

Continuous propagation of the fungus Beauveria bassiana on artificial media will cause a decrease in its virulence. The solution offered as an alternative to maintain the virulence of the B. bassiana fungus is the addition of chitosan to the growing medium with the right concentration. This study aims to determine the effect of the addition of chitosan at several concentrations on growth, development and virulence of B. bassiana. This research was designed using a completely randomized design with 6 treatments and 4 replications. The treatments used are P0 (control), P1 (chitosan 1 mg/ml), P2 (chitosan 2 mg/ml), P3 (chitosan 3 mg/ml), P4 (chitosan 4 mg/ml), and P5 (chitosan 5 mg/ml). The results showed that chitosan affected the growth and development of B. bassiana fungi, as seen in parameters of colony diameter and conidia viability. The highest colony diameter occurred in the P1 treatment that was 8.34 cm and the highest conidia viability also occurred in the P1 treatment which was 85.26%. The effect of chitosan on B. bassiana virulence can be seen in the parameters of mortality, mycosis, and mummification. The addition of a chitosan concentration of 1 mg/ml in the fungal growth medium has a good effect on the growth and virulence of B. bassiana.

Abstract

This checklist serves as a basic information based on compilation from published literatures, internet database and from specimens’ collection stored at Center of Insect Systematics Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. To date, this study compiled smaller arachnids (28 species) and Pseudoscorpiones (41 species) that had been recorded in Malaysia. Although smaller arachnid orders were concentrated at localities with average rainfall and humidity,  Pseudoscorpiones can be found at both wet and dry environments. More work is needed to determine the species diversity and distribution of these cryptic group.

Abstract

Information about fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae: Dacinae) diversity in Lombok island is still lacking. This study was aimed to determine the diversity and species composition of the Dacinae fruit flies as well as developed the identification key of fruit flies in Lombok island. The research was conducted in 6 locations i.e., Nature Park (NP) of Kerandangan, NP of Suranadi, Lemor forest, Gangga garden, Lingsar garden, dan Lemor garden, spread across the island of Lombok from March to June 2020. Each location consisted of 6 observation plots using the transect method as far as one kilometer with a distance between the plots of 200 m. Fruit flies were collected using a steiner type trap with different attractants i.e. namely methyl eugenol (ME) and cue lure (CL). Identification of fruit flies were carried out at the Plant Quarantine Laboratory, Balai Karantina Pertanian Kelas I Mataram. Overall 22 species from 210,267 individuals of fruit flies were collected with 4 dominance species were Bactrocera limbifera, B. caudata, B. carambolae, and B. dorsalis. The most abundant spesies was B. carambolae which comprises 47% of the total population. Based on 22 species that recorded in this research, the identification key of fruit flies in Lombok Island was constructed. A dichotomous key is provided that describes 2 genera, 4 subgenus, and 22 species of fruit flies. The identification key uses a morphological character matrix, by comparing several key morphological characters in determining species of fruit flies.

Abstract

Chrysanthemum cut flower is a popular flower that has economic values. Infestation of Macrosiphoniella sanborni (Gillette) on chrysanthemum cut flowers can reduce the aesthetics of the flower, cause economic loss, and impose restriction in the internasional trading. The aim of this research was to determine the effective dose of [60Co] gamma irradiation in controlling M. sanborni on chrysanthemum cut flower and to evaluate the effect on quality of chrysanthemum cut flower (Chrysanthemum morifolium cv. Jimba Lima). The research was conducted in several steps: collection and mass rearing of M. sanborni, relative toxicity test of [60Co] gamma irradiation against M. sanborni, sublethal dose test on adults, and evaluation of the effect on the quality of cut flower. The dosages used in relative toxicity and sublethal experiment were 50–200 Gy and 200–250 Gy. The results showed that the LD99 value of adult was 1,092.982 Gy. A sublethal dose test was performed because C. morifolium cv. Jimba Lima has radiotolerance with dose below 300 Gy. The effective dose of [60Co] gamma irradiation against M. sanborni was 200 Gy. Application of this dose on first instar nymph showed the survival development reached only until the third instar nymph and it reached the adult stage when applied on second, third, and fourth instar nymphs. Application on the adult stage showed that the aphids can still reproduce first progenies but only in a small number (5.35%). Application of 200 Gy did not have negative effect on the quality of chrysanthemum cut flower within 9 days.

Abstract

Bogor Botanical Garden (BBG) is a conservation site with various type of collections such as threatened palm species, including Pelagodoxa henryana Becc. which has been categorized as critically endangered species. During its development, some of the plants did not grow optimal due to insect pests attack. The purpose of the study was to identify insect pest species that attack the P. henryana in BBG. The method used was observation with purposive sampling on eight palms P. henryana in BBG then insects were collected and identified. The results showed that insect pest attacked young leaf and also unopened leaf. The insects hide between the leaves, causing young leaves became dry up then died. Based on species identification, two leaf beetles were found i.e., Brontispa longissima (Gestro) and Wallacea sp. (Coleoptera: Chrysomellidae).
