Abstract

This paper presents a highly efficient power transfer system based on a co-design of a class-E power amplifier (PA) and a pair of inductively coupled Helical coils for through-metal-wall power transfer. Power is transferred wirelessly through a 3.1-mm thick aluminum barrier without any physical penetration and contact. Measurement results show that the class-E PA achieves a peak power gain of 25.2 dB and a maximum collector efficiency of 57.3%, all at 200 Hz. The proposed system obtains a maximum power transfer efficiency of 9% and it can deliver 5 W power to the receiver side through the aluminum barrier.

Abstract

Development of a FACTS device model for mitigating voltage sag is presented. It deals with a static synchronous condenser (STATCON) to be used in the AC distribution networks. Simulation with the help of a commercial software Matlab/Simulink was explored to investigate its characteristics and performance during the voltage sag occurrence. The considered main cause of voltage sag was the starting of high capacity asynchronous motor. A voltage source inverter based on the phase-controlled thyristor components was implemented in this application to compensate the change in reactive power of the system. The concerns have been put on the influence of initial operation point and DC capacitance. The study results show the capability of D-STATCON model to reduce the consequence of voltage sag following the starting of high-power asynchronous motor in the distribution network. A fast response of the condenser work confirmed the desired performance.

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to extract the maximum power point at which the photovoltaic system can operate optimally. The system considered is simulated under different irradiations (between 200 W/m2 and 1000 W/m2), it mainly includes the established models of solar PV and MPPT module, a DC/DC boost converter and a DC/AC converter. The most common MPPT techniques that will be studied are: "Perturbation and Observation" (P&O) method, "Incremental Conductance" (INC) method, and "Fuzzy Logic" (FL) control. Simulation results obtained using MATLAB/Simulink are analyzed and compared to evaluate the performance of each of the three techniques.

Abstract

This paper presents the method of proportional resonant current controller strategy in inverter system application. In this study, the mathematical modelling of the controller is shown in detail. This is important for the modelling in Matlab Simulink. Nowadays, the decrement of power quality is easily found in this inverter system where inverter extensively used as interface circuits. To solve this problem, proportional resonant current controller is the solution. At resonant frequency, this controller has infinite gain which ensures a zero steady-state error in a stationary frame. This will result in minimized load current distortion as well as the harmonic contents. At the end, simulation result shows when using PR current controller, the unwanted harmonics injection are much reduced.

Abstract

The present paper deals with the development of a simulation model for predicting the performances of a solar photovoltaic (PV) system operating under current meteorological conditions at the site location. The proposed model is based on the cell equivalent circuit including a photocurrent source, a diode, a series and shunt resistances. Mathematical expressions developed for modeling the PV generator performances are based on current-voltage characteristic of the considered modules. The developed model allows the prediction of PV cell (module) behavior under different physical and environmental parameters. The model can be extended to extract physical parameters for a given solar PV module as a function of temperature and solar irradiation. A typical 260 W solar panel developed by LG Company was used for model evaluation using Newton-Raphson approach under MATLAB environment in order to analyze its behavior under actual operating conditions. Comparison of our results with data taken from the manufacturer’s datasheet shows good agreement and confirms the validity of our model. Hence, the proposed approach can be an alternative to extract different parameters of any PV module to study and predict its performances.

Abstract

This paper proposes the implementation of simple boost circuit incorporated in inverter fed Brushless DC (BLDC) motor drive to boost the performance of torque. BLDC motor becoming subtle because of its performance. But the motor performance is inferior due to the voltage source inverter fed operation of BLDC motor which initiates torque ripple during commutation. Here the usage of Switched Boost Inverter (SBI) which minimizes the storage elements (passive elements), more active element and introduces shoot through mode during commutation as like Z-source inverter.  The analyses of three phase switched boost inverter fed BLDC motor drive have been carried out. The performance of torque almost depends on the stator phase current of the motor. In BLDC motor during commutation interval, one phase loss its exact stator phase current hence it instigate ripple on the torque. The proposed method focuses two intentions to reduce the torque ripple. The first intension is to operate the BLDC motor at 180ᵒ electrical conduction mode, second intension is to introduce the shoot through interval to boost the dc link voltage so as to maintain the stator phase current control which leads to suppress the torque ripple during commutation.  The validation of the proposed SBI based BLDC motor control is demonstrated both by MATLAB/Simulink and Field programmable gate array (FPGA) controller-SPARRTAN III processor. The experimental results of the developed SBI based BLDC motor drive is working over a wide speed range with minimal torque ripple compared to the normal PWM based inverter control.

Abstract

Dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) is a series active filter device that is used to protect sensitive loads from power quality issues such as voltage sag, swell, harmonics or disturbances. This implies that the DVR is capable to mitigate power quality disturbances at load terminal. Harmonic is a major power quality problem polluting distribution network causing the end-user equipment to fail operating due to the occurrence of disturbances in voltage, current or frequency. This paper discusses on the DVR used as the proposed technique to mitigate the voltage sag and swell in a distribution network connected with energy storage system and mini-hydro turbine system.

Abstract

This paper confers an investigation of a space vector modulation based control strategy of induction motor using a three-level inverter for electric vehicle application. The proposed controller uses a simple v/f control with a novel SVPWM technique. A new method for region selection of SVPWM for a multilevel inverter is implemented for the closed-loop system. Previously the region selection procedure was not considered by most of the researcher in the literature for developing the PWM algorithm. This approach is based on some algebraic equations. The remarkable point here is that it is identical to all the remaining sectors. Hence calculation complexity reduces by making it a simpler implementation. This method can be applied to any number of levels. The potency of the proposed controller is validated through the MATLAB/SIMULINK environment. The performance of the overall system is inspected through transient and steady-state analysis. The neutral point balance of the 3L NPC inverter is established by adopting proper switching sequences.

Abstract

This paper presents the design and implementation of a closed-loop solar tracker system. The demand for clean energy sources has increased along with the rising demand for electrical energy and the increasing amount of environment pollution triggered by fuel consumption. Among these sources, solar energy is considered the most feasible given its wide availability and easy operation in different environments. The main purpose of this study is to maximize the generated photovoltaic power and reduce CO2 emissions by designing an efficient and low-cost solar tracking system. An aligned closed-loop solar tracker is designed and constructed to achieve the best accuracy. The proposed system shows more freedom in its movement to overcome the problems associated with the tilt of the frame-holder. A PIC microcontroller based on the Flowcode programming language is used, the position feedback is detected by using a photo-sensor, and the H-Bridge driver is used to control two DC motors. According to the experimental results, the proposed system shows significant improvements in efficiency compared with stationary solar tracking systems.

Abstract

This paper introduces the modelling of a novel three phase AC-AC converter with indirect use of a capacitor as DC voltage link. The proposed converter has high efficiency because it uses Space Vector PWM (SVPWM) technique at both rectificier and inverter stages to operate the pulse width modulation in IGBT switches. The novel converter is equipped with a power factor control to shape the rectifier input current waveform to be sinusoidal and to be in phase with the input voltage. To keep the DC voltage stable, the converter utilizes PI controllers. Simulations are conducted for output voltage from 120 to 300 Volts with output frequency ranging from 30 Hz to 60 Hz. The simulation results show that the converter is able to maintain stable the DC voltage and current. Furthermore, the model demonstrates the benefits of proposed converter in terms of acquiring high input power factor and sinusoidal current waveform at the output side of the inverter.
