Abstract

The objective of the project is to design various controllers for temperature control in Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR) systems. Initially Zeigler-Nichols, modified Zeigler-Nichols, Tyreus-Luyben, Shen-Yu and IMC based method of tuned Proportional Integral (PI) controller is designed and comparisons are made with Fuzzy Logic Controller. Simulations are carried out and responses are obtained for the above controllers. Maximum peak overshoot, Settling time, Rise time,  ISE, IAE  are chosen as performance index. From the analysis it is found that the Fuzzy Logic Controller  is a promising controller than the conventional controllers.

Abstract

Early fault diagnosis plays a very important role in the modern energy production systems. The wind turbine machine requires a regular maintenance to guarantee an acceptable lifetime and to minimize production loss. In order to implement a fast, proactive condition monitoring, ESPRIT method seems the correct choice due to its robustness in improving the frequency and amplitude detection. Nevertheless, it has a very complex computation to implement in real time. To avoid this problem, a Fast-ESPRIT algorithm that combined the IIR band-pass filtering technique, the decimation technique and the original ESPRIT method were employed to enhance extracting accurately frequencies and their magnitudes from the wind stator current. The proposed algorithm has been evaluated by computer simulations with many fault scenarios. Study results demonstrate the performance of Fast-ESPRIT allowing fast and high resolution harmonics identification with minimum computation time and less memory cost.

Abstract

Islanding operation in essence connotes isolating part of a power system not unlike distributed generation. This thesis puts forward fuzzy logic controller for inverter fed micro-grid in islanding operations which is assessed using hardware implementation. It’s assisted by power electronics which imparts the control and flexibility essential for the micro grid concept. A correctly designed controller guarantees that the micro grid can meet its utility’s demands. The efficacy and robustness is deliberated in the design of fuzzy system. The testing is performed by employing hardware components namelyATMEGA-328microcontroller, TLP250 opto-coupler and a MOSFET circuit. The test results demonstrate very good consistency and show noteworthy implications of the control of micro grid using inverters and fuzzy controllers.

Abstract

An adaptive fuzzy integral sliding-mode controller using nonlinear sliding surface is designed for the speed regulator of a field-oriented induction motor drive in this paper. Combining the conventional integral sliding surface with fractional-order integral, a nonlinear sliding surface is proposed for the integral sliding-mode speed control, which can overcome the windup problem and the convergence speed problem. An adaptive fuzzy control term is utilized to approximate the uncertainty. The stability of the controller is analyzed by Lyapunov stability theory. The effectiveness of the proposed speed regulator is demonstrated by the simulation results in comparison with the conventional integral sliding-mode controller based on boundary layer.

Abstract

This paper focuses on an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) controller based Shunt Active Power Filter (SAPF) for mitigating the harmonics of the distribution system. To increase the performance of the conventional controller and take advantage of smart controllers, a feed forward-type (trained by a back propagation algorithm) ANN-based technique is implemented in shunt active power filters for producing the controlled pulses required for IGBT inverter. The proposed approach mainly work on the principle of capacitor energy to maintain the DC link voltage of a shunt connected filter and thus reduces the transient response time when there is abrupt variation in the load. The entire power system block set model of the proposed scheme has been developed in MATLAB environment. Simulations are carried out by using MATLAB, it is noticed that the %THD is reduced to 2.27% from 29.71% by ANN controlled filter. The simulated experimental results also show that the novel control method is not only easy to be computed and implemented, but also very successful in reducing harmonics.

Abstract

In this paper, a Fuel cell (FC) / Photovoltaic cell (PV)/ Battery operated three phase Shunt Active power Filter (SAF) is proposed for improving the power quality at the utility side. Fuzzy based instantaneous p-q theory control is proposed for SAF. This SAF consists of Voltage Source PWM Converter (VSC) and a DC link capacitor supplied by a FC/PV/Battery. The filter provides harmonic mitigation with reactive power compensation and neutral compensation for loads at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC). A Single switch boost DC-DC converter connects the FC/PV/Battery with the VSC to maintain the load. The performance of the proposed SAF is tested in MATLAB / SIMULINK environment with Fuzzy logic controller (FLC). The controller maintains the DC link voltage based on the current reference generated by the p-q theory. The Hysteresis PWM current controller is employed to generate the gating pulses to the switches in VSC. The simulation results of the proposed SAF validate the effectiveness of FLC in power quality enhancement.

Abstract

Braking of three phase induction motors is required in many industrial applications. This paper introduces braking of three phase induction motors using particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique. The objective is to determine the optimum values of the applied voltage and frequency during braking to stop the motor in a certain time with minimum braking energy losses to limit any excessive thermal heating. The proposed technique is important and more useful in applications of repeated braking cycles. The results are compared with that obtained using plugging braking method and it's found that the proposed technique gives lower braking energy and shorter braking time. The braking energy losses with the proposed method are about 20% of the plugging braking energy losses with the same braking time. The proposed method determines the variation of optimal values of applied voltage and frequency to have a certain braking time of three phase induction motor at a certain load torque with minimum braking energy losses. The characteristics of the motor are simulated using SIMULINK/MATLAB.

Abstract

This paper presents the study of a variable speed wind energy conversion system (WECS) using a Wound Field Synchronous Generator (WFSG) based on a Fuzzy sliding mode control (FSMC) applied to achieve control of active and reactive powers exchanged between the stator of the WFSG and the grid to ensure a Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) of a wind energy conversion system. However the principal drawback of the sliding mode, is the chattering effect which characterized by torque ripple, this phenomena is undesirable and harmful for the machines, it generates noises and additional forces of torsion on the machine shaft. A direct fuzzy logic controller is designed and the sliding mode controller is added to compensate the fuzzy approximation errors. The simulation results clearly indicate the effectiveness and validity of the proposed method, in terms of convergence, time and precision.

Abstract

This paper presents a direct torque control is applied for salient-pole double star synchronous machine without mechanical speed and stator flux linkage sensors. The estimation is performed using the extended Kalman filter known by it is ability to process noisy discrete measurements. Two control approaches using fuzzy logic DTC, and neural network DTC are proposed and compared. The validity of the proposed controls scheme is verified by simulation tests of a double star synchronous machine. The stator flux, torque, and speed are determined and compared in the above techniques. Simulation results presented in this paper highlight the improvements produced by the proposed control method based on the extended Kalman filter under various operation conditions.

Abstract

This paper proposes a novel variable speed control algorithm for a grid connected doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) system. The main objective is to track the maximum power curve characteristic by using an adaptive fuzzy logic controller, and to compare it with the conventional optimal torque control method for large inertia wind turbines. The role of the FLC is to adapt the transfer function of the harvested mechanical power controller according to the operating point in variable wind speed.  The control system has two sub-systems for the rotor side and the grid side converters (RSC, GSC). Active and reactive power control of the back-to-back converters has been achieved indirectly by controlling q-axis and d-axis current components. The main function of the RSC controllers is to track the maximum power through controlling the electromagnetic torque of the wind turbine. The GSC controls the DC-link voltage, and guarantees unity power factor between the GSC and the grid. The proposed system is developed and tested in MATLAB/SimPowerSystem (SPS) environment.
