Abstract

Experimental and simulation work were performed to study the effects of shading for different strings inside photovoltaic (PV) panels under real outdoor environmental climate conditions for Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. The electrical characteristics of PV panel were measured by using the PV analyzer, while the simulations were performed by MATLAB. The effect of full cell shading were studied experimentally for each configuration of two or four bypass diodes and verified by theoretical modeling. The I-V and P-V curves for all cases were recorded to investigate the effect of bypass diodes in reducing shading losses under similar environmental conditions. Compared to design with fewer bypass diodes, inserting more bypass diodes (four diodes in our work) contributed to higher yield in performance of solar PV panels undergoing shading while taking in to account the cost of energy production. Compared to the case of two bypass diodes, applying four diodes can recover up to ~31% of non-shaded maximum power under different cell shading conditions.

Abstract

This paper presents a novel Stator Current based Model Reference Adaptive System (SC_MRAS) speed observer for high-performance Six Phases Induction Motor (SPIM) drives using linear neural network. The article aim is intended to improve performance of an SC_MRAS observer, which were presented in the literature. In this proposed scheme, the measured stator current components are used as the reference model of the MRAS observer to avoid the use of a pure integrator and reduce the influence of motor parameter variation. The adaptive model uses a two-layer Neural Network (NN) to estimate the stator current, which has been trained online by means of a Least Squares (LS) algorithm instead of uses a nonlinear Back Propagation Network (BPN) algorithm to reduce the complexity and computational burden, it also help to improve some disadvantages cause by the inherent nonlinearity of  the BPN algorithm as local minima, two heuristically chosen parameters, initialization, and convergence problems, paralysis of the neural network. The adaptive model of the proposed scheme is employed in prediction mode, not in simulation mode as is usually the case in the literature, this made the proposed observer operate better accuracy and stability. In the proposed observer, stator and rotor resistance values are estimated online, these values thereafter were updated for  the current observer and rotor flux identifier to enhance the accuracy, robustness and insensitivity to parameters variation for the proposed observer. The proposed LS SC_MRAS observer has been verified thought the simulation and compared with the BPN MRAS observer. The simulation results have proven that  the speed is estimated a consequent quicker convergence, do not need the estimated speed filter, lower estimation errors both in transient and steady state operation, better behavior in low and zero speed operation.

Abstract

The performance of PV panel is very much dependent on the amount of sun light as well as the temperature of the surrounding environment which normally hard to be predicted. The use of PV emulator in the investigation of solar inverter especially at a lab scale platform helps to mitigate the inconsistency factors due to this uncontrollable variation. This work discussed on the design and development of a PV emulator for the grid-connected quasi-Z-source inverter which has different topology and control method compared to the conventional voltage source inverter. The I-V characteristics of the PV panel is modelled from the commercially available product and through circuit analysis the relation between capacitor voltage control and the PV terminal voltage is established, thus realizing the MPPT operation. Results from both simulation and experimental verification demonstrated that the PV emulator successfully able to produce power for the inverter according to the requirement.

Abstract

This review presents various research and development, as well as design and performances of bifluid-based PVT systems. Moreover, the development of PVT system is a very promising area of research. PVT systems using in various applications, such as solar drying, solar cooling, water heating, desalination, and pool heating. With the recognition of the potentials and contributions of PV system, considerable research has been conducted to attain the most advancement which may produce reliable and sustainable PVT system. The cooling system’s design refers to the absorber design which mostly focuses on water and air-based PVT systems. An air-based system has been developed through different absorber configurations, air flow modes and single- or double-pass design. Bifluid-based PVT system is used to remove heat accumulated in a PV panel and reuses the waste heat (hot air and water) in an appropriate way. PV, thermal and PVT efficiencies of bifluid PVT systems were 6.6%-18.6%, 31%–90% and 60%-83%, respectively.

Abstract

Recently of the main topic of research is the sensorless vector control of induction motor drive, In this paper presents the predictive model reference adaptive system (PMRAS) rotor speed observer, This observer developed from the classical MRAS rotor flux scheme associated with predictive adaptation mechanism designed from the Finite Control Set Model Predictive Control (FCS–MPC) by using a search optimization algorithm for calculate the rotor position which guarantee a minimum speed tuning error signal at each sampling period. The effectiveness of the proposed observer proved with the simulation results, show high dynamic performance speed and position observed in sensorless vector control process at low and zero speed as well robustness against motor parameter variation with different loading conditions.

Abstract

Many researches have been dedicated to develop the induction motor drive control strategy used on the railway traction applications. In this paper we propose to investigate and to improve the electric locomotives by using a Field Oriented Control (FOC) strategy of induction motor drive. This induction motor can be powered by a five-stage neutral point inverter controlled by sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM) due to good quality for output voltage and The use of fast switches. Both conventional and improved locomotives are simulated in Matlab/Simulink and compared in open loop conditions   and closed loop conditions using IP controller, in term of torque response, current harmonic distortions and rotor speed response.

Abstract

Application of soft switching in DC-DC converter has achieved a remarkable success in power electronics technology in terms of reduction in switching losses, improve in power density, minimization of electromagnetic interference (EMI) and reduction in the volume of DC-DC converters. Quite a number of soft switching techniques had been reported in the past four decades. This paper aims at providing a review of various soft switching techniques, based on topology, the location of the resonant network, performance characteristics, and principles of operation. In addition, converters area of application, advantages as well as limitations are also highlighted.

Abstract

An inverter system applied with the PV source typically has a problem of lower input voltage due to constraint in the PV strings connection. As a countermeasure a DC-DC boost converter is placed in between to achieve a higher voltage at the inverter DC link for connection to the grid and to realize the MPPT operation. This additional stage contributes to losses and complexity in control thus reducing the overall system efficiency. This work discussed on the design and development of a grid-connected quasi-Z-source PV inverter which has different topology and control method compared to the conventional voltage source inverter and able to overcome the above disadvantages. Modelling and performance analysis of the voltage and current controller to achieve a good power transfer from the PV source, as well sycnchronization with the grid are presented in detail. Results from both simulation and experimental verification demonstrate the designed and developed grid-connected qZSI PV inverter works successfully equivalent to the conventional voltage source inverter system.

Abstract

The Nine-Switch Inverter(NSI) is a recently developed dual output converter. It can be used to drive two three-phase loads independently. As a substitute to two separate conventional voltage source inverters, the NSI has been, already, proposed in various industrial applications to reduce the numberof semiconductor switches and its associated energy losses and drive circuitry. On the other hand, the Direct Torque Control(DTC) is a robust control scheme of AC motors, which consist of selecting proper state vectors of a conventional voltage source inverter. The NSI, having a different working principle from the conventional voltage source inverter and taking into account the varying influence of active space vectors on motor’s torque and stator flux, a Direct Torque Control is suggested in this paper to, efficiently, drive two induction motors independently, while minimizing the torque and stator flux ripples of both motors. Simulations results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. In addition, application of this newly proposed control scheme in operation of an Electric Vehicule(EV) is demonstrated.

Abstract

This paper proposes a new optimal high level multilevel inverter with minimum number of components. This multi level inverter (MLI) is designed with series combination of basic units which can generate positive levels at output. DC source values applied for each basic unit is different with another. An H bridge is connected across proposed MLI for generating negative levels along with positive levels at output and that inverter considered as proposed high level optimal multilevel inverter. Single unit is responsible producing 21 levels. Therefore six units are connected in cascaded form to increase number of levels as 127 at output. Decrease in the number of power switches, driver circuits, and dc voltage sources are the improvement of the proposed MLI. Sinusoidal multiple pulse width modulation (SPWM) technique is implemented to produce pulses for turning ON switches according requirement. Low total harmonic distortion at output voltage or current production is major advantage of proposed module. The validations of proposed MLI results are verified through MATLAB/SIMULINK.
