Abstract

The five-level inverter has been used for many applications in renewable energy systems. Even though its harmonic distortion was lower than the conventional two-level inverter. The five-level converter has some disadvantages such as increasing power semiconductor, complex pulse width modulation control methods, and problem with the voltage balancing of the capacitor. This paper aims to propose a modified five-level inverter based on sinusoidal pulse width modulation using phase shifted carrier to enhancing the capacitor voltage balancing. This modified five-level inverter reduces the overall cost and the complexity of the pulse width modulator. Thus making the proposed control system highly simple. The performance and its controller were validated by means of standard laboratory equipments. The analysis, simulation and implementation result showed better performance of five-level inverter.

Abstract

This paper addresses a performance evaluation of maximum power point tracking techniques (MPPT) in a photovoltaic system. This research work finds its applications in photovoltaic systems producing electric power with a better energy efficiency, which will lead to an improved relationship between the cost and the amount of the produced power. The importance of this work resides on the one hand in the evaluation of the performances of the different MPPTs according to three criteria instead of one or two criteria in other works of the literature and on the other hand in the study of Four algorithms in one paper and their comparisons. This paper discusses the performance evaluation of the MPPT algorithms called P&O, Inc-Cond, Hill-Climbing and Fuzzy algorithms based simulation results and practical validation. The performances of these algorithms are evaluated according to the following criteria: The response time, the amplitude of the oscillations around the optimal point and the accuracy. The objectives in this article are summarized in the following points: (a) modeling the photovoltaic systems, (b) presenting and detailing each MPPT algorithm (c) presenting and discussing the simulation results in Matlab/Simulink and practical validation (d) evaluating the performance of each algorithm. This paper is completed by a summary on the areas of use for each algorithm and conclusions.

Abstract

This paper presents bridgeless single ended primary inductor (SEPIC) converter operated in continuous conduction mode (CCM). The converter used in the study offers a lesser conduction loss compared to the other bridgeless SEPIC converter.   In order to regulate the required output current and output voltage with high efficiency while achieving high power factor correction (PFC) at the input side, average current mode control (ACMC) is applied. The model is simulated using MATLAB/Simulink and it is found that the converter and the proposed control strategy provide a promising result. The preliminary results obtained from the experimental test-rig shows a good agreement as in simulation. The theoretical analysis of the proposed controller is verified on an output 100V to 300W prototype.

Abstract

In this paper, experimental results of 3-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) sensorless speed control are presented. To estimate the rotor position, a sliding mode current observer (SMCO) was implemented. This observer estimates the back emfs of the motor in the stationary reference frame using only the measured voltages and currents of the motor. These emfs were utilized to obtain the rotor position. The speed of the motor was calculated by differentiating the rotor position angle. The stability of the proposed SMCO was verified using Lyapunov method to determine the observer gain. The saturation function was adopted in order to reduce the chattering phenomenon caused by the SMCO. A vector control method was employed to achieve the sensorless drive system. The control application was developed in C/C++ language and implemented using the Texas Instruments TMS320LF2812 digital signal processor (DSP). This new processor enables intelligent control for motors. We used to test the drive the MCK2812 which is a professional development kit available from Technosoft Company. The theoretical finding is validated with experimental results that show the effectiveness of the real-time implementation.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijpeds.v4i3.5704

Abstract

This paper presents a MATLAB/SIMULINK model of two multi-level inverter topologies. Algorithms based on space vector modulation (SVM) technique are developed in order to conduct a comparative study on diode clamped five and seven level inverters. The scheme used to develop these control algorithms are based on symmetrical sequence because of the symmetry of the switching wave. Both topologies are simulated and analyzed using a squirrel cage induction motor. The results have showed that the best motor dynamic response with less harmonic distortion and torque fluctuations is obtained when seven-level inverter is employed.

Abstract

This paper recounts the design and construction of various controlling techniques for buck converter. If the designed controller for any converter is not proper which leads to high overshoot and steady state error, and its dynamic response varies with changes in load, especially at high load current conditions. The lead-lag controller for the converter  is desgined using classical control theory ,Bode Plot technique is used to examine the stability of the system.By using deravetive part of the PID controller on output signal instead of voltage error signal, this combination of control technique reduces the overshoot and settling time, and how the transient response will be affected if deravetive controller is in the forward path.

Abstract

A Field Oriented Control (FOC) strategy based on a 24-Sector Vector  Space Decomposition (24SVSD) technique used to control a Dual Three-Phase Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (DTP-PMSM) applied on electric ship propulsion prototype is presented in this paper. This machine is supplied by Dual Three-Phase Voltage Source Inverter (DTP-VSI). This study carried out on these multiphase machines has revealed that the large zero sequence harmonic current components on (z1, z2) subspace, constitutes major drawbacks; despite their advantages. The machine’s dynamic model is accomplished in three two-dimensional and orthogonal subspaces. In order to reduce more extra stator harmonic currents that produces losses, the current work is also concering of to consider the three different approaches for the sake of boosting the machine’s efficiency. Thus, the principle selection of the reference voltage vector and the time calculation method are presented in details. The proposed strategy effectiveness is validated by simulation results.

Abstract

This paper proposes design a robust power system stabilizer (PSS) considering less control energy using a genetic algorithm (GA). The structure of proposed PSS is a 1st-order lead-lag compensator, it is easy to implement in power system utility. In the design, system uncertainties are modeled by an inverse additive uncertainty. The performance, robust stability condition, and less control energy of the designed system are formulated as the objective function in the optimization problem. The GA is applied to solve an optimization problem and to achieve control parameters of proposed PSS. The performance and robustness against system uncertainties of the proposed PSS are investigated in the single-machine infinite bus system in comparison with a conventional PSS and a PSS designed by fixed-structure H∞ loop shaping. Simulation results show that with less control energy, the robustness and damping effect of the proposed PSS can be guaranteed against various operating conditions. Keywords: Control system design, operation and control of power systems, robust control application, less control energyDOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijpeds.v2i1.143

Abstract

This paper presents a stand-alone hybrid renewable energy system (SHRES) consisting of solar photovoltaic (PV), wind turbine (WT) and battery energy storage (BES) in an effort reduce the dependence on fossil fuels. The renewable energy sources have individual inverters and the PV inverter of the SHRES is operated using active and reactive power control. The PV inverter have two main control structures which are active power control and reactive power control and each contain a proportional integral (PI) controller. Accurate control of the PV inverter’s active power is essential for PV curtailment applications. Thus, this paper aims to enhance the performance of the SHRES in this work by optimizing the performance of the PV inverter’s active power PI controller parameters through the design of adaptive controllers. Therefore, an adaptive controller and an optimized adaptive controller are proposed in this paper. The performances of the proposed controllers are evaluated by minimizing the objective function which is the integral of the time weighted absolute error (ITAE) criterion and this performance is then compared with a controller that is tuned by the traditional trial and error method. Simulation results showed that the optimized adaptive controller is better as it recorded an error improvement of 42.59%. The dynamic optimized adaptive controller is more adept at handling the fast changes of the SHRES operation.
