Abstract

This study aimed at investigating how media depict corona virus through the use of metaphors in the headines and conceptualizing the metaphor by the use of mappings. The data were gained from the headlines of two English online media in Indonesia, The Jakartapost and Kompas.id published from March to May, 2020. The data analyses applied qualitative descriptive study through the framework of the Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) proposed by Lakoff and Johnson. The data were first selected from the headlines which were then analyzed and categorized to relevant conceptual metaphors through the bridge of mappings to understand and to characterize the relationship between two concepts (source and target domains) in the metaphorical process. The study found that the most used of conceptual metaphors of corona virus is CORONA VIRUS IS A WAR. Despite its controversial issue as to blow up people

Abstract

Additional material or practice is highly needed in language learning and teaching in order to progress as expected. However, its usage and delivery frequency may differ and to a certain extent may affect the language assessment for EFL students. This study outlines the effect of providing various and frequent additional writing practice to language assessment. The aim of the study is twofold, firstly, it is to identify the implication of adding more practice, aside from theprovided materials, to writing skill assessment, and secondly, to examine whether uniformity exists among the teachers in choosing the added practice and the frequency in providing it and how this uniformity influences the expected assessment. This study applied a qualitative method and used questionnaire, interview and lesson observation as the instruments. The result of the analyzed data showed that the various additional writing practice could well be one of contributing factors to the inconsistency in writing skill assessment for intermediate level EFL students. The data also showed that there was no uniformity among the teachers in choosing the additional writing practice and the frequency in providing it, which may also have resulted an implication in writing assessment.Agreement among teachers in creating and selecting a number of identical practice and sustaining the frequency in delivering it may propose a consistency in writing skill assessment.

Abstract

In Systemic Functional Language (SFL), texts are analyzed by their transitivity system; and for the process are well-known as transitivity process. Practically, text parsing takes much time, since the part of text should be parsed manually and analyzed partially. By optimizing UAM corpus tool, the parsing process will get maximum results. UAM concerns on manual as well as semi-automatic annotation because of its lack of accuracy using automatic annotation. In this research, the texts are crawled from The Jakarta Post news article, especially in the form of online data. Those data (texts) are generated by UAM in order to get transitivity properties. The data are taken from February to March which contain Covid-19 issues in Indonesia. The result shows that between the time periods from February to March, the transitivity process regarding to the issue of Covid-19 in Indonesia has changed. It especially refers to the three process; material, mental and verbal process. During that period, material process slightly decreases from 58.72% to 57.59%, which emerges an assumption that people in Indonesia start to decrease their physical activity in March. While in mental process, it significantly elevates from 5.03% to 7.59% which could be assumed that people, including government, tend to think about the issue more seriously. While in the verbal process, it grows by about 2% from 16.11% in February to 18.62% in March which leads to an assumption that people have spread out the issue or the news to the other.
