Abstract

Reconsidering the role of apologizing as one of fundamental aspects in speech act learner has become important nowadays. It is argued that acquiring apologizing speech act can build their attitude. The purpose of this study is analyzing semantic and pragmatic of Javanese apologetic speech act, especially with respect how Javanese apologetic speech act expression differ conceptuallyfrom English expression. In order to fi nd out the differences between Javanese apologetic speech act nuwun sewu”and English speech act sorry, I used the natural semantic metalanguage proposed by Wierzbicka (1987). Furthermore, I described some distinguishable features of Javanese culture as well. By using Blum-Kulka (1989) and her collaboration model, I analyzed Javanese apologyspeech act strategies found in several conversations and situations. The fi ndings of my study are the attitudinal meanings of nuwun sewu and sorry, as well as the illocutionary acts associated with the two expressions are different. My study further suggests that conceptualizing speech act expressions, using semantically simple words, may help second learners acquire the proper ways of using speechacts in the target language and culture.

Abstract

Deixis as one of pragmatic features appears in every kind of text including narrative text. Deictic elements hold inseparable relation between its textual meaning and its context. This study is aimed at examining deixis in the narrative texts in BSE English textbook’s “Developing English Competencies 1” for Senior High School Grade X and explaining how they are realized in different contexts. The study uses descriptive qualitative method with five narrative texts taken as the sample for analysis. The results show that the narrative texts use all kinds of deixis, with person deixis as the most frequently used one. Person deixis enables the narrative texts to focus on the characters and the actions. Deixis is highly context-dependent that it cannot be understood without considering the context. Therefore, in comprehending narrative texts, English learners cannot only rely on their vocabularies repertoire they need also to comprehend the whole context of the story.

Abstract

Javanese has been becoming fruitful sources of data especially in Pragmatic field. However, nobody has concerned the greeting strategies they employed. This study is aimed at investigating the greeting strategies employed by Javanese people in Mangunsari village, Semarang, Indonesia. The notion of greeting strategies has not got quite considerable attention by Pragmatic researcher since there are only few studies concerning them. As utterances and verbal communication should be interpreted based on the socio-cultural background, Javanese cannot be separated from the concept of Javanese culture like friendliness. As a result, the verbal communication they uttered might have more meaning than the said. Therefore, this study also attempts to trace the implicature they intent. This paper examines how greeting strategies are manifested and conveyed within the major framework of the Javanese culture. This study is about socio-cultural pragmatics in which utterances are discussed in relation to their situation and cultural background which support them. The data are in the form of dialogue between Javanese which does not show any different social status among the interlocutors. The data of this research were collected by recording and note taking (for the parts in which recording is not possible). The data are aimed at generating the strategies used by Javanese (in Mangunsari village, Semarang, Indonesia) to maintain harmony among the members. Finally, the data are examined from general theory of implicature and the Javanese culture concept (friendliness). This study provides important findings showing that Javanese tend to greet others by employing a particular way which differ from common ways of greeting. They employed the utterances to imply their friendliness as a harmony and relation maintenance and to avoid the sense of arrogant and individualistic. Keywords: greeting strategies, friendliness, implicature, harmony
