Abstract

For a long time, classical and evidential apologetics have been firmly established as a way of defending the Christian faith. However, postmodernism appears to criticize the use of absolute verification tools for faith claims. Nevertheless, James K.A. Smith and Alister McGrath see postmodernism as friend rather than foe, opportunity rather than challenge. Therefore, paying attention to important criticisms of the spirit of postmodernism will actually help the church to answer the demands of postmodernism itself. This article proposes an imaginative apologetics approach as a solution to answer this criticism. In contrast to classical/evidential apologetics, this apologetics tends to use imagination more than before in efforts to account for the Christian faith. When apologetics accepts dry accusations and seems to override existential aspects that actually dwell in humans, imaginative apologetics can be a proposed solution to avoid these accusations. Two implications emerge from this reasoning. First, in apologetic dialogues, an apologist must use more imaginative rhetorical tools. Second, the church must help listeners get an imaginative presentation of what it’s like to live as a Christian, by presenting them with stories of everyday Christian life. Thus, instead of the church using apologetics, the church is apologetics itself.

Abstract

Transhumanism is a cultural and philosophical movement that sees humans as having the right and morphological freedom to evolve towards a posthuman state by radically modifying and enhancing human nature and capacity using the latest technologies such as genetic engineering, robotics, artificial intelligence, and nanotechnology. The posthuman that transhumanism craves is the human condition impervious to degeneration, disease, and even death. The end goal is to live longer or even immortal to enjoy unlimited happiness. By observing the development of the transhumanist agenda, there are concerns from scholars in the interdisciplinary fields of science, technology, and theology that humanity will be transformed by technology or even become marginalized and extinct. This article aims to examine transhumanism from Christian anthropology, which includes three aspects: the origin and nature of man, the reality of human life, and solutions to human problems. The results of the study show that the promise of transhumanism regarding human evolution with morphological freedom and self-determination to strive for progress towards a posthuman state is unpromising to achieve because human nature, which has fallen into sin, tends to destroy or exchange good for evil. The agenda and optimism of transhumanism to completely remove degeneration, disease, and death from human life by using the latest technology is impossible to realize because all these realities are the impact of the fall of man into sin, which can only be overcome by divine means through redemptive work of Christ which carries out the transformation of soul and body holistically

Abstract

Trinity is a fundamental doctrine in the Christian faith. Though the word “trinity” never appears in the Bible, its truth is displayed throughout the entire writing of the Scripture. However, it does not mean that all people accept this truth. In the Indonesian context, whose major population is Islam, the idea of one God but three and three but one is very polytheistic. Muslims highly regard the concept of monotheism. Standing on this monotheistic truth, to them, the idea of Trinity is not just simply weird but must also be vigorously rejected. Observing the above two facts, the author sees the need for apologetic defense from those accusations. This article exerts to describes allegations concerning the theological and logical problems of the Trinity as well as providing adequate apologetic defense. This article aims to present an objective apologetic defense in the belief that the doctrine of Trinity is monotheistic (theological defense), and even though far surpassing the limited human reasoning, Trinity is not irrational (logical defense).

Abstract

Uncovering the Noble Character of Ruth out of Shadows: Applying Character Analysis in the Book of Ruth. This article is an effort to apply the character analysis in the book of Ruth that shows the excellence of Ruth and the response of the original readers. Character analysis was carried out using the method of Richard L. Pratt Jr., which includes the description of characterizations, characterization techniques, and characterization purposes, to investigate the characters of Naomi, Ruth, and Boaz as the three main characters in this book. These three characters are analyzed and compared to find the purpose of characterization and the reader’s response. Through this analysis, we can find that the author of the book of Ruth has a purpose to describe indirectly or subtly the noble character of Ruth in the shadows of her background as a Moabites and the other main characters, Naomi and Boaz. Through the reading of the book of Ruth, the first readers can evaluate their spirituality as God’s people because they find that there is a Moabite woman whose life is godlier than them. It also raises awareness that Israel’s God embraces all nations and that non-Israelites do not always negatively influence God’s people.

Abstract

Molinism has been gaining traction in various circles within the last few decades as one of the major models for reconciling divine sovereignty and human freedom among the Reformed, Arminians, open theists, process theists, and possibly more. Luis de Molina (1535-1600) was thought to popularize the idea that God’s so-called middle knowledge is an additional category within our typical twofold understanding of divine foreknowledge. Thus, middle knowledge exists between God’s natural knowledge and free knowledge to conceptualize three logical successions within the Godhead as he creatively decides to decree and actualize the world we see today. Through this somewhat ambitious project to contrast and defend Molinism against other positions, John Laing has written one of the most rigorous and comprehensive treatments of the doctrine of middle knowledge or Molinism. His work is exemplary in many ways, especially as an evangelical theologian who attempts to fill the gap within evangelical scholarships on Molinism.

Abstract

Social Ethics Discourse for Evangelicals: Getting to Know Reinhold Niebuhr's Thoughts through the Serenity Prayer. Social ethics is not a major topic that is often discussed among evangelical Christians. Therefore, arise assumption that evangelical Christians tend to be pessimistic about situations globally and avoid issues in social ethics. This article offers a discourse on social ethics for evangelical Christians by introducing Reinhold Niebuhr’s thoughts. The serenity prayer is used as a method to frame Niebuhr’s thoughts. In Niebuhr’s view, man has a paradoxical reality. He is a sinful man who has limitations in exercising the pure love that Jesus taught. On the other hand, he is an image of God who can self-transcendence and think creatively to create newness in his life. Responding to this paradoxical reality, Niebuhr gave suggestions to build a realistic (dialectical) social ethics foundation that does not fall into an attitude of excessive optimism, let alone fall into an attitude of pessimism that tends to be fatalistic.

Abstract

Building Trinitarian Explanations and Ethical Attitudes Towards COVID-19 as Natural Evil. COVID-19 is a natural evil, namely an evil caused by a natural process that is not functioning properly because of the fall of humans into sins. The existence of COVID-19 as a natural evil will raise the question of why natural evil can exist, what is the purpose of natural evil, and how does this natural evil ends (the metaphysical problem of evil)? Another question is how the response or the attitude of the believers to the existence of this natural evil (the moral problem of evil)? The author tries to answer these two problems by using a trinitarian explanation of Christian metanarrative, namely from the point of God’s providence, the work of Jesus Christ on the cross, and the work of the Holy Spirit in the church. God in his sovereignty permits the natural evil of COVID-19 for the greater good. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, triumph over evil through His ministry on earth and on the cross. The Holy Spirit, sent by the Father and the Son, comforts and empowers the church to continues the mission of Jesus Christ.

Abstract

The Spiritual Journey of Homo Viator: A Comparative Study of Serat Jatimurti with the Parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11–32). The concept of spiritual journey is known in various religions. Likewise, the concept of Homo Viator or humans who made the trip. This paper examines the concept of a spiritual journey in Serat Jatimurti, one of the Kejawen texts, and compares it with the narrative in the Bible, namely the parable of the prodigal son. This study aims to understand the voice of the local spirituality to facilitate the delivery of the gospel to this community. By using cognitive linguistic analysis, the results show some similarities and differences in the Christian view of the spiritual journey and the role of humans in it compared to the Kejawen view. The similarities that exist will increase understanding and appreciation of each spirituality work and become a common ground that provides an effective “bridge” for sharing the gospel. The differences that exist can be an attraction to show the uniqueness of the gospel. With this understanding, this study can provide provisions for Christians in communicating the good news of God’s grace in Christ Jesus to the followers of Kejawen spirituality.

Abstract

Numbers 5:11–31: Sotah as a Cultural Breakthrough in the Ancient Near East. Numbers 5:11–31 could be interpreted as a kind of sexism and repression to women. In the Mishnaic tradition, the passages indeed are being understood and developed in such a manner. From tractate Sotah in Mishnah, the suspected adulterous wife indeed is ashamed and treated as a prostitute. This article seeks to present another perspective on the passage. This article uses the sociological study method to identify the sociological problems alleged against the passage based on the explanation of the Sotah tractate in the Mishnah. Afterward, the inferior position of women in the ancient Near East will be explained as a cultural context to understand the passage better. Finally, considering this cultural context and comparing the Sotah ritual with the common rituals in the ancient Near East, this article argues that Numbers 5:11–31 could be seen as a cultural breakthrough to protect women, which are considered marginalized.

Abstract

This article explores the church cantatas of German composer J.S. Bach (1685–1750) as models for how we can think about the practice of faithful worship in the Christian church today. The article begins with an overview of Bach’s vocation as a church musician, in which he served in various contexts throughout his life. The article focuses on Bach’s final calling as a church musician, as music director for the town of Leipzig for the final 27 years of his life. It explains the context of the main Sunday and feast day worship service in Leipzig, with particular attention to the role of the church cantata in this service. The article then presents a general overview of the characteristics of Bach’s church cantatas before exploring in-depth liturgy, text, and music in one particular example, Cantata 104, Du Hirte Israel, höre. It concludes by proposing that a study of J.S. Bach’s church cantatas can teach us lessons of three kinds—practical (how we do church music), creative (how we create art), and spiritual (for ourselves and our congregations)—that we can apply in our churches today.
