Abstract

Poverty is a latent and global social problem in Indonesia. The outbreak of the Covid-19 that hit the world and Indonesia in early 2020 resulted in an economic recession in Indonesia. In this social context, the evangelicals in Indonesia have not taken this problem seriously. Despite that ignorance regarding the issue of poverty, there have been significant changes in the Lausanne Movement, which is reflected in three documents from this movement, Lausanne Covenant, Manila Manifesto, and The Cape Town Commitment. Considering this background, the authors use the point of view of the Lausanne Movement to invite the Indonesian evangelicals to see the context of poverty as an essential factor that must be included in their theological commitment. Furthermore, this article is meant to serve as a theological trigger for the evangelicals in Indonesia to reconsider the significance of their role in the public sphere, particularly in addressing the issue of poverty. Finally, the article’s contribution is three theological points that might be proposals for the Evangelicals in Indonesia to carry out God’s holistic mission for social transformation in the society. The authors propose three theological principles based on the three documents of the Lausanne Movement to inspire Evangelicals in Indonesia to carry out God’s mission for the holistic transformation of society; that is, God’s mission is understood in terms of the wholeness of God’s creation, focused on humanity, and made possible only by the redemptive act of Jesus Christ.

Abstract

Ideally, a pastor’s child is a role model in religious life. However, a pastor’s child has some religious problems rooted in parental influence. This research aimed to determine whether each parenting style correlated with the religiosity of a pastor’s child. This research hypothesizes that there was a significant correlation between the perceptions of authoritarian parenting, authoritative parenting, permissive parenting, and uninvolved parenting with the religiosity of adolescent pastors’ children. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling. As many as 172 Indonesian pastors’ children aged 13 to 17 years old participated in this study. The measuring instrument used were the Parenting Style measure and the Centrality of Religiosity (CRS). The research method is quantitative correlational research. The research results indicate no correlation between each type of parenting style and religiosity. As much as 76.7% of the pastors’ children were at the religious level, followed by 14% who were not religious and 9.3% were very religious. The research implied that the influence of religiosity in the life of the pastors’ children is not due to their fathers’ parenting styles. This study provides several practical implications. The pastor’s family (especially the father) can still apply authoritative parenting because it has positively impacted a child’s development and personality. The church needs to build an authentic faith community to support the development of healthy spirituality and religiosity for adolescent pastors' children.

Abstract

Since the sixteenth-century Reformation, literal interpretation of the Bible has been deemed the best hermeneutical method to unearth the biblical writers’ original meaning. For the Reformers, allegorical interpretation was denigrated for reading an extraneous, or spiritual, meaning into any text. Although Augustine was among the first who champions a literal interpretation of the Scripture—as he outlined in his De doctrina christiana—until recent decades, Augustine is still being perceived as inconsistent in following his hermeneutical method as it is attested in his interpretation of the Good Samaritan. In his interpretation, Augustine seems to have allegorized the parable, thus his method was accused of being inconsistent. Is it really the case? This article attempts to contest such an accusation by showing that Augustine’s method of interpretation cannot simply be categorized as either entirely literal or allegorical. Augustine never professes as a literalist, an exegete who only applies what is now known as a historical-critical method. On the other hand, he did not recklessly legitimate the application of allegorical reading to any text. Taken as a whole, Augustine’s hermeneutics revolves around a complex dialectic of regula dilectionis (the rule of love) and regula fidei (the rule of faith) that allows both interpretations to be considered to be true.

Abstract

In his speech at Miletus (Acts 20:18–25), Paul talks about himself repeatedly. Such emphasis on the character of Paul inevitably raises some questions regarding the function of the emphasis. This article attempts to understand the function of the emphasis on the character of Paul in the Miletus speech. The method used to analyze the speech is the classical rhetorical method. Classical rhetoric follows the convention of ancient Greco-Roman rhetoric to examine how a speech persuades the audience to act according to what the speaker intends. In studying the Miletus speech, the author will investigate several elements from classical rhetoric, such as the rhetorical invention, with particular discussion to ethos (character), pathos (emotion), and logos (the logic of the argumentation), the rhetorical species, the rhetorical arrangement, and the rhetorical effectiveness. The main argument of this article is that the emphasis on Paul’s character functions as the basis for the accountability of Paul’s ministry and the basis for his exhortation to the elders of the Ephesian church.

Abstract

William Lane Craig has written an impressive apologetic book on the topic of the historical Adam. This book is comprehensive and thought-provoking. The theological, scientific, and philosophical argumentations presented in this book are enormous. Theologically, Craig from the very beginning has some fundamental commitments that he wants to defend. He is frank in acknowledging that it is impossible to start from a neutral ground, and I concur. But his theological commitments set him on a quest in approaching the topic by finding evidence for the plausibility of a historical Adam. Scientifically, a skeptical scientist would be very concerned about Craig’s ability to avoid confirmation bias as he evaluates various data to support his arguments, given his theological commitments. Philosophically, since this work is an apologetic exercise to create a case of plausibility for a historical Adam rather than an attempt to prove the existence of the historical Adam, readers may find this either very rewarding or terribly disappointing. Though the case of plausibility is important, it will not convince anybody who does not already believe in the historical Adam. Overall, as a work in theology and science, Craig demonstrates what needs to be done as a ground-clearing exercise before constructing a systematic theology that engages both the scriptures and science. I encourage theologians who want to be Biblically and scientifically relevant to take up the quest as Craig did in this work, knowing well the challenges that lie ahead.

Abstract

Not all social justice teachings are social justice according to the teaching of the Bible. The case in point is the teaching of critical theory on racism (Critical Race Theory or CRT). This teaching that nowadays has a strong influence over universities in the United States promotes widely concepts such as systemic racism, social binary, and intersectionality, which has actually caused a social rift marked by never-ending racial prejudice. From the biblical point of view, the critical theory view of racism contains social consequences that harm society at large. It has taught a social mindset that runs counter to the biblical teachings on social justice. After discussing the historical background of CRT and the basic tenets of CRT, I will then provide an evaluation of CRT from the biblical perspective by observing its starting point, its view of the root cause of racism, and the primary solution that it offers.

Abstract

The word “person” is generally used to refer to the existence of both humans and God. For humans, being a person means being able to think logically, have self-awareness, make free choices, and therefore be recognized morally and legally. The Christian faith believes in God as a Divine Person. The Dogma of the Trinity teaches faith in God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Three Persons of one nature. Christological dogma teaches that Jesus is a Person who has both divine and human natures. However, what is a person? Specifically, what is the Divine Person? The answer to those questions is found not in the Bible but in the philosophical and theological tracts. This article presents Richard of Saint Victor’s argument on the Divine Person. In his De Trinitate, he sees that the definition of the Divine Person can explain the mystery of the Trinity. Richard borrows this existing understanding, especially from that of Boethius. However, he also offers novelty, which is still relevant today, namely the Trinitarian God as a Divine Person with summa caritas, perfect co-love that is unselfish, non-exclusive, and embraces diversity.

Abstract

This study focuses on the relationship between the doctrines of the Incarnation and the Ascension of Jesus Christ, which often does not receive adequate attention in contemporary theology. The problem of separating the two doctrines is solved by re-examining the doctrine of the hypostatic union of Christ in the Lutheran and Calvinist traditions. Analytical and comparative approaches to the two traditions are undertaken to clearly show the tensions that arise and the possibility of imaginatively and faithfully linking the Incarnation and the Ascension. The study of these two models is furthered by comparing the two contemporary responses of the two traditions, one by Thomas Torrance and another by Niels Gregersen, that results in two ways of understanding Ascension, both as a reversal and as an extension.
