Abstract

This article reports the findings from an experimental pretest-posttest control group design conducted by using open-ended approach with Logan avenue problem solving (LAPS)-Heuristic model to investigate students? mathematical problem solving and reasoning abilities. The study involved 88 grade-10 students from SMA in Bandung. The instrumens of this study are mathematical problem solving test and mathematical reasoning test. By using SPSS 2.0.0 and Microsoft Excel 2013, the study found the open-ended approach with Logan avenue problem solving (LAPS)-Heuristic was able to improve students? mathematical problem solving and reasoning abilities better than that of conventional approach. Students? mathematical problem solving and reasoning abilities were classified as mediocore. Furthermore, the study found there was medium correlation between mathematical problem solving and reasoning abilities.

Abstract

The ability of mathematical communication is very important for prospective students of mathematics teachers, in order to be able to communicate their mathematical ideas both orally and in writing to others clearly, precisely and effectively. Therefore, prospective students of mathematics teachers need to be equipped with mathematical communication skills when taking the lecture through a student-centered lecture model and utilizing the ever-evolving information technology and communication, so this research aims to improve student?s  mathematical communication skills through Jigsaw learning model assisted by media presentation powerpoint accompanied visual basic applications. This research is a kind of quasi experimental research conducted on a second-year student of Mathematics Education Study Program of University of Timor in 2015/2016 academic year. Data collection techniques that is used are test of mathematical communication skills. While the data analysis technique that is used is the one sample t test, two sample t test, and effect size test. The results showed that student?s mathematical communication skills taught by Jigsaw learning model with powerpoint presentation media along with visual basic applications better than the student?s mathematical communication skills taught by conventional learning model with the size of the effect size in the big category that is 0.92.

Abstract

The objective of the present research is to determine whether there is or not the effect of Quantum Teaching learning model on class- and school type-based portfolio assessment mode and its interaction effect on the mathematical problem solving ability of students in both elementary schools and madrasah ibtidaiyahs in Indramayu.The research method used was an experimental method with a 2x2 factorial design. Learning method, assessment mode, and school type were the treatment variables, and mathematical problem solving ability was respond variable. The research sample was grade-V students of SDs Karang Anyar I & II and grade-V students of MI PUI and Al-Irsyad of Indramayu selected by a cluster random sampling. The analysis technique used was two-way ANAVA to test both main effect and interaction effect. From the research result it was concluded that (1) the elementary school student group treated with Quantum Teaching learning model with class-based portfolio assessment mode was more effective in enhancing mathematical problem solving ability than madrasah ibtidaiyah group, (2) the students group treated with Quantum Teaching learning model with display portfolio assessment mode was more effective in enhancing mathematical problem solving ability than the student group treated with document portfolio assessment mode. It was suggested that Quantum Teaching learning model with a display portfolio assessment mode should be made as a learning model prioritized in mathematics learning in schools.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of perception toward math, ability of understand of symbols, mastery of basic concepts, and learning motivation toward the mastery of instructional materials of mathematics. The sample of study consisted of 181 Junior High School math teacher. Data were gathered using questionnaires and tests. Data were analyzed using path analysis with Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The perception toward math as exogenous variable. The ability of understand of symbols, mastery of math basic concepts, and math learning motivation as exogenous or endogenous variable depend on the path diagram. The endogenous variables is the mastery of mathematics instructional  materials. The finding showed that: (a) perception toward math have positive direct effect toward ability of understand of math symbol (?21=0,63); mastery of math basic concepts (?31=50); math learning motivation (?41=0,38); and  mastery of math instructional  materials (?y1=0,21); (b) ability of understand of math symbol  have positive direct effect toward mastery of math basic concepts (?32=0,23); math learning motivation (?42=0,27); and mastery of math instructional  materials (?y2=0,35); (c) mastery of math basic concepts have positive direct effect toward math learning motivation (?43=0,26) and to mastery of  instructional  materials of math  (?y3=0,24); the last (d) math learning motivation have positive direct effect toward mastery of math instructional  materials (?y4=0,24).

Abstract

This study aims to determine whether or not a significant relationship between the readiness of learning and students' achievement in Calculus. This study was conducted in the odd semester of the academic year 2016/2017. The population in this study is the students of Informatics Engineering, University of Darussalam Gontor who took calculus course consisting of 50 people. Data collection in this research using questionnaire and documentation method.The research instruments used are questionnaire.  Techniques of analysis data  used are Product Moment correlation and simple linear regression analysis with prerequisite analyses those are normality and linearity test applied to know the influence of readiness study toward the students' achievement in Calculus course. The analysis result of Product Moment correlation show that the coefficient of readiness is 0.808 with significance score 0,00. This means that there is a positive and significant correlation between the readiness of learning and the students' achievement in the Calculus course. While the results of Linear Regression analysis shows that determination coefficient is 0.652. It means that the readiness of study gives an effect of 65,2% on the students' achievement in Calculus course.

Abstract

This paper explains about the analysis of validity of abstract algebra teaching materials based on abductive-deductive strategy which is the first stage on research and development study, expert judgement. The instrument used in this research is validation sheet consisting of five aspects of the assessment, namely the feasibility of the material aspect, the feasibility of the language aspect, the feasibility of the presentation aspect, the feasibility of teaching effect on the student learning process, and the feasibility of the overall display aspect. Validator involved in this research is four experts in mathematics education. The data of this research are analyzed descriptively. The result of this research shows that 80% of eligibility criteria of the material aspect have been fulfilled are categorized as very good (4.21), 90% of language aspect eligibility criteria have been fulfilled and categorized excellent (4.81), 85% of the presentation aspect eligibility criteria have been fulfilled and categorized as very good (4.50), 80% of the criteria for the effect of teaching materials on the students' learning process have been fulfilled as very good category (4.25), and 80% of eligibility criteria of the overall display aspect have been fulfilled and categorized as very good (4.25). Based on these data, 85% of the criteria for the assessment of the feasibility of Abstract algebra teaching materials based on the abductive-deductive strategy have been fulfilled, categorized as very good (4.35), and suitable for use in learning.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the low ability of students' mathematical problem solving. The purpose of research to determine the effect of Problem Based Learning (PBL) model of learning to improve students' mathematical problem solving abilities. This research was conducted at SMP Alijtihad II Kutabaru Tangerang Regency. The research method used is quasi experiment with design of non equivalent control group design. Sampling was done by using purposive sampling technique, student of class VIIIB as experiment class using PBL model and class VIIID students as control class with conventional method. The instrument used is a test to measure the ability to solve mathematical problems in the form of a description. Test instrument data were analyzed using the t-test and the Mann-Whitney U Test. Based on the result of calculation using t-test at 0.05 significance level, obtained tcount ? ttable (3,3841 ? 1,9966), so that PBL learning model can influence student's mathematical problem solving ability. The Mann-Whitney U Test showed that Zhitung ? Ztable (2.82 ? 1.92) thus enhanced mathematical problem-solving abilities in the class using the PBL model better than the conventional method. The improvement of students' highest mathematical problem solving abilities in the PBL class is on the indicators of planning the completion, whereas in the conventional class is on the indicators understand the problem

Abstract

The purpose of this study are to investigate and to describe the gain of students? spatial ability through Geometry teaching and learning by using a dynamic geometry software, Cabri 3D. This study was a quasi experimental research with not equivalent control group design. Direct instruction was implemented in control group otherwise Geometry teaching and learning with using Cabri 3D was implemented in experimental group. The population of this study are all of the eight grade of junior high school students in one of the SMP Negeri in Padangsidimpuan City. The sample of this study were two groups of eighth grade. The sample has been choosed with using purposif sample technique. The instruments of this study were spatial ability test, quationere, observation sheet and interview. The test was analysed quantitatively and non test was analyzed qualitatively in order to answer the  the hypotesa, the gain of students? spatial ability who has studied and lerant with using Cabri 3D is better than direct instruction.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the level of students' mathematical creative thinking ability in solving open-ended problems in discrete mathematics courses. This research uses descriptive qualitative method. The population in this research is the third semester students of Mathematics Education UMT. The sample was taken by norm referenced evaluation technique that is students in semester III-A3 who have high, medium and low mathematical ability. The instruments used include creative thinking ability tests, observation sheets and interview guides. The result of data analysis shows that the students with the category of creative mathematical thinking level with the percentage of respondents is 84.61%, the category of mathematical creative thinking level is very low with 12.82% percentage, the level of creative creativity level is not creative with 2.56% percentage. From the result, we get the average category of students' mathematical creative thinking ability in the third semester-A3 is 67,94 with medium category level.

Abstract

Pola pikir zaman sekarang yang menuntut segala sesuatu menjadi serba cepat dan instan sering kaliterbawa oleh siswa di sekolah. Ketika mengerjakan soal, siswa akan merasa puas ketika merekasudah menemukan jawabannya. Entah jawabannya benar atau tidak, sangat jarang ditemui siswayang kembali mengecek pekerjaan mereka. Di dalam proses pembelajaran pun, siswa dinilaikurang mampu dalam menganalisa kelemahan dan kelebihan yang dimilikinya untuk dapatmemaksimalkan proses belajar. Mengerjakan seadanya yang penting selesai seringkali menjadislogan para siswa saat ini. Padahal kemampuan menganalisa kelemahan maupun kelebihan yangdimiliki adalah kemampuan yang penting, khususnya dalam belajar matematika. Kesadaran akankelebihan dan kekurangan ini dinamakan kesadaran metakognisi. Dalam belajar matematikaketerampilan ini perlu dikembangkan. Untuk itu artikel ini akan membahas mengenai pembelajaranmatematika dengan menggunakan pendekatan keterampilan metakognitif.
