Abstract

This article discusses famous short story by Richard Connell entitled The Most Dangerous Game. It seek to explore themeaning of main characters’ existence from philosophical perspective. The finding of this article is that both main characters (Zaoffand Rainsford) each represent the concept of bad faith and authentic in search of their existence. This short stories itself alsorepresents the importance of existence/survival facing the reality of hunting and being hunted.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan jenis-jenis penggunaan majas didalam lagu Sami Yusuf pada Album Wherever You Are. Bersadarkan pengguanaan majas didalam lirik lagu Sami Yusuf pada albbum tersebut, maka peneliti mengetahui jenis-jenis majas, makna tersirat, dan majas yang dominan didalam lirik lagu Sami Yusuf pada album Wherever You Are. Pada dasarnya, majas memiliki beberapa tipe yaitu; Figures of tropes, Figure of Speech, Figure of Sound. Penelitian ini terfokus pada penggunaan majas berdasarkan jenis tipe tropes. Majas tipe tropes terdiri dari majas; Metafora, Simile dan Personifikasi. Data dalam penelitian ini adalah dokumen dari lirik lagu Sami Yusuf pada album Wherever You Are. Dalam album Wherever You Are terdapat 12 lagu. Hanya lagu yang menggunakan bahasa Inggris yang dijadikan sampel dalam penelitian ini. Lagu-lagu tersebut adalah “Wherever You Are, Without You, You Came To Me, Give The Young A Chance, Trials Of Life, Worry Ends, Fragile World, In Every Tear He Is There, Make Me Strong”. Sedangkan metode dalam penelitian ini adalah metode pada dengan teknik Intra Lingual. Dari hasil penelitian ini terdapat metafora, 6 simile, dan 5 personifikasi.

Abstract

This research is aimed to describe the way English teachers of SMA 4 Solok implement genre based approach in teachingwriting. This research also investigates the problems found by the English teachers in implementing it and examines how theyovercome those problems. The findings of this research show that the teachers have not implemented genre based approach inteaching writing optimally. Lack of comprehension about the basic principles of genre based approach has been the main cause. Theteachers experienced in familiarizing grammar and vocabulary to the students. It is hard for them to find appropriate materialswhich are close to their life. This study was descriptive qualitative research which was conducted in SMA 4 Solok.

Abstract

The History behind Badano Grand Mosque” is the history of an old mosque in Pariaman-West Sumatera. It is one of important information that needs to be shared to listeners as source of sharing information. There are a lot of old mosques still exist nowadays in West Sumatera but Badano Grand Mosque still has some interesting and uniques stories that make people in Pariaman are very proud of it. The radio feature of History behind Badano Grand Mosque will be able to attract a lot of tourists to visit this place. There are three procedures in making this project are conducted: Pre-production, Production, and Post-production. The main point of this project is production process. In production stage, there are some steps that were done such as doing interview with informants, choosing the insert, writing the script and recording the voice. The result of this project is an English script with 750 words.

Abstract

Communication occurs when one can express his/her opinion, thought, idea on people, things and situations. Opinion-related meanings in language are regarded as resources of evaluation or appraisal in language. Not necessarily good or bad in a moral sense, attitude accompanies the language utterance every person utters. As one kind of appraisal resources, attitude plays an important role in the expression of interpersonal meanings of language. Attitude refers to a way that you behave towards someone or in a particular situation, especially when this shows how you feel.The aims of this study are to analyze five advertisements in terms of content and to look deeply into the language employed in the discourse of advertisement as well as to find out the Appraisal elements used by Thailand advertisers especially to promote their product and reach the target. In This study, it is found that judgment and affect are appraisal element that most used in Thailand Advertisement because judgment is used to evaluate human behavior towards the product, and affect is used to evaluate the benefit or advantage in the product.

Abstract

Teaching mathematics and science in English has been a hot topic in the academic amospheres such as at schools, universities, and research centers. Teaching mathematics and science in English, in this context, is the teachers’ use of English as amedium of instruction in delivering the content subjects: mathematics, biology, chemsitry and physics. In particular, teachers use English in order to open classes/greet students, review previous topics, inform topic(s) to be learned, ask questions, answer questions, explain concepts, give directions, and do parting, all of which are embodied in words, phrases and sentences. However, these classroom activities might not be easily accomplished as teachers’ English skills are not well prepared. Since they are not the English specialists, they likely use strategies in their classroom communication with their students. They use strategies in order to make their messages comprehensible to students. Their “language” (words, expressions, phrases, and sentences) should be simple and understandable so that students can figure out what is presented and taught easily. This paper is intended to report a case study on (1) types of communication strategies employed by the teachers in teaching mathematics, chemistry, and biology in English; and (2) why they use such kinds of communication strategies in teaching mathematics, chemistry, and biology in English. The data obtained from observations (through videotaping), interviews, and questionnaires indicate that the teachers deploy several communication strategies with different reasons in teaching

Abstract

One form of city marketing that is currently developing is the provision of city image or city branding. Brands can have 6 levels of understanding namely attributes, benefits, cultural values, personality, and users. Cultural values are very different, especially around socially embedded issues such as status, gender, family, ethics, and customs. City branding helps influence "transfer of value" by establishing a relationship between what culture sees as a desired city and a particular product. This research is a study of the city branding of Padang city or a brand that is considered to belong to Padang City, namely "Padang Your Motherland", "Serenity of Minangkabau", and "Padang Taste". To what extent does three brand of  padang city  influence consumer awareness of the values of Minangkabau culture that is dominantly adopted by the people of Padang City? Semiotic analysis and personal interviews were used to answer this research question. Some consumers are less aware of the commercial objectives of these three city branding. They don't seem to know much about the intentions of city branding makers "to play with their consciousness".

Abstract

The children language aacquisition is influenced by the surrounding environment. The data were collected from preschool children. The conclusion of the research is children learned things beyond vocabulary and grammar. They are able to use language in many social contexts. The movies, which they watch, also influence their language acquisition. It can be seen from the use of words, phrases, and sentences from movies. Then, they imitate the words, phrases, and sentences in it. In addition, the child also may generalize of it. It is because of their limitations.
