Abstract

This research analysed the interpretation of metaphor ciphering ideal concept of anak gadih (girl) in Malam Bainai ritual in Minangkabau. This research was qualitative research by means of semiotic analysis. The interpretation of metaphor was conducted by analysing the vehicle-topic mapping focused on observing the relational and referential aspects of the sign in the metaphor as a complex sign. The observation of relational and referential aspects was conducted by using Danesi-Perron’s metaphor theory (1999) and Peirce’s trichotomy model. The results of this research showed that the interpretation of metaphor is closely related to the vehicle (representamen)-topic (object) mapping deciphering cultural wisdom messages (interpretant). The representamens represent the values of cultural wisdom through their functions, characteristics, benefits, and unique conditions.

Abstract

Tambo is a historical literary work that contains the origins of the ancestors and customs of the Minangkabau people. One of the important themes in the Tambo is the division of two systems of government in Minangkabau customs called Lareh Nan Duo, which is full of symbolic language. This study aims to dismantle the meaning of Tambo which is required by the symbolic and ideological language. Roland Barthes' semiological theory is used to uncover the symbolic meaning behind the story of Lareh Nan Duo. This research is a qualitative study with a qualitative descriptive method. The data obtained is through a literature study. The research object material is sourced from Tambo text by Datoek Batoeah Sango (1959). The units of data analysis in this research are words, sentences, phrases, paragraphs, and discourses that tell about Lareh Nan Duo. The results of the analysis illustrate that the Minangkabau society is a dualistic society, divided by two systems of government and their rules. The journey of the Minangkabau people on the dualism of the system and the rules gave a sign that the Minangkabau people held to two truths. The Minangkabau people reduce them to a map, namely Islam. The Minangkabau people make Islam as harmonization in a prolonged dualism. This research can add to the treasures and become a reference for researchers in the field of Barthes’s Semiology which is applied to Tambo. This research opens up space for other researchers to get involved in the historiography

Talking meaningfully and listening attentively to a child can be challenging for some. The practices, however, are pivotal to have children develop linguistically. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to study the impact of the implementation of conversation stations on a child language acquisition. This is a qualitative research which aims to explain a child’s linguistic phenomena. The linguistic aspects studied are designed in basic mental entities, covering naming objects, attributes and modifier, event, and attribute, modifier, and evaluation of the event. A four year and two-month old child as a participant engaged in the conversation stations and his utterances were noted for data selection and data analysis. This is helpful to recognize, identify, analyse, and draw a conclusion about how the child language acquisition is influenced by the implementation of the conversation stations. The current research demonstrates that the child is able to name the objects and later modify them properly, describe the events, and subsequently evaluate them, using more complex sentences instead of employing subject plus verb only and providing logical reasoning behind the arguments. It indicates that the conversation stations carry a meaningful practice to his oral language proficiency.
