Abstract

Negation in languages is a phenomenon, which receives researchers' attention for a long period. Negation occurs on different type of clauses by which it shows to have morphological and syntactic changes over the structure of words, phrases and sentences. Verbs of imminenceare used sometimes to denote negation in verbal clauses in Arabic. ka:d  is one of those verbs which carries the negation of the clause without using any negative particles. Saudi dialects use the verb baʁa to perform the same function. This paper discusses baʁa in verbal clauses illustrating its syntactic and semantic impact on the structure of the clauses. It requires the imperfective form of the verb to follow. Negating a clause, with the only negative particles ma: and/or la:, does not carry the negative sense because it is delivered through the use of baʁa. Thus, the negation of verbs of imminence does not require the presence of any negative particles. Otherwise, the positive meaning is delivered.

Abstract

Chinese parents fail to maintain use of their heritage languages for family communication because their children seem to wield their own power in deciding the home language. Little is known about how micro-language decisions at family level are influenced by macro-societal language use patterns and sociopolitical contexts. This study examined the influence of children’s family language policy on use of heritage languages by Chinese families in multiethnic Malaysia. Data on the language practices, language ideologies, and management strategies of two families were obtained using semi-structured interviews with the mother/father. The findings show that heritage languages prevailed when the children were young. The switch to dominant languages, particularly Mandarin and English, was triggered by the medium of instruction in school. Interestingly, it was the younger children in the family who actively exerted their agency to influence their family language practice in favour of the dominant languages as the means of family communication. The findings indicated that exposure to the heritage language through the media, having grandparents as carers, and parents’ frequent assertions on the value of the heritage language are not sustainable for heritage language maintenance.

Abstract

This research contributes to investigate a cultural continuity, particularly naming practice, in a homogenous Javanese community installing Petangan Jawa (Javanese Calculations). However, common Javanese slowly ignore it. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach with fieldwork to investigate the intention behind the name. Therefore, two varieties of Petangan Jawa, namely, a calculation based on calendar properties and a calculation based on Javanese script values, are still consistently used. In addition, this study paves the way for future research on the causes of the gradual abandonment of Petangan Jawa among common Javanese and how the perspective of religious beliefs about Petangan Jawa is used to predict the future.
