Abstract

Abstract Speaking is kind of communication that human needs to give same understanding of mind and works. The term of ‘speech’ has meaning to give some explanation from speaker to audience with many intention from the speaker based on their speech. The speech of Donald Trump at his first state on the january 2018 giving some explanation about the condition in USA today. This research giving the information about the use of conjunction: elaboration in Donald trump speech. The research goal to give some explanation about the types of conjunction and the meaning inside of it. This research used qualitative with the method have been used by the writers is textual analysis method as supported by Frey, et al. The analysis of data show us the precentage of subtype of conjunction: elaboration that Donald trump’s use at his speech are Expository 60%,  Exemplifying 8%, Corrective 8%, Particularizing 8%, Resumptive 8%, Verifactive 8%. Donald Trump used appositive so often rather than using clarification on his speech. It means he is less doing clarification to have understanding between him and the audience

Abstract

Speaking is an important role in mastering English. However, most of the students that learn English have difficulty with it. Most of the language teachers concern about the strategy in developing students’ language skill. That is why speaking has great attention among the teachers and students.. This is because speaking has important role in language learning process. In teaching speaking skill, communicative efficiency is the major goal to achieve. With the Students current skill, they should be able to make themselves understood and avoid error in understanding the message because of incorrect pronunciation, grammar or vocabulary. Therefore, teachers should have another alternative strategy to improve their students’ skill by using Drama. This research used the pre experimental method because the writer would like to find out the effectiveness of another technique in language teaching learning process. The objectives of this research entitled “Teaching Speaking using Drama” is to find out whether Drama is effective in improving students speaking skill. This research used quantitative method, the populations of this research were the third grade of SMKN 2 Karawang, while the samples were 36 students as XII Administration Office III as the participants.

Abstract

AbstractSpeaking is the highest target in English language because speaking is basis of communication which becomes a function learning. There are many kinds of technique to improve speaking skill and one of them is debate Technique. Therefore, the researcher wanted to find out whether or not debate technique can improve the students’ speaking skill and to analyze the classroom situation when debate technique is implemented in speaking class. This research used Collaborative Classroom Action Research and composed for two cycle then it practical and evaluated to categorize all facts including the success and the failure of the action. It means that the action should be stopped or continued and revised to the next cycle based on the selected criteria of success.The application of debate technique in teaching speaking at the first year of SMK Fajar Kencana was accompanied in two cycles including cycle one and cycle two. The members of this study were 29 students in class X AP. This is confirmed by students’ test score that upgraded in every cycle. In the cycle 1, the students’ got score of pre-test was 64,28. After the implementation of , the students’ speaking score were getting better.It can be seen from the result of students’avarage score cycle 1 was 67 and cycle 2 was 78.5. Debate is an appropriate technique used to improve students’ speaking skill for the students at SMK Fajar Kencana class X AP. It can be concluded that debate technique can improve students’ speaking interest and debate technique  can  improve speaking classroom into a better situation.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the student teams achievement divisions (STAD) technique of cooperative learning approach to improve writing narrative text. This study was a quantitative method and pre-experimental design in this research,the subject of the study was implemented in RPL 1 class tenth grade students of SMK Mahardhika Batujajar west Bandung in the 2018- 2019 academic years as sample. The data were obtained from several sources including the data analysis of pretestand posttest, then the dataanalysis of descriptive statistics and N-Gain. The results of this reserach that student teams achievement division(STAD) technique is effective in teaching writing narrative text data from classroom observation and students texts show the improvement in students writing skill in writing narrative text. The students write a good narrative text with clear generic structures and can understood the linguistic. It could be seen from the average of posttest results was 78.87 and the data avarege of pretest results in class research was 41.17 the difference score pretest and postest showed the STAD technique can improve students ability writing narrative text.Key Words: Cooperative Learning, STAD, Writing, Narrative text.

Abstract

This study has an aim to identify the kinds of speech act which are used in the utterances of Detective Inspector Gregory Lestrade, in Sherlock (BBC):A Study in Pink. In conducting this study, qualitative method is used to find the types of speech acts based on Searle’s theory in 1979, in the character’s utterances throughout the series. In presenting the data of the study, it is conducted by using descriptions. From the result of analysis, it is found that four out of five kinds of speech act are used by Lestrade, those are representatives, directives, commissives, and expressives. The findings also show that the representative speech act is the most dominant (53%) among the other three; meanwhile, expressive speech act is the least dominant (2.83%). Representative speech act, which functions for the speaker to state something they believe as the case or not reflects the role of Lestrade as a supporting character in the series that often gives Sherlock Holmes a lot of information about the cases and the clues for the case, also this is to fulfill his role as a Detective Inspector which could gather information from many sources and inform them to other people.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the speech acts of the movie script entitled Frozen, the movie that is being the most popular movie in 2013 until now. The research design in this paper is a qualitative method where the writers describe the result in a form of the words and the explanation of the result. The writers analyze all types of speech acts (representatives, commissives, directives, declarations, expressives, verdictives) by Finegan (2011) in doing this research, as the results of this research, all of the types of speech acts had their own meaning  for delivering the sentences to make such a response. The writers found 294 clauses that contain the type of speech acts, there are representatives (37), commissives (3), directives (32), expressives (10). Each type of the speech acts are delivering different meaning. The results of the research are taken from the script of the character named Anna in Frozen the movie.  Keywords:  Pragmatic, Language, Speech Act, Movie

Abstract

People with disability have their chance to get the education as well as the other people. While they continue their study on higher level of education, they learn several subjects, included English. One of the skills should be mastered in learning English is speaking. Their speaking skill may different with the ordinary people who can see how the lecturers produce the utterances and watch the movies, etc. Thus, the people with disability have their own learning stategy to achieve the speaking skills. They use those learning strategies because they hope to master the speaking skills as good as the ordinary ones no matter what. The research method is descriptive qualitative. There are two participants in the research. They use application of screen reader to drill the vocabulary and pronounciation. Screen reader is one of the applications that help people with disability to master speaking skill. It can be downloaded in playstore. They learn speaking skill autodidactly. They also brave to practice their speaking skill with lecturers and classmate of English Department. Keywords:  people with disability, learning strategy, speaking skill

Abstract

The aim of this research is to know the response of students toward the use of snakes and ladders games in teaching vocabulary. To learning vocabulary in English lesson can be fun or bored for students so the purpose of the use this game is that the students can improve their english vocabulary with games method which can make motivate the students to learning. Meanwhile, the observed population that was used for the research was the sixth grade students of SDN 2 Ngamparah Padalarang. The writer used the descriptive qualitative methods. Snakes and ladders games can provide learning motivation to students to always learn or repeat the material that has been studied before which will be tested through games, so that it feels fun for students.

Abstract

TThe purpose of this study is to identify the techniques that lecturers use in assessing a conversation. Then to discover how the English lecturer makes conversation judgments using pragmatic techniques. several video conversations were selected as data in this study. The data obtained from the results observed a video on gossip tv shows and then in transcript and reported descriptive. The results of this study showed in a tv show there are several violations of maxim according to pragmatic techniques. Abstract

This research entitled the effectiveness of extensive reading approach has a purpose to figure out the effectiveness of extensive reading approach to improve students’ reading comprehension. The subject of this research is students of SMK Al-Irsyad Cipanas. The sample of this research consists 20 of the eleventh grade students of AP class. The research uses quantitative research, or more specifically the one group pre-test post-test design as research design. To collect the data, this research applies pre-test and post-test as the instrument. The result of data is obtained by using t-test formula.  The result showed that students who learning using extensive reading approach had better reading ability to comprehend the text. The result of tobs is 2.08, the ttable with degrees of freedom (df) 19 and level of significance at 0.05 was 1,72. Based on the data analysis, the alternative hypothesis in this research was accepted because tobs is higher than ttable (2.08 > 1.72). Based on the data analysis, it is found that the test is reliable. The findings indicated that learning using extensive reading approach is significantly affected the students’ reading comprehension. Therefore, the extensive reading is suitable for improving students’ reading comprehension and it is also a strategy that can be used by teacher for making learning process to be more effective.
