Abstract

The aim of the research is to investigate students’ perception of snowball throwing technique in teaching grammar. The research used qualitative descriptive research method and the participants of the research were second grade of SMPN 2 Padalarang. The data were obtained from questionnaire and interview. Questionnaire was used to obtain information about students' perception towards the implementation of snowball throwing in teaching grammar and interview was also used to get more specific information that cannot be accessed through questionnaire. From the questionnaire, the students answered strongly agree is 66,67%, agree 19,44% and disagree 13,89% that this technique is good to be implemented in teaching grammar. Therefore, the result shows that the implementation of snowball throwing technique in teaching grammar can help students to learn English grammar. Based on questionnaire and interview, they enjoyed learning with this technique and they showed some improvement on their participation of learning activity, their their creativity and their cooperative skill when learning with this technique.Keywords: Grammar, Snowball Throwing Technique , Students’ Perception.

Abstract

This research deals with the types of illocutionary acts in Donald Trump’s Inaugural Speech. The research concerns with illocutionary act produced by Donald Trumps as a President of American. The aim of this research was to analyze the types of illocutionary speech act which was dominantly used in that speech. This research applied descriptive qualitative method and speech act theory by Yule. There were 63 utterances and the percentage of utterances were Representative 46%, Expressive 11%, Directive 16%, Commissive 12,7%, and Declarative 14,3%. The result showed that Donald Trump assert to the audience about the nation will be.It is found that Trump’s speech acts in his speech are intended as statement of fact and assertion. Disscussion of hopes implied in Trump’s speech acts. As seen on the table above, it can be seen that Trump hoped that his audiences would be persuaded to act

Abstract

This study is aimed to know the scale on the level of anxiety on Foreign Language in general and in reading on EFL learners especially to English department learner of 2015 in IKIP Siliwangi Bandung. The method that is used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The data were gathered using an online form by using a Likert scale questions of FLRAS (Foreign Language Reading Anxiety Scale) and FLCAS (Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scales). The data that have been collected were then analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 22 that consisted of descriptive statistics (e.g. means, standard deviations, percentages, etc.). The data used to measure the level of FL anxiety in general and in reading. From the results, more than 66% of the EFL learners have a medium-level in FLRAS, and 76% of the participant has a level of mildly anxious in FLCAS toward English as a foreign language.

Abstract

Teaching English is one of activity in the classroom. A game can use to improve students’ vocabularies mastery in the process of teaching learning, so students do not get bored while studying English. This research is attempted to verify the effectiveness of the Crossword Puzzle Game in teaching vocabulary at the seventh grade students of SMPN 10 Cimahi. The main objective is to figure out whether the crossword puzzle game is effective to improve the students’ vocabularies or not. The method is used quantitative research and pre-experimental research design conducted in one class. The populations of this research are the seventh grade students. And the sample is one class of the seventh grade students, which is class VII.E that consists of 32 students. The data is collected with the pretest and posttest as an instrument. The data analysis shows the result of mean score of posttest is higher than mean score of the pretest. The result of computation using Wilcoxon based on the table of test statistics, asymptotic significance (2-tailed) = 0.000 which is lower than 0.05. It means the alternative hypothesis is supported. Therefore, teaching English vocabulary using crossword puzzle game is effective to improve the students’ vocabulary. Keywords: Teaching, Vocabulary, Crossword Puzzle Game

Abstract

As a foreign language in Indonesia, English is still difficult subject for majority of the Indonesian students, even though it has been taught in junior high school, senior high school, English course, and another education institution. Therefore, many English learning-teaching activities in Indonesia use code-switching. Code-switching is language change (switch) in communication, from one language to another, code-switching here means Indonesian to English or English to Indonesian. This research examined the students’ perception towards code-switching use in English Foreign Language (EFL) classroom. This research applied survey research method, and the instruments were consisted of questionnaire and interview session. Thirty students were involved in filling questionnaire and nine students were involved in both questionnaire and interview. The result showed that (1) majority of students agree on code-switching use in learning teaching activity (2) they perceive code-switching helps them in improving their listening skills (3) they give more respect to teachers who use code-switching when they teach (4) they consider code-switching use increases their chance in passing examination and (5) they feel more comfort and more confident when they study English.

Abstract

Abstract This research is analyzing short story “The Tell-tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe based on speech act. Speech act consists of categories; representatives, directives, expressive, commissive, and declaratives. Researcher focused on representative speech act. This concerns fictional character of this story as a narrator who utters his belief toward situation he faced. A total of 128 utterances is analyzed and divided into categories of boasting, asserting, stating, informing, claiming, complaining, concluding, criticizing, reporting, describing, suggesting, swearing, and denying. Th result of this research has revealed that 39% representative speech act of reporting category is the most frequently used in the short story while the least including criticizing with 1%. This story is the perfect example of picturing representative speech act while not so many genres do so. By observing some points of utterances, reader will commence to understand the structure of speech act. Keywords:Speech Act, Short Story, The Tell Tale Heart.

Abstract

This research focus on adjacency pairs in “Talk Asia” Interview between President SBY with Stevens from CNN. This research had aimed to find out what types of AP and preference structure used in“Talk Asia” Interview between Indonesian President SBY with Stevens from CNN. Qualitative method was used to analyze this research. The researchers take the interview from CNN  between Indonesia president SBY with Stevens as the instrument for research. The result found that was four question-answer, two assessment-agreement/disagreement, one request-acceptance/refusal, one farewell-farewell, it means that the dominant type of AP in “Talk Asia” Interview between Indonesia President SBY with Stevens from CNN is question-answer. For preference structure there are two preferred and one dispreferred.

Abstract

Halliday holds that all cultures reflect some universal meta-functions in the languages and proposes three such meta-functions: ideational, interpersonal, and textual. This paper employs the transitivity theory in Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics to analyze on Sri Mulyani’sspeech at The Singapore Summit 2017. Through a quantitative analysis is applied to explore the distribution and functions of six transitivity process in Sri Mulyani’s speech. It is found that among the six processes, material processes (41.8%) highly dominate the speech. Relational processes (30.3%) ranks the second, followed by mental processes (17.2%), behavioral Processes (9.8%) and verbal processes (4.1%), while existential process (0.8%). the writers concludes that the dominate process found in Sri Mulyani’s speech at the singapura summit 2017 is material process with 41.8 %. Halliday holds that all cultures reflect some universal meta-functions in the languages and proposes three such meta-functions: ideational, interpersonal, and textual. Abstract

This research paper aims to find out of casual style used by teenagers of social media instagram. Instagram comment is always used by teenagers to interact with their friends using casual style. This research used qualitative descriptive method. The object of this research is the casual style used on instagram comment by teenagers. The data are casual style words on instagram comment by teenagers used when interact with their friends. The data source is the post on their account on instagram and the researchers taken 9 post from 3 accounts that used on instagram comment and containing casual style that they were used. In analyzing the data, the researchers classifies the data into types of casual styles based on eggins theory.Based on analysis the researchers found that from 3 account and 9 post from their post the researchers conclude that there are 51 casual style that used on instagram comment by teenagers and there are 32 declarative types of casual style , there are 3 exclamative types of casual style, there is 7 introgative types of casual style and the last there are 11 harsh words type of casual style. The total of casual style that used on instagram comment by teenagers are 51 and there are 4 types of casual styles in that instagram comment. Abstract

This study was aimed to improve student’s ability in writing short funcional text congratulation and complimenting using picture sequences at X MA Nurulhidayah Batujajar in the academic year of 2018/2019 as the subject of the study consists 32 students. This study was conducted for two months.The CAR was done based on Kurt Lewins’ design. The writer did two cycles which each cycle consists with planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. For data were gathered through qualitative and quantitative. The qualitative data were gained by analyzing the interview and observation result, while quantitative data were obtained from the students’ writing score of pretest and posttest.The finding of this study showed that there was improvement on the student’s ability in writing short funcional text congratulation and complimenting using picture sequences. It can be seen from the mean score of pretest was 56.75. Then, the mean score of posttest cycle 1 was 66.37 and the mean score of posttest cycle 2 was 72.62. so the criteria of success was achieved. from the result of questionnaire, it showed that there was improvement of positive responses in the teaching-learning process of writing short funcional textcongratulation and complimenting. Related to the result of observation and interview, it can be concluded that the students’ ability in writing short funcional texcongratulation and complimenting using picture sequences improved and the students’ were motivated in the teaching-learning process.
